How many promotions should you have with a character at MINIMUM to expect to be successful with a group on perilous?

Just the base amount if you have good equipment.  If you have a good group that knows what they are doing promotions are not at all a prerequisite.

If you take
Keeper
Elementalist with fire wall barrier
Virtuoso
You can use whatever gear and have no promotions.

Hmmm. Seem like big ifs.

I tried Perilous solo and made it past zone 1 with less than 20/20/20. Significantly less as my Con is 11 and the other two are about 15 or 16. With a team that aren't brand new to the game you should be fine, I'd imagine...

Yeah, I've managed to kill dragons and stay alive at the end in a PuG group with 18/22/22 (iirc) as Virtuoso, Legionnaire, AW and Archer. So long as you and the group don't have to struggle through the first zones I think there's a high chance you can take a dragon.

I've played plenty of perilous games and unless you have what I like to call a inquisition super hero ( someone with 30 or more promotions in a class) you usually have to have a bunch of arcane warriors to even reach round 5. Maybe I'm not that experienced at it but ( inquisition rank # 436) but it seems to have a lot to do with promotes

Not really, you can pug it no question about it as long as people are not total dunder heads.

Zero. Play keeper (guaranteed unlocked) or virtuoso (if it was your free unlock), barrier group, use catapults.

If you want to play DPS, you need gear & more kits unlocked.

 It really doesn't

1. You do need (or really, really helps I should say), a barrier class to keep barriers up on people. And decent gear.

2. People who stick together and don't bum rush everything, Use line of sight to let enemies funnel to you, so you don't get flanked by archers.

3. Know the Dragon fight mechanics (There aren't many) A. If he does his whirlwind move that pulls everyone in, run into it or you die. B. Don't get hit by his paw, it really, really hurts. C. It's more important to stay together than rushing to a catapult during her air phase, nothing wrong with catapults, just move as a group.

4. Communicate, and if the group is not communicating and working together, don't even attempt the dragon, save your dragons call. Communication doesn't always mean talking, just a simple understanding of what needs to be done and flowing as a group is all you need.

5. If someone dies in an avoidable situation, use your mic and politely tell them how to avoid dieing in that situation again. If they listen you have a good shot at success.

I tried fighting the Dragon in a Perilous PuG last night (for the first time) and was actually successful! Dare I say it was quite easy. Not one health potion used. That was with horrible lag too! I only have 11 willpower by the way. Brought my level 20 Keeper (Barrier, Chain Lightning, Static Cage, Fade Step). Was using her best armor and Staff of the Void.

There was a Bard, Duelist (who couldn't see the enemies) and an Archer. We all hugged the Bard for near constant barriers. When they started get low, or just so the Bard could focus on other things, I would Barrier the group. There was great teamwork. On zone 4 at the stairs we stood at the bottom and let me come to us, using that narrow entrance to bottleneck them.

So you can absolutely be successful with hardly any promotions. Take a strong character, something with Barrier is more forgiving. Find a group that has good communication and seem to know what they are doing. If there is a capable Bard in the group it will be that much easier, just stick by that person.

The bard is what causes the lag unfortunately :( Just did a perilous dragon fight, took FOREVER because of the framerate. Got a Bow of the Dragon(!) though, so it's all good.

Like its been touched on, working together and having good gear is more important than promotions. The problem with PUGs is usually the "working together" part.

What exactly are the catapults for?  Do they just add a little damage, or do they provoke a change in behaviour (e.g. getting the dragon down off of the towers faster)?

Near as I can tell (I haven't timed it) Its about the same whether you hit her or not. She just flies around until she's ready to come down. But it does do some extra damage to her.

Good to know! I hope Bioware fixes the problem soon. Having a good Bard on the team can make things go so much more smoothly.

That lag though... very unpleasant. So much bunny hopping.

What's the issue with the virtuoso? I know many people complain he causes laggy games, but yesterday for example I played a few perilous games (with 2 vituosos, reaver, and duelist) and I had no lag/framerate issues (I wasn't the host).

And as for the perilous dragon, I think in a way he's somewhat easier than 12513545 archers sniping you on the map while the RTC tries to eat your face. I am not too much above you with promos (9 con, 8 cunning, 20 willpower) and I am doing fine so you should try it, it's fun. On the other hand, I do have most of the best equipment in game so that helps a lot. And finding a good group helps a lot too. Perilous is hard to solo if you're not used to it and if you don't have lots of promotions and bad groups effectively means soloing.

It's most noticeable on Ferelden castle. AFAIK it comes from spamming notes too much, it overloads the game. It doesn't come from the effects (not as the main cause anyway) or the enemies, because you can see that after the wave is over, it will get progressively less laggy over the course of about 10 secs until it's back to normal.
