Range or magic defense (?) question

For some reason I'm not allowed to start a new topic in Combat Strategy forum and not allowed to post there, so excuse me for asking this here...

My characters have little problem with any type of damage, except range attacks. Especially mage inquisitor and archers (Varric, Sera) suffer from this.

It's most problematic around rifts. A rift spawns a few range-shooting demons, and unless there are places to hide from projectiles, my character is toast. Once she deals some damage and demons "spot" her, she can only run around chugging potions until dead.

Surely there's some solution to this? It's so stupid.

The only thing I can think of is range defense. But maybe it's magic defense. But measly percentages of such defenses that items give don't sound like enough.

How do YOU protect your character and archers from a few demons shooting projectiles at them? Please don't say to kill them faster, I'm playing Nightmare and it takes a while for a party to kill demons off.

This is how I play: I usually have two mages in my party. Every mage has upgraded barrier, using barriers as much as possible. Plus I use belt with +7% Spirit Resistance on one mage. Gear - +x% range defense. I'm currently at lvl 9, going to start In Hushed Whispers. I don't feel I straggle.

I hope it helps. :)

Use barriers on your characters, use stealth on rogues, and have warriors draw aggro.

Sorry, but killing them faster IS the best way, especially on nightmare. A couple wraiths can ruin your day pretty quickly if you don't take care of them asap. Focus on them first and make sure your tank is drawing the aggro away from your other party members.

I play a DWR and I always target the missile mobs first with my main character whether they are Archers, Mages or Wraiths.

Take out ranged characters first, have your warrior draw aggro while your rogues/mages attack.

If you have a Knight Enchanter in your party, the sphere they can cast stops projectiles.

And if you have Jaws of Hakkon, you can get the new Aegis of the Rift ability that deflects projectiles.

Keep in mind that Mark of the Rift is basically an insta-kill for wraiths and despair demons. Granted, you don't want to waste it on just one, but if you see several of them grouped together, it may be worth using.

About ranged vs magic defense. Wraith do elemental damage so I would invest in magic defense if I wanted to have passive defense. I find archers more annoying. ;)

For rifts, take Cassandra (Templar), Vivienne (Knight Enchanter) and another mage who has either ice or fire spells, Every time you beat the first horde of demons, just use dispel (Cassandra has one in the Templar spec) on the little red circles before they spawn to cancel it. This should make horde fights easier. Also having 2 mages gives you more barriers and Cass is an easy demon killing machine and Vivienne is almost untouchable.

Now I know what I've been doing wrong: I don't use barriers, unless I take Solas or Vivienne along and they automatically use them.

Dang it, it's so annoying to switch party in the middle of nowhere, I'd rather try to beat this rift a few more times than trudge all the way here again. The nearest camp would take me about 10 minutes to get to, I think, and I'd probably run into hordes of annoying easy-to-beat mobs on the way. Seriously, I hate this failing "fast" travel design in this game.

Are you under-leveled? What area are you in? Who's in your party? No offense, but from reading your posts, it sounds like maybe you're in a little bit over your head with nightmare difficulty.

I can't think of any area where it would take 10 minutes to get from a camp to a rift, except maybe hissing wastes, in which case, unless you are end-game, you probably are under-leveled, and those rift demons will destroy you.

I gave my main char a barrier spell and that solved the problem with this rift.

It might not be 10 minutes, but with annoying low-level battles it might take all 10. I don't even want to mention how often it's not a straight walk in a line, but an attempt to find a way around mountains or something.

On a side note, is there anything that can build guard automatically? I think I heard something about it. I mean a crafting material that can build some guard when inserted on hit.

Another question: if there any way I can respec my main char to be a knight enchanter? I don't even have the tree and the trainers are gone.

I'm afraid there is not. If you chose another specialization.

There are several crafting materials that give guard on hit.

Yep.  Mentioned that in the dupe thread.  (Mods can merge these, I hope.)  Obsidian and silverite give +3 and +5 to guard on hit, respectively, in one of their two fade-touched forms.  Farming them is tedious, but worth it.  My whole party gets full guard in a hurry now, and I use 2 mages and a rogue.

That will work on weapons or armor, BTW.  Don't waste it on both.  Nothing seems to stack in this game.  Fade-touched snoufleur skin gives +1% heal on hit (I think also in 1 of its 2 forms) and that's the perfect complement.  (E.g., use +guard on weapon, +heal on armor.)

Where do you farm those? I looked in the wiki but it only mentions areas, not precisely which enemies you need to kill.

P.S. And going by another thread, I'm a she not a he, isn't my skull feminine-looking? ;)

Gah! /redface

Sorry!  Forgive this old dude who grew up in different times.

Silverite seems most abundant in Emprise de Leon, going up Alphonse's Pass, and in 2 of the 3 dragon areas.  Also in some of the water pools.  I'm not sure where obsidian is most common.  That can be found in a lot more areas than silverite.

You can find a lot of Obsidian in the Dragon area in the Plains. Other places, too, but that's one I definitely remember.

Yep.  Mentioned that in the dupe thread.

I do not condone mods, dupes, glitches or exploits, in any form or shape

It appears this thread (not to mention the double threads) is no longer for me.

Oh, good grief.  "Dupe thread" as in "duplicate thread", not "duplicating thread".

Wait.  You trolling me bud?  <_<

Take a Sword and Board Tank, take the Agro and use Block (Shildwall) on the right timing.
