I am in my first play through of DAO and i am playing a mage

.I have reached lvl 7 and i have taken my first specialisation Arcane Warrior. I understand that when i reach lvl 14 i get another specialisation. Could i then take blood mage or Spiritual Healer and if i do take then do i need to unlock them ?

I am finding the fighting a bit confusing. I click on an opponent then click the spell but often nothing happens no spell is cast. So what am i doing wrong.

Finally is there a guide section on the forum and if there is where is it.

Thanks

In reverse order:

There is no official guide. That being said, the unofficial wiki is quite good.

It's been a while since I played the game, so I am unsure why your spells are not working. Are you playing on a PC or on a console?

You will need to have the specialization unlocked before you can select it.

Maybe the spells you are trying to do have a 'passive' effect or are buffs for your party instead of attack/damage spells?

Are you right-clicking the spell or left-clicking? You should be left-clicking.

Spirit Healer over Blood Mage for me. Group Heal and Revive are just too useful.

You will need to unlock specializations. Arcane Warrior, I guess you've already done. Spirit Healer is unlocked by buying a tome off of either the Wonders of Thedas shop in Denerim or Levi Dryden or his brother, I forget which, after completing the Warden's Keep DLC. Blood Mage, if you go with that, is unlocked by making a deal with a demon during the "The Arl of Redcliffe" quest. (If you don't want the consequences from dealing with the demon, you can make the deal and then reload an earlier save, and the specialization will still be unlocked.)

There is a pretty thorough resource in the Classes and Builds forum, a pinned thread called Guide Compilation of Dragon Age Origins. It has more than a few guides in there for you to throw a stick at, and even a few about mages and mage specializations.  There's also a fourth mage specialization I've found that is pretty useful called shapeshifter if you want to take a look at it down the road. You can learn that one from Morrigan or buy a tome i believe. In short though, a lot of useful guides can be found in the Classes and Builds forum.

Spirit Healer is unlocked by buying the tome in the Wonders of Thedas.  AFAIK no game in the Dragon Age series has any specialization linked to DLC.

The Awakening specializations are linked to that expansion. Unless of course you have the mod that allows the Awakening specializations to be used in Origins.

Fortunately the Origins specializations you can get unlocked in Awakenings works for Origins too.  It's how i was able to finally unlock Reaver since I could never bring myself to defile the ashes.

Yea, that's how I got Blood Mage spec.  But I could never bring myself to ally with Kolgrim, even temporarily.  Defiling the ashes is something I've never seen in the game.  I can't even bring myself to Utube it.  As a kid I always wanted to be an archeologist.  Such things as ancient burial places are sacred to me.  Even fictional ones it would seem  :)

^^I can't bring myself to defile the graves in DAI either. But, to get the specialization for DAO, I did do it once.

I did all the things required to unlock the specs, but then came to the conclusion that both specializations were dark enough that my hero characters wouldn't use them. I've never had the ability to RP evil characters, though I did have to go a bit out of character to unlock the specs.

@sylvanaerie-you don't have a ethical dilemma with using the specs, but you do with how you get them. Just curious because when I got them, they didn't quite seem worth the moral sacrifice I made to get them.

Actually, I didn't find the specs themselves all that appealing either.  I preferred SH to BM and Templar or Champion to Reaver.  I unlocked it, but never really used them.  I don't have it in me to RP dark characters either.  I've tried, but quickly lost any interest/connection to them.

I couldn't even defile the ashes once.  I unlocked reaver via the manual in Awakening.  Going to have to unlock Blood Mage the same way.  (My canon Warden refused even to let me unlock it via the manual, he hates blood magic THAT much.)

yeah I could never defile anyone's grave or ashes in real life and I doubt I would do it. Although if I do a renegade style playthrough I may attempt it once

If you want the spec and are not ready to defile the ashes (never did it myself either) you also can use this mod: http://www.nexusmods...&preview=&pUp=1

I literally eviscerated (hope it's the right word) a body from head to toe over a period of several months during my field of studies (medicine), so you could say I disturbed a dead man in real life. Wasn't too nice in the beginning but it ended up to be really interesting. But yeah, it's probably something else then going to a grave and defile it.
