Why woudn't she be safe around kids? She's never indicated anything malicious that way. She wanted to kill Aresh because he was going to hurt more kids.

Because nice people don't get sent to Purgatory.

Obviously I'm not claiming she goes psycho on them because we clearly see she doesn't. But realistically, no Alliance official would ever sign off on her working at their most valuable program.

Whether or not she'll really be safe around kids isn't so much the issue as to how detrimental her record would be on the likelihood of being allowed to. With her record, she may not even be authorized to fly the school space bus to Grissom, let alone be an instructor. Heck in modern times having a record can stop you from certain positions of basic employment.

That must be why the Warden wanted to lock Shepard in Purgatory too.... :D

Besides, she's only in Purgatory for killing Cerberus. Big loss to the galaxy there.

James is there for the new player who know nothing about Mass Effect. Since ME3 is the place the start the trilogy. I'm pretty sure Bioware even said this themselves at one point. As a character I don't actually have anything against him. I just hate that he's there at all given that I didn't feel the trilogy was the appropriate time to be introducing an entirely new squadmate - especially at the expense of 12+ others we had on the roster that weren't brought back as squadies.

*snip*

That happens when you have that much of squaddies in ME2 who all can die. BW took the short cut, threw them out of the ship and introduced a complete new crew, ditching what made the second installment so popular.

As much as I had fun with the dirty dozen, as much as I think that BW would have done a better job by tossing the half of them in ME2 and actually cared about advancing the Reaper plot. We wouldn't have the bratalyst and the Crucible BS in ME3.

No ****, I have a record myself.

You people are no fun. I'll just try to be nice and say you're being square and overthinking it. Since when was Mass Effect a simulator

I think I might go to the Mortal Kombat forums for awhile...

To be clear, I actually don't have any real issue with Jack teaching at Grissom, and very much prefer her to be there than no one at all, and think that both she and Grunt easily had the best cameos of the bunch. I'm just noting stupid reality and junk :P

I'd like to add though, that it would have been nice if there was some variation in her personality or even story path based on how you treated her or dealt with her loyalty mission. It would have certainly added some weight to the whole thing. Knowing that she turns out exactly the same way no matter what is fine and good, but if we're able to steer a character's development at its turning point, it'd be nice to see the "alternate universe".

I can see that. But I also think people who just treat her badly should just kill her. The Renegade option just sees her as a tool. "You're a killer". They just want her to embrace exactly what Cerberus built her for. This same person should go on using everyone else too, while they're at it.

When she's not that simple in that moment. She's got her gun on Aresh because she's showing some real concern for a change. Not because she wants to kill for the sake of it... but to put an end to these kind of experiments.

Not being a simulator does not mean we can just up and do whatever the **** we want.

I'm required to suspend my disbelief about element zero and its associated shenanigans, the plethora of rubber forehead aliens and whatever else this setting established as its ground rules. Anything beyond that that doesn't make sense for no good reason I will call out.

And I've given you some reasons why it can make sense (within this setting). If you want to push for more realism, I suggest just killing her. That way you can block it out of your mind. I'm not under any delusion that she can be universally liked...she's almost meant to provoke and make people judge how stable is.

I loved James. Took him everywhere with me. He turned out better than I expected. It was pretty cool.

Allers, I didn't mind. I always talked to her. They didn't give her much to say, though.

Which ones?

Jacob, Thane, Samara, Kasumi, Morinth, all easily.

The "sixth" depends on the Shepard. Some don't trust Legion, and some would opt for James over Zaeed.

I like Zaeed well enough, and he's good for a laugh and some good old fashioned violent fun, but James is the character I feel like my Shepard can connect with better as a teammate, so I'd have to pick him.

I thought Jack found out about Ascension Project through Shepard. She really did sound concerned about another Pragia and kids being tortured and I think she was at least curious at that time. She didn't get into Purgatory because she did anything really bad, she broke into Cerberus facility and saved a lot of people before she get caught by bounty hunters. She narrowly being made into another Cerberus test subject again if the mercs hadn't taken her in. She's more a victim of circumstance and if you're kind to her (mostly be neutral to her when it matters, don't try to fix her etc), she'll be more willing to change for the better.

I like to think that after her loyalty quest, Jack went on researching about Ascension Project and during Shepard's incarceration, infiltrated the station to see how the Alliance been treating the kids. She would have been caught by the security and Kahlee did a background check with Anderson and then her association with Shepard would have helped clearing Jack. And the academy already been receiving threats and infiltration from Cerberus themselves and who else would protect the kids better than the woman who hate Cerberus with every cell in her body.

Mass Effect is a bad choose your own adventure game. They did good about giving you an illusion of dialogue choices and alternate situations but a lot of stuff was pretty definite.

Yeah how it played out acted as if she had followed the paragon path. Ideally they would have provided variation given the nature of the loyalty mission decision.

The one thing that doesn't change no matter what path you take is that she's pissed off about Pragia and wants to kill Aresh for what he might to do to other kids. Renegade, in that moment, eggs her on and just treats her as a killer, but either way, she's still trying to protect new biotic kids. Her original purpose was just blowing things up, but once she discovers the truth, she's in prevention mode too.

So I'm not sure how much variation there should be. There wasn't much to begin with. That quest says more about Shepard than Jack. Jack's got the same concerns, no matter what.

I always liked James. He might not be one of my favorites, but he's more than just the lumbering musclehead people see him as.

The guy's got issues with Shepard. On one hand, Shep's a hero and an icon, and being able to serve with them is perhaps the only way Vega can help save Earth. On the other hand, Shep's actions made James' sacrifice of his entire team effectively worthless, so there's some misplaced anger (and survivor's guilt) there. Add in how Shepard becomes a mentor to James, and you've got a pretty decent story of a man working through old wounds in order to trust again.

That, and he's fairly attractive.

Don't make the fanboy mistake of assuming any criticism leveled against the character means dislike of or "hating on" said character. Kasumi is my favorite character and I think you know full well how critical I am of her in ME3.

And this case is not even criticism of Jack. It's criticism of the writing around Jack. I get her character arc, I really do. I even appreciate it, even though I don't rank her in my favorites. But in neither game does her setting make any goddamn sense. In that sense she's consistent I guess.

Fair enough.

But I didn't know you were critical of Kasumi?

And why would you be? She's fine. I mean, she's a thief. But my advice to anyone is don't buy the DLC if you don't like thieves  :D I only wish she had her bigger role in ME3... Because more than likely, it would have had some fun intrigue (which was kind of lacking until the Citadel DLC).

I like James, but I would rather have an ME2 squadmate in his place.

This. But Allers was ****** terrible. In every conceivable way. I love booting her off the ship and then listening in the Spectre offices about how the next ship she boarded got blown up. Why didn't Emily Wong or Kalisah get that spot? And then they want to turn around and claim IGN was unbiased. Get outta here.

Oh boy, I really don't feel like getting into it here.

Check the Ranking thread I think? I carry on for a few pages there. That and the Kasumi thread in Party Members. And it's her ME3 appearance I'm critical of, not ME2. I love her in ME2. Best DLC by far. So much potential, even though she's only click to talk. Then ME3 comes along and she comes across like she resents you and then there's the ongoing Keiji nonsense.... I'll stop before I pop a vein.

Feelings on Cerberus aside, this is not the case.

Jack herself lists an entire spree of crimes and damages that she's done in her time. Any one of which could have gotten her locked up.

It doesn't. She outright stated that she loves to murder.

Which is conveniently done away with in ME3. Lots of damage to characters in that game.
