Yeah, geth turrets, on a mission he mentions himself :) Both hack the Collector door with same success :P

I still give both Incisors :P

What the hell for? It's stronger against shields, but not anything else. And apparently it's inaccurate on squad members, but not sure how true that is.

I'd take vega over jack.

And before you lynch me, I just think jack is completely out of place in me2. I wish they'd written her as a truly tragic figure, preferably non recruitable but used to highlight the more unpleasant areas of cerberus.

Squadmates do a ton of damage with it and are actually much more accurate than, say, with Viper or Mantis (at least in my experience). Try it out ;)

That's rehashing everything they did in the novels. And what they do with David as well.

I wouldn't lynch you for one character though (even one I like). It's this talk of all characters..or even half. I'm not if it's sure it's a troll.. or people getting off on being contrarian for the sake of it. But it's ****** stupid.

It's just personal preference, really. I tried replying to that "Ranking of all Mass Effect crew" thread and James was actually in my top 5. Never posted because I couldn't figure out the ranking past the top 5... but only one character from ME2 was up there with him, and that was Miranda. It's not that I outright disliked the ME2 crew, I just (surprisingly, even to myself) preferred James during missions and enjoyed his content. His content felt realistic and humbling, which is how I try to portray my Shepard as well, so he fit. I'm also a fan of human dynamics in ME. I like Ashley and Kaidan for the same reason.

I like human dynamics too. It just happens to be Zaeed, Jack, Kasumi, and Miranda (and Joker, of course). I thought Ash was cool as hell in ME1, but she seems more introverted and doesn't talk **** anymore. She's more like Kaidan now. I just said this in another thread.. but it's worth repeating.

Well, good for you then. You slogged through a game with many characters you didn't like. It's a wonder you even kept your interest in the series.

But the payoff was Vega. It was all worth it. He's just THAT awesome. ;)

Depending on how you want to portray your Shepard, some crew members are more complimenting than others. If someone wanted a straightforward, reasonable, no-nonsense crew, they might prefer James over a lot of the... emotionally questionable types in ME2. Like Jack/Grunt/Zaeed/Morinth. If they want to portray a practical crew who wears proper armor in battle, that already eliminates nearly all of the ME2 crew lol.

Just throwing that out there to show why someone might prefer James over a majority of the ME2 crew.

Morinth is a space vampire.. she's nothing like the others. Zaeed is fairly well adjusted according to Kelly (probably not accurate). And even Joker compares Zaeed to Shepard. Jack is only slightly more crazy than a default Shepard (who starts with a Renegade bonus, grew up in gangs, and was a Cerberus labrat). Grunt is just a Krogan.. he thought he was crazy for a moment, but it's just puberty. And to top it off, Vega himself thinks Shepard is crazy. That's probably his best contribution to the series... for just recognizing that.

My reasons for liking Vega over most of the ME2 crew are simple really and are similar to why I like Jacob, he's sane, normal and relatable, I could see myself having drinks with them. Many of the other squadmates however, are way too out there for my liking and I would never be caught dead hanging out with any of them IRL, because I like being alive and I intend to stay that way for as long as possible thank you very much.

That's why I said it depends on how you want to portray your Shepard, not default Shepard.  :P Even if you choose the default state, it doesn't make your Shepard Renegade by default (which is what I assume you mean when you say "crazy", because Renegade in ME2 definitely has more impulsive interrupts and is more comparable to Jack/Zaeed/etc.)

James acknowledging that Shepard does crazy things is great, and why I feel like he contributes to the humbleness/humanity I try to portray with my Shepard. Even then, doing crazy things to get the job done is different than doing crazy things because they're simply unable to control their impulses. Which is what I feel is in question with the aforementioned crew. It's not a slight against the characters, because I did enjoy a lot of their content, but it's why they're lower on my list and why I didn't pair them with my Shepard as often, and also why someone else might not prefer their character.

Fair enough... I'm wary of the "lack of crazy" myself. My Shep's nightmare is being like Kaidan (actually, he was cool for flipping out and killing Vyrnnus.. I keep telling him that, but he doesn't listen).

Am I getting massively trolled by the resident posters of this forum?

James better than Jacob? What the ****? Jacob had a ton of dialogue throughout ME2, backstory and character, James barely has any dialogue past Mars/Palaven and his introduction arc. It's all inconsequential one-2 liners with Shepard and high school crack jokes with the gay guy.

James in top 5? I'm talking character development, not squad abilities.

Tali is a better (or at least equal) hacker.

You must be joking.

My ideal crew (by which I mean the best people to have on the Normandy, not necessarily restrained or defined by squadmate designations). Clearly this isn't gameplay focused.

Miranda- XO, war planning

Kasumi- Infiltration expert

Tali- Engineering

Mordin- R&D, Medical

Garrus- Weapon Master

EDI- Cyberwarfare

Legion- Geth terminal (direct line to geth allies)

Joker- Pilot

Chakwas- Medical

Adams, Ken/Gabby- Engineering

Ashley- Ground team

Vega- Ground team

Javik- Ground team, war planning

Traynor- Communications Specialist

Cortez- Shuttle Pilot

Typically only those marked ground team would be what now counts as squadmates. Squad lead would be Javik or sometimes Garrus (Shepard learned Delegate!) On cases where Shepard is away Miranda has command. Most of the other roles are self explanatory. Legion's inclusion is because the geth are left as your biggest allies at the end of ME2 if you do his LM (before ME3 fucked it up). EDI may use her body in some situations or to accompany Joker but is otherwise in standby. Kasumi typically runs solo missions. There would also be a direct QEC line to Liara as the SB.

Who does Jacob crack jokes with?  When does he comment on a mission that's not his own?

Of course, that's a problem with all the ME2 squad.

Now it's an ME2 problem? Every Bioware game didn't have that feature until ME3.  edit: Wait, you can count Ash/Kaidan in 1.. I guess it's a way to get input from Alliance crew. No one else though.

James is actually rather insightful, easygoing, and amiable enough that most people actually were surprised at how he turned out. He's generally regarded as a decent addition to the series.

Agreed. I thought James was going to be a pretty shallow character at first, which in hindsight, was an unfair prejudgment. I saw this huge muscled brute and figured he was gonna be the typical "oorah" one-liner spouting juice-head. At certain times that was true, but his character also had subtleties that were interesting such as his naivety, and his willingness to stand up to Shepard. He was funny, honorable, and ferociously loyal. So I guess you can say he grew on me.

Edit: Diana on the other hand...

James is easily one of my favorite companions in the series, and I feel that he complements other members of the crew pretty nicely. If Kaidan is alive, you'll see him playing cards, if Garrus is alive, you'll have James standing around comparing stories, and if you got Javik, he's being trolled by the prothean in the galley. And of course, I greatly enjoy his interaction with Cortez. He's the only shipmate that seems to frequently engage most of the squad. Of course, considering that he's also supposed to help deal with the potential void left by killing off almost every companion up until now, it makes sense that there's more effort put into his character than one might assume based on his outward appearance.

I'd easily take him over Jacob, Thane and even Samara, neither of which I used beyond loyalty missions or a mission where their presence was mandatory.

Allers is serviceable as the reporter to fill a cargo bay with in and of herself, but the fact that we could have gotten a character we knew since the very beginning, but instead had her go out like a chump off screen is what makes Allers evil.
