It's annoying that there can't be a cool female character without people foaming at the mouth about feminism.

NO one is saying there shouldnt be any Cool female characters we knew Theron was going to be a badass bald chick about 4 years ago give or take. hell i recall her character being teasesd when Gibson was involved in the 90s.

This is more about the Eve Ensler thing. i my self think she has a Girl chubby for victim mentality but thats just me.

and to be honest Only one Website blew a gasket about the Feminist thing. 1 guy on 1 site and it was a PUA site at that and he said some nasty things about MRAs too.

if we were to look into this movie Philosophicaly the 1st thing we would note is.

WERE THE HELL ARE THEY GETTING ALL THE MECHANICS?

Fallowed by.

ARNT THEY COLD?

then

WHO CUTS ALL THERE HAIR?

then maybe we would point out its a 2 hour long stunt sequence fallowed with pointing out that there was more thaught put into this thread than the script of the movie.

In short no one is Triggered by "why didnt they let her use her real accent?" Therons Furiosa more by the

"Womens be victums.. now i is off to rub one ooot." i garontee no one left the teater pondering a message or questioning anything other than "Can i afford Flamethrower lessons?"

I don't have a problem with female protagonists. What bothers me is when they try to forcefully glorify them, or when they come by the cost of stomping on already existing characters to promote them. And that's kind of what happens here. They use the fame of Mad Max name to promote Furioasa's character while Max is shoved to a side role. That feels disingenuous.

I'm not sure "Mad Max" has all that much of a character. Certainly Thunderdome isn't exactly a character-centric biopic looking deeply at the human condition. Albeit I do get the sense this was meant to be Mad Max: Furiosa or something like that. I mean, even the title ("Road Fury") is pretty evocative. I should point out that in at least one language, the name "Furiosa" is literally a way of saying something to the effect of "the angry woman".

Arguably, Fury Road is about Furiosa from Max's point of view.  Though I'd argue that he still does most of the heavy lifting as the protagonist.

Yeah I would say so. And it's like Su Lu said a page or two ago, Max is more or less just a cog in the wheel of the story. And he sort of always has been.

He's just trying to make it out alive on to the next day. He isn't a glitz and glam, cheesy one liner, "I'll be back" kind of action hero. He's more of a reluctant character than anything else if you think about it. His life seems to be wrong place, wrong time lol.

Finally saw it today and what a movie. What a lovely movie.

Yes, it's about the women. Sure there are other plot point; such as reforestation; but they come about because they are characteristics of the female characters.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The movie deals with the fact that, in the event of societal collapse, women are vulnerable and then it has the women take the power back.

Which is fine. If this is feminism, it's about as valid as feminism gets. And the movie doesn't devolve into a moral lesson of how evil men are. In fact, I was surprised by Nux's character. Really, I was all ready to dismiss any male character who was not Max as Stormtroopers and there is this kid whose role is funarrow-10x10.png, touching and he actually gets a girlfriend.

You'd think that would be a mortal sin a tumblr feminist when these women are escaping from sexual slavery but it's actually in the movie.

Really, as far as the feminist controversy goes, I was only irked by three scenes.

1-Max can't shoot so Furiosa takes the gun and shoot perfectly at first.

It's a really minor scene and that is why it bothered me. Women can shoot better than men, there is nothing wrong with a woman shooting better than a man. But why did Furiosa have to shoot better than Max? For no other reason than that the woman shoots better?

2-The pregnant run away who says her son will be a mini warlord and thus ugly but then the old woman says it could be a girl.

Ok, this is a sensitive subject because maybe victims of rape who end up pregnant do prefer if it's a girl, I don't know. But the implication here seems to be the baby being a girl would be better. Why?

3-Nux's death. And this is the most glaring fault of the movie, IMO.

Nux dies so they can escape. An heroic death, for sure. But taking into accountarrow-10x10.png that he began the movie as a death seeker, you would think the progression of his character would be to someone who wants to live. Instead, they revert backt to the "witness me" of the beginning of the movie.

I suppose the point here is that he is dying for a good cause instead but it felt like the movie did an almost 180 with him.

Other than that, it's not Max's story but it doesn't have to be. He pulls his weight, works alongside Furiosa as an equal and even has development. Predictable development, sure, but it's there.

Another thing I loved was how the Citadel actually had a culture. They could have just made it your average bandit encapment but they actually built a culture around it with gestures and beliefs and even expressions.

Fury Road is a damn good action flick. I do wish they would have spent a little bit more time on the narrative; for instance, let us see more of Nux's and Max's progression and Furiosa's despair; but I sincerely look foward to future instalments of the franchise.

Agreed with your points. While the narrative has been narrow in all movies, the key focus has always been its thematic portrayal of survival, moral decline and showcasing the ecological collapse of the world. The movie utilized the essence of a true Mad Max film nicely, while adding some great action sequences and solid acting on the actors part. I couldn't be more happier about it as a Mad Max fan.

As for your musings:

2) I believe it is simply to be taken that the pregnant women, having grown up under the tyranny of men has formed a repulsive view of them which has led to a certain prejudice that if her child is a boy it will end up like the rest of the men, but if it is a girl there is hope. I don't think one is supposed to take that statement too seriously though, it is just how she (and that woman) sees it and the world.

3) Yeah I agree with this part, though I guess it goes with the notion that he wasn't that adamant to throw away his personal belief that he has been holding for who knows how long. But yes, having him finding a new hope through life, instead of seeking death would have been welcome.

heres a question for yah. ( i had this tossed at me a few times in different places.)

Would anyone say Furiosa is the best well written female character of all time?

because i still say this is a silly movie where the car is the star and the guy whith the guitar stole the movie.

if it wasnt for that article no one would care and if it wasnt for that Rok's BS there wouldnt be any controversy.

That's utter nonsense. Best written? Miss Elizabeth Bennett, now and forever. Impy is an excellent action heroine. She's up there with Ripley, but she isn't the overall best.

Lisbeth Salander and Ellen Ripley are good female characters. But Princess Leia is probabaly my favorite female character. She's smart and a good leader. And those hair buns....

So I watched the movie. And I absolutely feel that I now live in a weird parallel world where everyone else say a different cut of the movie. Because this was exactly what I excepected when I first saw the trailer: a shallow action movie with a lot of phenomenal practical effects that amounts to a chase scene.
