I have played all three mass effect games and am currently on my second play through of the whole trilogy. It is an awesome game, that seemed to be just perfect, minus a few story and technical details. But then a thought came across my mind. In the games we have access to some pretty cool powers and weapons, but there was still something missing that's available in almost every RPG. I am of course talking about melee weapons.

Now I know the game does include some melee based attacks with your omni-tool or biotics, but I'm talking about actual melee weapons that you can collect and switch to. A lot of RPG's have melee weapons, and while I know this game was meant to be a shooter RPG, I still feel that melee weapons could have been fit in the game. We saw that Kai Leng has a sword and the Shadow Broker uses a holographic shield (an Omni-shield?). Why couldn't commander shepard or any of the squadmates?

I counted some pretty cool opportunities for melee weapons in the Mass Effect games:

1. Like the Shadow Broker, it would be pretty fun to use an Omni-Shield in the game. Probably as one of your armor pieces, the shield would be deployed to provide mobile cover from gunfire and probably bash some bad guys out of your way. The shield could also have a slightly more tactical advantage, as you can sort of play swat cop and hide behind the shield, periodically breaking out to shoot for a bit.

2. Swords could probably have been integrated into this game as well. With the combination of an Omni-shield, the player could rush in for a high-risk, high reward play style, slashing enemies away. The swords could have also provided a tactical use as some swords could be effective against shields, armor, or barriers while also providing damage perks like freezing, burning, or biotic damage.

3. Perhaps biotics and tech experts could also get a kick without relying on swords, rushing in with powerful punches. Biotics could send enemies flying away, while tech experts could penetrate protective coverings or other damage perks like flaming punches or freeze punches.

What do you think? Should Bioware consider adding melee weapons to Mass Effect 4?

NO no no no no It's a sci-fi universe why the bleepidy bloop would you add swords sure maybe a customizable omni blade not full on pick your sword mace or axe, but i'd be fine with if you change you omni blade shape color effects... but not whole new melee ie swords weapons.

Yeah, I know it's a sci-fi universe, but considering that this Mass Effect universe had forms of swords and shields, albiet futuristic, I thought it would have been appropriate if the main player could use them. I probably should have clarified that it would mainly be shields and general swords (in the style of Kai Leng), each with various upgrades for certain functions, like holding off against heavy explosives or being able to slice through barriers.

I think homing bullets would be a more pragmatic way of dealing with omni shields than swords.

We have personal shields

We have guns

We have a health bar

We have Omniblade

We have armor already

We dont need shields mace axes and other thigns like such i can understand somekits with melee weapons but not as a full blow customizable weapon where i have to go and find the axe of king rah and pick it up and use it in battle it just doesnt make sense in the mass effect series...

I'm fine with the "melee" weapons we have already: the omni-blade or the old-fashioned fist. The omni-blade is not meant to be a primary weapon, it's either for stealth or when you find yourself in a (too) close quarters situation and need to take down your foe fast.

Anything more is just unneccessary. We don't want this to turn into Star Wars with lightsabers/omni-swords. If you want them that much play Dragon Age or Skyrim.

You guys are forgetting that there have been a certain number of NPC with melee weapons, including a Katana.

Let's not forget a few Stealth characters kills without firing a single shot during the story, like Thane's neck breaking.

Many Sc-fi universes uses melee weapons without getting ridiculous.

In Mass Effect would make even more sense considering you have a Bionic Charge which allows you to be propelled against your opponent. If you had a massive pointy stick you would run them through quite easily.

Thane also used the element of surprise though, which is something not really afforded to somebody like Shepard - at least not very often. I've said before i'd like the infiltrator to have true stealth capabilities and that includes a Far Cry 4-esque chain takedown which could probably be done using a tool like a knife or equivalent. I think if you added straight-up melee weapons though it would have to come at a cost of defense, hence why they're only used by character like Kai Leng who are assassins and not combat types - otherwise everybody would just stand back and throw singularities at you and shoot you with a shotgun.
