This line of discussion, has and always will boggle my mind. Sure, maybe they do have something to prove to the film making higher ups, but for me its always been pretty damn simple:
No, I don't want to see women's stories.
I don't want to see men's stories either.
I just want good ones.
I'm actually doing a paper on gender representation right now. Due to stuff like this being almost the full extent of theory available in the subject... its been tiring to say the least. 
It will be a good riddance to stop that outdated overrated post-apocalyptic Aussie movie to have a better sequel!

A story dealing with the all too likely fate for women in the event of an apocalypse and them defying the SOB responsible and defeating him sounds like a good movie to me.
