I've read it's terrible, it breaks certain character like Varrick to uselessness, but I've been using it for 10 hours and it all seems fine.

I manually level my character and auto level everyone else, who's strategy I do not understand and do not want to screw up. That's how I played Mass Effect and it's how I plan to play this, I'm just irked there isn't an option for the game to level my companions without me having auto level for them. Any problem with what I'm doing?

You should use the feature, then check which skill the character will learn.
Varric gets long range skills but also gets a skill that makes him get close to people, which isn't good for squishy characters with long range skills.  ^^

That skill could be useful if you were the one playing as him, get close to people, launch traps and leave, but the AI will probably have problems.

If you don't want to keep reading all the skills maybe just read a Class Description and spend every point on it.  ^^
You know the role the character will fill.

Also Varric can be useless if you don't upgrade Bianca, you have to buy/find stuff and upgrade her because he'll only use her.

The autolevel feature was made for players like you -- you just want "default" companions, and that's what it gives you. No sarcasm intended, it's perfectly legit.

As long as you are not playing above Normal in difficulty, it should be fine. And even if you decide it isn't, it only costs 345 gold to respec.

Summarizing it for OP:

I have always found auto-level a joke in every DA game.If you do it out of RP....then pick what you think they would use.

I presume we are speaking of the feature in which party members pick their perks themselves? I should try it sometime.

This comment is useless. Fancy wordwork, though. Somewhat.

I find that if I play on casual or normal, it does not matter. If I play on hard or nightmare, especially pre-Skyhold when the game is challenging, it behooves me to pick talents and passives that are the most useful for the team.  The game will not necessarily pick the most useful things.  For example, the game will auto-spec Dorian into the fire tree if you let it have its way with him (which is fine - Dorian goes fire, Viv, ice and Solas Lightning), but it is going to put points on flashfire, which is a skill I don't find to be the most useful (in fact when I build my fire mages I never take this skill and if I'm a mage I respec him or her and swap in immolate which is much more useful).  Or the chaotic focus passive, which I don't feel is useful in terms of the barrier trade off - but again, if it ain't broke, no need to fix it.  It is fun to tweak things, however.
