just one thing about the veilfire objective

I'm just curious because I have yet to see the veilfire objective since the DLC and patch dropped, which seems... weird. Yet, everything else is there and working - the new characters, new map, and dragons. But it's been the same ol' Assassinate Something/Recover Stuff/Don't Let Inquisition Dude Die objectives.

Veil fire only triggers in the original destinations. I felt it would be a bit cruel to allow it in the castle, especially since zones 2 & 4 on that map are so exposed to ranged attacks.

However, it can be easily enabled... maybe during a random weekend event?

Why is the spawn point for the torch random?

Each zone contains specifically tagged locations for certain "things" to spawn. The torch location is scripted to use the same random locations that are used for elements such as the escort NPC or the golden nug.

In adding the new event we essentially tap into the existing spawn locations in the levels. Adding new locations would require patching every single level instance that the event could occur in.

I used to just hold the torch while my teammates fought, but it looked so funny to see me standing still and them doing all the work, like they're my servants.

So now I just drop the torch and attack too, and then just pick it up again (or let someone else carry it if they want).

I tend to do this as well.

From the very first prototype of the event I made sure that it was still possible to solo the event by "holding your ground" around the torch when attacking. I also didn't want to force the torch holder to be unable to defend themselves if the need were to arise.

Is it possible to make it spawn as a specific one of the existing waypoints in a predictable and non random fasion, as clearly some are able to only spawn in certain parts of the level (collect can spawn near the end, but the escort can't)

They do use the exact same spawn locations. In a few rare situations they are located further from the entrance than others, and unfortunately that cannot be changed at this time without patching all the zones. We may look into this in a future patch.

With the NPCs I believe that it might seem that they spawn closer in these zones because after a certain delay the NPC comes to the player party location (generally pulling the enemies with them).

One time it did seem like we had to run through a few rooms, but we also didn't seem to suffer any ill effects from the fog.

I'm not sure what it does, exactly. It's not like the acid electromagnetic rain in ME3MP. (seriously, it only hurt shields)

To be honest, when it pops, i run up and grab, then head straight to the bonfire and light it. It really doesn't take that long.

I find I'm not at all troubled by the torch sometimes being a little further away.

It's simply part of the challenge, it's fine.

Ah, this explains a lot as I've mostly been on the Ferelden map since the DLC dropped.

I finally encountered the veilfire challenge last night on an Orlesian Chateau Perilous run. The group I was with seemed to have the strategy down-pat. Archer grabbed the torch and indicated the ever popular "Here, friends!" and the two Virtuosos and I ran (hastened, yay!) with him through the whole zone to light the bonfire, then killed all the enemies and went back for the treasure room. :)

I definitely think a random event like that on the Ferelden map would produce the sort of tears you thoroughly enjoy, Graham.

Use your Avvar, activate Lady's Wrath and hold the torch for your teammates.  You'll be killing stuff without doing a thing.  He's the most efficient torch carrier, IMO :P

The original characters don't have specific lines for picking up the torch so I just trigger the "come here" lines automatically when they grab the torch for the first time

I love ZITHER!'s...I guess it's an 'idle around the bonfire' line. It's something like 'Let's light this thing, shall we? It's not like it could make it worse.'

Please don't... Pretty, pretty please? That castle is as full of holes as the plot of The Phantom Menace, the lowered visibility would be baaaaad.

I try to provide insight where I can on the systems that I am specifically responsible for creating or implementing.

I ran ahead with the torch and no one else got the memo.... we wiped. I'm sorry PUG team from last night. Level 8 Avvar couldn't clutch the zone.

Can you implement the torch in wave 5 somehow for a weekend event? Have it all poison with a couple torches you need to fight near?

Woah, your mind is an altogether scarier place than mine. That is some quality trolling gameplay. Badger greatly approves (+20)

Wow, sucker for punishment I see.  Perhaps this is more up your alley.  These desires can be handled outside of the game and the rest of us can hold onto whatever sanity is left.

Well, there's that or pushing the Inquisition Messenger into a dragon bonfire... (although that's not really necessary since he'll do it by himself sooner or later)

I'll stick with in game punishment

I actually try to run ahead and fight outside of the torch when I can to see how well I hold up. Some classes are much better suited for it than others
