Seriously, this game is great guys. No more clunky inventory system, the conversations are great, and i like how you can do a lot more renegade things in sidequests instead of just rejecting them and missing out on points. The AI is a lot better, your squad actually does work, the system on how the new powers and ammo work against armor/shields/barriers is great, you feel like squadmates powers are actually getting something done and they take out a lot more enemies.
The leveling system is efficient and the squadmates differing abilities actually have you switching the members out for different missions. Not to mention the amazing improvement on shepards combat, the cover system is way better and getting headshots is just so much more fun in this game. Flame me all you want for those of you who feel bioware has "lost touch with true RPG fans" or whatever, but you guys dont realize this game was never a full on RPG in the first place. they took out all the dull aspects of the previous game and replaced them with much smoother flowing ones.
My only real gripe is that your decisions from ME1 arent really felt as much as the developers made them out to be early on, but hopefully we'll see a better improvement of this in ME3. 9.5/10, and im gonna say game of the year already, i dont see the tired out old halo system beating this game. Thanks a ton bioware, i got home and played like 12 hours today, so fun.
edit: sorry about the wall of text lol
No one is saying it isn't a great story or a great game, what people are argueing about is what they felt should ahve been included in a game that is supposed to be an RPG. Lets take the lack of an inventory system. Everyone will agree that the old system was clunky. What people differ on is if the ne system is better or not. Many of use felt the system could ahve been improved by stacking same items, grouping like items, and just making it easier to browse, we don't feel it needed to be removed.
I personally don't like that ammo is now an ability instead of a simple mod for your weapon, how did my adept forget how to use ammo between ME and ME2? I disagree that who you bring along really matters now because there no longer is a req to make sure you haev someone who can ahck or decrypt and most squadmates are hybrids and so bring overlapping abilities. The leveling system isn't efficient, it's dumbed down, I mean each squad mate has what, 3 active and 1 passive ability now an oh wow, evolving those powers at the end of the line really make a difference.... I have only seen a few people who actually didn't like that they made the combat more shooterish, most of us are actually ok with that. A lot of us don't consider an inventory system or figuring out what's an upgrade and who gets what item to be dull, we veiw that as an immersive part of the experience because you are investing time in your squadmates instead of just having a computer do eveything for you.
We aren't saying it isn't a great story or great game, I mean come on, it's made by BioWare, most jsut feel that there was either a bait and switch pulled or that too much was gutted to make it feel more like a shooter than a RPG. Personally I think they gutted things that could have been improved upon.

the first game was never rpg-heavy...and my squadmates always go into cover automatically on their own
Sixty levels, huge inventory (though, it had limited choices), squadmember customization, armor classes, big skill tree with bonus talents isn't RPG heavy? Maybe I'm misinformed...
Also, Squadmates do take cover, but it's rather poor. And shields don't last long when the Insanity collectors get to pewpewing.

I also miss the weapon skills, dislike the hard limitation with weapon choice (a shotgun with sledge hammer rounds was fun no matter what skill you had) and at this point I am still doubtful about fuel management and the planet scanning.
All of that is out weighed by the superior AI, level design, and environmental design. Its simply the best I have seen.

There are a lot of things that are awesome. Personally, I'm enjoying the updated combat system and I think that the majority of the graphics are improved. Also, the Normandy feels more like a complete vessel now. Despite a few moments here and there, I think the character interactions are as good as anything in ME1. Unfortunately, most of what I am really enjoying about the game would likely count as spoilers. Sufficed to say, my list of pros is actually longer than my list of cons, despite how this post may look.
But there are some things that detract from the experience. I think the mission report screens break the flow of the game and being abruptly shifted out of a location to one of these seems clunky. To me, the universe feels a bit smaller. I miss actually walking out the Normandy onto a dock. Places like the Citadel that felt massive and impressive in ME1 feel somehow diminished. Yes, the world feels more populated but there is less of it. Also, I know I'm going to catch flak for this, but I miss the elevators. It's not like losing them decreased the load times. They're still there, plus we've lost the random character interactions and a loading method that helped keep the player immersed in the world.
I love the game, as I said, I don't hate it. But I am critical of a few things that hurt the overall game experience to me. I think we should be. Unearned praise can be just as damaging as unearned disdain. Having said that, I think that Mass Effect 2 is another quality product from the fine folks at BioWare, not perfect, but a heck of a good game.

I can offer constructive criticism though. The scrapping of the old inventory system is a plus, but on the flip side they may have taken it a little too far. I did enjoy have an itemized screen where I could select specific weapons/armor/upgrades etc... It just need to be more organized, and made easier to "scrap" un-needed assets.
Scrapping the MAKO missions was a huge plus! But why not replace it with something that has a little more substance? ( I know there is something planned for the future, but we've herd that rant before)
I thought the leveling and abilities distribution screen from ME1 was far superior. I realize that with out having to micro-manage your team anymore the depth is no longer necessary. But I personally enjoyed outfitting and molding my team to my personal tastes...but that's just me!
This seemed almost like an entirely new game. Had this been branded "Blade Runner: 3455" and not a follow-up to one of the most beloved RPG's in the past decade, no one would be complaining. But as with everything in life, we play the hand we are dealt. And while this wasn't "exactly" what I was expecting, it is still an amazing gaming experience. Filled with rich characters, a compelling story, and great gameplay!

The inventory system in ME1 was a mess. You're walking around with 150 different items, guns, implants, etc... I just don't understand why simplifying this would be "gutting the RPG" aspect of the game. If anything the inventory system in ME1 pulled me out of the role playing and into looking at 7 different versions of shotguns that I might never use. This new system, if anything seems more plausible and realistic. Right?
Because to most os uf part of an RPG is sifting through various items, deciding which is the best option, deciding who gets the upgrade, and then selling the rest in hopes of buying the next upgrade. Most of us will agree that the previous system was cluncky, however many of us feel it could have been fixed by stacking same items and grouping like items so all your cryo rounds where in one place and instead of seeing 12 listing for Cryo Round VII you just saw one listing with a little 12 in a corner. The new system leaves less room for customization and has a computer just auto equiping the best upgrade instead of letting you decide what's an upgrade.

This game is great, no doubt about that. And for every person who is complaining about it, there are twenty more sitting in front of their monitors/tv's enjoying it too much to bother posting. The whiners always have a louder voice, for those of us who are content, why do we need to say anything??

all of the hate I've seen on these forums seems to be a lot of nit picks.
different things are more or less important depending on who you talk to. A lot of us enjoy having an inventory system and having complete contol over what our squadmates wear and use, other find it combersome. IMO BioWare should have kept the old inventory system but changed it so same items stack and like items are grouped together and then added an auto equip button just like their is an auto level button so those that didn't want to spend time goign through their inventory didn't haev to and those of us that wanted to still could have.

I'd like to know what these nightmare stories are because most of us that are posting about the issues we have are acknowledging that this is still a great game and great story, it's just that we feel things got gutted that could have simply been improved and left in.

Ammo system, not overheating. SuZe, not Ashley Williams. Singing salarian scientist not Wrex. New combat mechanism, shorter cooldowns, only one usable skill at once.
Things different, people... can't take it.
Game not 100% perfect. But people blind to improvements. Can't learn to let things go. Come here, open topic.
Blind, unreasonable, stupid.
Have to wait to things chill out.
Game great, much better than ME1.
In ways of roleplaying. Roleplaying not about point-spending, but choices and repricussions.
