It's easy to dismiss James on account of his appearance but playing through the game he definitely grew on me and turned out to be a much likable and interesting than your typical musclebound bro.  Granted he wasn't the most complex or innovative character, but then again none of the squadmates throughout the trilogy really were, they all slotted into fairly standard archetypes.

As for Allers, it always seemed to me like somebody up high insisted on putting her in the game to pander to IGN and the developers responded by making her as unappealing and irritating as possible.  Whatever you think of Chobot she's isn't that ugly, and the way that Allers' face turned out in game had to be intentional.  Her actual role was just to be a nuisance, and not in a funny way like Khalisah al-Jilani, and while the acting wasn't great it's to be expected from an amateur.

For the most part, I think a lot of people were just bitter because the game reduced most of the ME2 cast to cameos, and it's easy to point fingers at new characters for stealing the spotlight.  Personally, I thought that the new squadmates were great and generally put up better performances than the returning ME1 cast.  And Allers, while annoying, wasn't nearly important enough to be worth getting worked up over.

I think people would like James more if they saw his movie. (Paragon Lost)

Also yeah no Chobot was a waste.  They already HAD Emily Wong to fill this role.

James...I hated him at first impression, but I warmed up to him. I get sick of the random spanish though.  Wasn't the lore that by now Earth races are so integrated as to be indistinguishable?  Why did they feel the need to have an "ethnic" earthling?

I've seen it. It's good for the backstory - and just to have an ME movie to watch - but he's worse than Failshep.

And what's with the "Not Liara" girlfriend? They couldn't think of something else?

If there's one thing I'm certain of, it's that Spanish will be part of New York (where James is from) until the entire east coast is underwater.

That just sounds like griping that the character isn't a WASP. Honestly the series could have used fewer of those.

While it was stated that most people by the time of ME1 are of mixed ancestry rather than from a single ethnic group, it was never stated that cultural differences vanished. There are still national borders and the people of Earth speak multiple languages. If anything Vega was actually in keeping with the lore in that he's got both Hispanic (Vega) and either English or Scottish (his father's surname is Sanders) ancestry.

I do wish that they simply made a face for her character creator style like they did for everyone else. As for the uncanny vally-ness of her face, I'm not so sure that they intended it to be that way, especially after seeing the characters in the DLC's. Both Brysons in Leviathan looks really odd, and so does Brooks to some extent.

Some faces just might not work as well for the tech used. At least that's my take.

I thought it was San Diego. He was running around in SD in the comics --- and even wears a Chargers hat (and Walters called it a Chargers hat in the commentary).

On a sidenote, that makes the Reaper invasion all the more sad. The fact that football and other common activities still exist.. it's still very much like our Earth. And it's gets wrecked...or completely obliterated.

James serves both as the guy who allows exposition for new players and, thematically, acts as 'the next Shepard,' that he's in a position for Shepard to mentor a reflection of themselves from their past, the person they were after Akuze/the Blitz/Torfan.

NO! I FORBID IT! PLAYERS WHO JUMP INTO THE THIRD INSTALLMENT OF A TRILOGY DESERVE NOTHING!!!!

More that I hate stereotypical crap like saying random spanish words in the middle of english sentences.  Its like YEAH I GOT IT HE HAS SPANISH/MEXICAN HERITAGE.  But He's speaking in ENGLISH.  Its like how writers feel the need to have Gambit, Batroc, Colossus and Nightcrawler use random french, russian, and german, in the middle of english sentences, when it makes no sense.

It comes across more like their english sucks and they don't actually know the words there.  Despite their english being otherwise perfect.

I work in a warehouse full of mexicans who speak either mexican or english.  Not both at the same time like that, that's stupid.

Its different when saying something that keeps the Spanish name even in English, but you know what I'm getting at.

I can see your main point, but this I'll disagree with. Or more like, I have a different experience. I live in South Texas... a lot of the culture is "Tex Mex"and sometimes there is a blend of different languages (Spanglish). Not that anyone can't speak another way though. More like they prefer it.

Yeah, the nickname thing seems to be common too. I grew up with the "Flaco". Instead of Loco.

Fair enough, just, it still seems really out of place in the world of Mass Effect.  James is the ONLY person like that, so he sticks out like a sore thumb.

Good GOD were these characters written in the last 15 minutes before ME3 was printed to discs? I can't help but cringe and mute my audio whenever I hear them talk.

Besides maybe their introductory dialogue, which doesn't set up much. they are the definition of insipid throughout the entire campaign. I think random scientist who needs to be saved #53917 was more interesting that these 2.

HEY! Watch out what you say about James.

It's not everyday you can find a soldier who doesn't follows the "bad mouthing, sex-obsessed, depressed/crazy" stereotype. You must be hella strong to continue being a kind and caring person after being at a war situation.

Plus, he's easy to make friends with without him being a jerk. I say there's plenty of things to like about him.

Captain Matsuo of Noveria dropped the occassional Japanese word into her dialogue.

Aren't they? Well, unless you like symptoms of potentially psychotic personalities :D

I might have the symptoms myself.

The other voices disagree though.

My family is a large group of Puerto Ricans that speak fluent English, yet when talking, they throw in Spanish words all the time, especially when they're swearing. It's very common.

I have no problem with James except that his introduction was non-existent and he's really an unknown NPC.  Why was he outside Shepards door? Why does he follow Shepard and Anderson around? How did he know Alenko? Who invited him onto the Normandy? Why the vagueness about his father? What's up with his Uncle? Vega is an incomplete character, which is a shame. Missed opportunity? Maybe.

Nothing is really explained in game with enough detail to satisfy. I think you shouldn't have to read about any character that's somewhat major (a squadmate) in a codex, or comic to learn who he/she is.

But all this is pointless to lament now. What's done is done. It will never be addressed.

edit: er... Allers. I usually have her on-board. Do the interviews. Berate her when appropriate and otherwise ignore her.

Dropping polite suffixes in a dialogue doesn't really make one Japanese. Kasumi didn't need to do that either but she is Japanese (despite Kym Hoy being half-Vietnamese). Its more subtle with her, mostly through the way she says Japanese names and her reminiscing about her grandmother's ramen.

When you're used to speaking to mostly bilingual/trilingual folks, it was natural to mix languages if you're fluent in all of them....  and then you'll find it harder to speak in plain single language. You know, Kaidan was born in Singapore. If the writers choose to make him more Singaporean than Canadian, you'll be complaining a lot more whenever he speaks in Singlish........... actually, its starting to make sense.

Just replayed the intro and I wish the renegade interrupt would have been Shep throwing James off the ship or at least I could have followed through on the threat to dump that waste of space on the citadel.

Well, James suffers from the same problem a few others do. I'd say that the worst offender would have to be Kai Leng, because he's actually important to the plot, but was introduced in reading material rather than in the series itself. This is why I am not a fan of the comics and books on principle.

Eh, same difference, really. You'll sooner rid San Diego of organic produce before Spanish.
