I'm a huge science-fiction fan, so it was a natural fit that the Mass Effect series became my favorite game series of all time. With Mass Effect 4 having been announced, I was taking a trip down memory lane, reading about EDI because she's awesome. One thing led to another and I came across this 2 part article on the future of AI. It quickly became one of the most fascinating article I had ever read in my entire life. I just thought I'd share them with anyone else who is interested in having their perception of the world altered.

Beware: People who are afraid of the future and/or change should stay away.

AI romance confirmed?

Anyway, the articles are interesting theory-crafting but from a machine learning POV there's not a lot to be said for them. The real issue is that the human brain combines a lot of "technological" innovations. It's not just about creating one machine that can outperform us in an incredible battery of tasks. It's miniaturization, energy efficiency, heat dissipation, etc.

There's more to thinking like we do than just computation.

There's no evidence that we're anywhere near producing a true AI. People keep coming up with theories, better and faster processors, nope, neural nets, nope, better and faster neural nets, betcha that's a nope too.

Truth is no one understands what causes human-like intelligence, all they're doing is taking shots in the dark and no has yet produced a result. We understand fusion and that's been coming in 10 or so years for 50 years now. There is zero understanding of how cognizant intelligence occurs, until someone pins it down they're just farting in a hurricane.
