Explanation simple: Mass Effect 2 not Mass Effect 1. Different, many ways.
Ammo system, not overheating. SuZe, not Ashley Williams. Singing salarian scientist not Wrex. New combat mechanism, shorter cooldowns, only one usable skill at once.
Things different, people... can't take it.

Game not 100% perfect. But people blind to improvements. Can't learn to let things go. Come here, open topic.
Blind, unreasonable, stupid.

Have to wait to things chill out.
Game great, much better than ME1.
In ways of roleplaying. Roleplaying not about point-spending, but choices and repricussions.

Wow, that is one of the most insulting generalizations I've ever read. It seems to me that the majority of people who have issues with the game are admitting that it is great, just flawed. I fail to see how that is blind, unreasonable, or stupid. Slinging insults doesn't exactly help your position, either.

Figured "Meh" I'll see whats on the web about it since the release.

Page after page of nightmare story after nightmare story. After my own tribulations just to get the game I was already gun shy and was getting ready to dive for cover when i read this post

Seriously, this game is great guys. No more clunky inventory system, the conversations are great, and i like how you can do a lot more renegade things in sidequests instead of just rejecting them and missing out on points. The AI is a lot better, your squad actually does work, the system on how the new powers and ammo work against armor/shields/barriers is great, you feel like squadmates powers are actually getting something done and they take out a lot more enemies.

The leveling system is efficient and the squadmates differing abilities actually have you switching the members out for different missions. Not to mention the amazing improvement on shepards combat, the cover system is way better and getting headshots is just so much more fun in this game. Flame me all you want for those of you who feel bioware has "lost touch with true RPG fans" or whatever, but you guys dont realize this game was never a full on RPG in the first place. they took out all the dull aspects of the previous game and replaced them with much smoother flowing ones.

My only real gripe is that your decisions from ME1 arent really felt as much as the developers made them out to be early on, but hopefully we'll see a better improvement of this in ME3. 9.5/10, and im gonna say game of the year already, i dont see the tired out old halo system beating this game. Thanks a ton bioware, i got home and played like 12 hours today, so fun.

edit: sorry about the wall of text lol

No one is saying it isn't a great story or a great game, what people are argueing about is what they felt should ahve been included in a game that is supposed to be an RPG.  Lets take the lack of an inventory system.  Everyone will agree that the old system was clunky.  What people differ on is if the ne system is better or not.  Many of use felt the system could ahve been improved by stacking same items, grouping like items, and just making it easier to browse, we don't feel it needed to be removed.

I personally don't like that ammo is now an ability instead of a simple mod for your weapon, how did my adept forget how to use ammo between ME and ME2?  I disagree that who you bring along really matters now because there no longer is a req to make sure you haev someone who can ahck or decrypt and most squadmates are hybrids and so bring overlapping abilities.  The leveling system isn't efficient, it's dumbed down, I mean each squad mate has what, 3 active and 1 passive ability now an oh wow, evolving those powers at the end of the line really make a difference....  I have only seen a few people who actually didn't like that they made the combat more shooterish, most of us are actually ok with that.  A lot of us don't consider an inventory system or figuring out what's an upgrade and who gets what item to be dull, we veiw that as an immersive part of the experience because you are investing time in your squadmates instead of just having a computer do eveything for you.

We aren't saying it isn't a great story or great game, I mean come on, it's made by BioWare, most jsut feel that there was either a bait and switch pulled or that too much was gutted to make it feel more like a shooter than a RPG.  Personally I think they gutted things that could have been improved upon.

ya man i agree with you, its no longer a rpg,  its a 3rd persion shooter/adventer

Thats been years ago. They used to publish the binary code for games in a Monthly magazine. If you were willing to spend the time coding it all in binary, you had a pretty cool game.

The problem was the 2 days of typing 1's and 0'd while going blind at the RGB blue and greyscale screen :P

explain how it was an RPG in the first place? this is a step in the right direction for the ME series, its the way ME1 shouldve been. if youre looking for a "true" rpg go play DA:O or something else, mass effect one was never a true RPG, it was intended more towards the shooter fans, and theyve made it even better in that aspect, i think this is what they were going for in the first game, and the second game definately accomplished it.

This game is great, no doubt about that. And for every person who is complaining about it, there are twenty more sitting in front of their monitors/tv's enjoying it too much to bother posting. The whiners always have a louder voice, for those of us who are content, why do we need to say anything??

I can offer constructive criticism though. The scrapping of the old inventory system is a plus, but on the flip side they may have taken it a little too far. I did enjoy have an itemized screen where I could select specific weapons/armor/upgrades etc... It just need to be more organized, and made easier to "scrap" un-needed assets.

Scrapping the MAKO missions was a huge plus! But why not replace it with something that has a little more substance? ( I know there is something planned for the future, but we've herd that rant before)

I thought the leveling and abilities distribution screen from ME1 was far superior. I realize that with out having to micro-manage your team anymore the depth is no longer necessary. But I personally enjoyed outfitting and molding my team to my personal tastes...but that's just me!

This seemed almost like an entirely new game. Had this been branded "Blade Runner: 3455" and not a follow-up to one of the most beloved RPG's in the past decade, no one would be complaining. But as with everything in life, we play the hand we are dealt. And while this wasn't "exactly" what I was expecting, it is still an amazing gaming experience. Filled with rich characters, a compelling story, and great gameplay!

I think what you listed there is essentially what the majority of us that have problems with the game are "complaining" about.

it was nice putting specific upgrades on weapons and armor, but i think the new system works fine with the n7 armor, just wish you apply the upgrades you can buy on the DLC armor

that was pretty much why i posted this, i saw so many negative things on the first page of the forum, disappointing european fans. trust me, i knew what to expect from this game after watching EVERY official video and most of the unofficial ones, ive seen the ending and everything and my expectations are still blown, its just a FUN game. not really a tedious aspect to it once youve upgraded your scanner and get that stuff done fast, especially when you start finding more and more rich planets. thanks for all the positive feedback guys, and thanks to bioware for a great game.

non-American fans, keep your heads up, dont listen to all the smack talk, i think this might be game of the year, the only real competition is halo:reach, and i think this game is just much more of an improvement on the previous game than the halo series can possibly do at this point

OMG yes. Like any mining, its more a test of patience than something skill testing. Yay element zero <3

It's just the way it is. I can't remember one game no matter how good it was that has not been flamed the first weeks after release. Even Baldurs Gate a game that today is the holy grail of the hardcore RPG fans has been flamed in the forums at release. People have very high expectations and as soon as one little thing does not meet them they come to the forums to voice their disappointment. For most it just takes some time to judge the game more for its strengths rather than its weaknesses or at least be fair and constructive when criticizing.

Most people aren't fit to be critics, but everyone can post his impression or be a critic. Some people overreacted like crazy when they learned that barrier could pop up out of nowhere in ME 2 to grant you cover. It's worse when a game is highly praised, since a portion of the fanbase will actually expect perfection(according to their own standard and criteria of course).

There's a point where feedback is useless, since every developer know you can't please everyone (in fact, you can't please everyone at work,in your family or based on your life choice vs someone else, etc).

I can already say: there will be haters when Mass effect 3 is released,no matter how it end up.

I have a seemingly endless wait ahead of me as Amazon has yet to get my copy to me. Sadly, what I've been reading on these forums makes me think that I don't want the game anymore. I hear arguments like how loot and character customization do not a RPG make and I just get nervous. My question is what makes an RPG then? With lack of these two items I see nothing left that differentiates between this and any other game.

Some will say that the story or the breadth of choices makes the RPG. But guys, I remember when that breadth of choice was new and exciting because RPGs used to force you down a linear path and all you had was your character customization and loot. So, please tell me what this game is cause I was looking forward to a sequel to an amazing (if flawed) RPG.

Is this a good RPG still?

Answer: Yes it is, if by RPG you mean shooter-RPG, which ME1 was anyway. People are overreacting here, while everywhere outside these forums we're enjoying this game a *lot*.

I usually try not to whine in public, but I'll tell you why I may hate this game (the verdict hasn't come in yet). The ammo. It sucks. You only have five shots with a shotgun before you have to reload. That wouldn't be so bad, but even at point black range with a bunch of upgrades (I've installed every one available before Horizon) you still can't kill an enemy with one shot. As a Vanguard, the best range weapon is the pistol, but it has so little ammo, it is almost worthless. You can't charge the enemy because you're dead in the open. Biotics have been gimped. They are useless until you drop an enemy's shields and armor. I didn't realize armor cancelled the effects of gravity. I have mixed feelings on the Inventory system. It's nice not to have a bunch of junk in the inventory, but I dislike only aquiring new weapons when the story gives them to me. The RPG elements have virtually been eliminated. There are only a few skills and no inventory freedom. Mass Effect 2 isn't a roleplaying game. It is a shooter...not a very good one at that. I could go on, but I don't like ****ing in public.

I have loved most of BioWare's games. Even the ones I haven't loved, like Jade Empire, I still liked. As I mentioned before, my feelings toward Mass Effect 2 are bordering on hate. I love the storyline, but the gameplay is making it so I'm not sure if it is worth it. Case in point, with the original Mass Effect, I couldn't put it down until I had beat it three times. Even then, I kept going back to it. With Mass Effect 2, I'm only half way through (or however far Horizon is), and I'm here whining. Well, enough ****ing. Time to get raped for the thousandth time by those two Scions and the Husks on Horizon.

u were lucky to get three shots with the shotgun in ME1...and you have to use certain powers to take stuff down, use wise squad choices if u dont have all ammo types, like warp for barriers, incinerate for armor, overload for shields. mass effect 1 wasnt a full out RPG, and ME2 got rid of the stuff that was tedious and made it into the exciting game it shouldve been, and i think its a pretty good 3PS on par with GoW on the unreal engine.

i played ME 3 times, first time as partially renegade when it first came out doing a couple side quests, then started a paragon run early in 09 but didnt feel like finishing till about two months ago with almost no side quests, and then to do a full renegade run i just blazed thru the main story in 9 hours skipping all the dialog because it was so boring and repetitive.

ME2 is gonna get my second playthrough right after i finish the first because i think the changes will be far different, especially with the interrupt and charm/intimidate. plus its not slow and boring, its action packed and exciting. the recruitment missions are cool, i dont really like the collector missions, theyre fun but the atmosphere, the collectors and the husks just creep me out. but the loyalty missions are some of the funnest quests ive done in a game in a long time, theyre just all so varried and tense. the loyalty missions alone blow therum, feros, noveria, virmire, ilos, and the last citadel mission out of the water.
