Good GOD were these characters written in the last 15 minutes before ME3 was printed to discs? I can't help but cringe and mute my audio whenever I hear them talk.

Besides maybe their introductory dialogue, which doesn't set up much. they are the definition of insipid throughout the entire campaign. I think random scientist who needs to be saved #53917 was more interesting that these 2.

James is actually rather insightful, easygoing, and amiable enough that most people actually were surprised at how he turned out. He's generally regarded as a decent addition to the series.

I like James, but I would rather have an ME2 squadmate in his place.

James is great. I'd prefer Emily Wong in place of Allers. Also, a ME2 squadmate in place of EDIbot

James is supposed to be "the new guy" who's not totally familiar with Shepard's previous adventures, and thus a reason for expository dialogue.  I actually liked him.  He's the "talented but inexperienced soldier" Shepard gets to mentor.

Allers...I got nothing.  I'd say "fan service" but that implies she has fans.

Yes I would agree about  having Emily Wong instead of whatever and having an ME2 squadmate instead of the hologram turned platform.

James:

Because Shepard needed a pseudo-son to follow in his footsteps and the Alliance would never let Grunt into the N7 program.

Allers:

To give Shepard a casual sex option?

Chobot does have fans, but they didn't go about this the right way. Had she actually delivered her quirkier on-screen attitude (she needed better voice direction) and been dressed like this, she'd be far better received, though folks like myself would still gripe about Wong.

James serves both as the guy who allows exposition for new players and, thematically, acts as 'the next Shepard,' that he's in a position for Shepard to mentor a reflection of themselves from their past, the person they were after Akuze/the Blitz/Torfan.

Allers is a decent idea in theory, as an imbedded war reporter and a reminder of the people who Shepard's fighting for, but that fling option just ruins her as a character, because it's WILDLY unprofessional, and, because they weren't giving Jessica Chobot, who is not a professional VA, a major role, her characterization ended up being a pale shadow of what she could have been.

James shouldn't be lumped in with Diana Allers.

He wasn't a shallow character voiced by an IGN employee that served no other purpose beyond a misguided attempt at fanservice.

I don't know about Allers; I pretty much just ignore her for most of the game except when she gives me assets (the type that fights against the Reapers, that is.)

I like James though. I enjoyed the sparring scene with him and I feel like the flirtation was tastefully done, not like FemShep in ME2... hnng. The Citadel DLC helped me warm up to him. He's a lovable meathead.

That's how I view it. She's kind of the intrepid reporter and hot scoop trying to understand the real Shepard and give a civilian/non-combatant/survivor's view of the war (rather than the view of the hero).

I don't necessarily disagree with the notion of having her as a love interest, provided it be done well, not as a casual hook-up that may or may not be Allers way of getting an 'exclusive'.

And as Dreamgazer put, she would have looked a lot better with something else on.

Still don't understand what you people see in James, besides his introductory scene which is nice everything else is:

"Oh hey you killed those guys? That's loco hombre."

"Oh hey you killed those guys? Hell yeah."

"Oh hey you reconcilled 2 races which have been warring for centuries? Incredible man."

In a Call of Duty game he'd probably get an Oscar for mixing English and Spanish and thus becoming a varied and multicultural character, but in ME3 I think him and Allers are the poorest characters ever written. Even Ashley has some interesting tidbits besides her endless "My daddy this my daddy that" and whatever Othellian undertones all that daddy talk implies, although as far as ME3 goes her daddy daddy talk got cranked up to 11.

We got it Ashley, your daddy was in the military and you're a human supremacist roughneck through and through. You made that point abundantaly clear in the first game.

James is probably one of my least favourite squadmates, but putting him in the same category as Allers is really unfair! Poor guy deserves better than that.  :P

I actually really liked James Vega and Diana Allers.

James Vega was just a genuinely good guy, a rare thing in the companions Shepard has had. He is my favorite human squadmate in the trilogy by far and up there in the squadmates overall.

Diana Allers had promise, especially if they hadn't cut the content with her they did. If they kept everything, she probably would have been one of my favorite characters in the entire series, but even trimmed down as much as she was I am a fan of the character.

To me that was always Ash... but I guess I need another just in case she's dead.

He's OK, but as far as soldiers go, he's no Grunt (whose powers are similar), not even really Ash (more well rounded with detonations), and definitely no Zaeed (even more well rounded than Ash). And I don't care for the Jersey Shore meathead thing either... he turns out better than that, but the imagery they're shooting for still sucks.

They exist to steal time and effort from whoever you liked in previous games. Obviously.

Nah but James is cool. Allers is a failed experiment. Waddaya gonna do?

I'd trade everyone on my squad except for Javik for Miranda and Kasumi. And I'd much rather have Emily Wong in Allers' place. But life just isn't that good.

James was made with the ME3 newbie in mind. He is actually not that bad as a character even if he looks like a retard under steroids. In fact he had a nice voice acting and is more mature than you'd expect when you see him for the first time ... BUT he took the place of this one:

me3_citadel_dlc___it_s_raining_krogan_by

And this is simply unforgivable...
