I don't have Hakkon yet, is it worth the money?

I admit that while DA:I wasn't that bad, I wasn't terribly impressed with it either (Long live DA: Origins :P ).
So is the DLC something that improves on the game's shortcomings?

Depends what you like and expect to see - the region has been designed from a scratch and is kind of a vertical maze, quests and side-quests are more focused (not that many cutscenes tho), the difficulty is up (encounters with enemies can be fun or frustrating, depending on level, equipment or set difficulty) and story-wise it throws more light on Avvars and their culture - as well as gives us a few interesting tidbits that are or may be relevant later.

I purchased it in error while trying to use the Origin discount at the time, and while costly, the content will pay itself off for my games due to multiple campaigns. The lore, history, storyline, resources, and challenging combat will aid the on-going sessions and end game content. Personally recommend it before encountering the end of the MQ, but I enjoy the insights of the Mages, including Solas.

Empty map, huh? Lol, didn't play Hakkon much, ey?

Anyway - it's really not difficult to add new hair or beard option considering that Geralt began with only ONE, maybe two - not even a fifth of what DAI began with. Plus, there's no other way to customize his looks.

There are only a couple of hairstyles I even consider decent in DAI. The eyebrows too. I wish they'd release just one nice hairstyle free. Just one. Please.

You might see a few free hairstyles as nothing. Maybe it isn't to you. So far, I like the dlc given every week by CDPR. It's a nice thing to look forward too. Some may say how those things wouldn't be hard to add and could have already been added to the main game and was only "given" out free as publicity.

Perhaps that is true, the same can also be said for the storage chest and the BE. It can also be said for the plethora of armors, jewelry and weapons offered as paid DLC's in DA2 and ME2.

I will admit, Hakkon fell short for me. The lore offered wasn't worth it. I didn't feel it added anything worthy for replay value and I found it stale. Perhaps I will feel the same thing whilst playing the expansions for TW3. But I am glad that some people enjoyed it and I am hoping Bioware took suggestions to heart and the next dlc will better suit me.

It just seems silly to fault CDPR for giving free items because "it's not that difficult to do it!"

How about this? How about as gamers, we encourage all companies to adopt better practices concerning dlc and expansions and encourage them to release finished games so we don't have to download patch after patch after patch after patch. Why not encourage all companies to recognize that we are their customers for a reason and if companies-- whether CDPR or any other company-- want to offer free items in a day and age where microtransactions and $3 armor, skins and weapons add-ons are the norm, it should be encouraged, applauded and mimicked.

Or you know, we could all just fight over whose dad can beat up whose dad and the thread closes and all of the great suggestions are lost and unread.

Edit: The last part was not directed at you, midnight. Just in general.

I do see it more as a publicity stunt - not necessarily a malicious one, but from a perspective of someone like me (graphic artist/illustrator) it's like having an art blog on which you throw in a sketch or a w-i-p every now and then, rather than a polished work in longer intervals. And while I see the value of such practice, especially in the world/Internet of today, I still prefer seeing more meaningful content appear once in a while - just like I'd prefer for CDPR to just bundle things like hairstyles together rather than splitting them into smaller units.

If Hakkon fell short for you, that's fine. At least you're not claiming that it was "yet another empty map", which is simply untrue.

Thanks for the responses. Hmm, I guess I could give it a stab when it's on a sale or as a part of a bundle with future DLCs.

Currently busy with TW3 and planning a new DA: Origins playthrough anyway, so it's gonna take time.

Actually, the smaller DLCs (16) are in fact free.

I never said they weren't. Glad we cleared that up. I specifically spoke about the paid DLCs covered by the season pass.

There is a critical difference between these terms.

No there isn't. Not aside from the one that you and others want to make up to make some developers seem better when they call their DLC "expansions".

No they aren't the same thing, never have been, never will be.

Yes, they are. You can say they're not, but that doesn't make it right. DLC literally means "DownLoadble Content", not "cheaper and smaller add-ons". Likewise, expansion refers to an add-on that *expands* onto the core game. The size of the package in question is irrelevant. The terms are synonymous with each other.

The CONCEPT of DLC was supposed to be a continuous supply of small content packs but considering most distributions is done via digital distribution, the difference got, unfortunately, lost somewhere in the middle.

I'm fairly certain the concept of DLC was to sell fans of games extra pieces of content after the game had been released.

But hey, it's not nearly as cool or edgy to point out facts, it's much more entertaining to invent a narrative to try and convert people to whatever our ideology is.

When did you do it in the story?  I'm getting ready for WHWM and Into the Abyss.  I was thinking about doing it after I get those two quests knocked out.

It seems an exaggeration to compare it to the Hinterlands, since unlike the Frostback Basin zone, the Hinterlands is essentially our hodgepodge map where we get the ball rolling in gathering influence. Most of what we do in the DLC area is basically dealing with the Jaws of Hakkon, the Avvar clan, and trying to find a way through to their icy stronghold. I'm also fairly certain that there is only one actual fetch quest in the entire thing.

I'd say the zone in the vanilla game that runs similarly to this one would be Crestwood, since like Crestwood, most of the basin is dedicated to the main quest, and the environment changes as the quest progresses.

I would do it after the main campaign, if only because some dialogues change depending on whether or not Corypheus has been defeated.

I think it's best to do after the main campaign, but while the dialogue reflects defeating Corypheus, certain companion combos have banter that reflect otherwise. I took Dorian and Cassandra to the basin, and they talk about Corypheus as if he's still alive.

Ah, excellent.  I know that Solas disappears from Skyhold post-game, but he's available as a party members.  Just to make sure, is he available for the DLC?  I read some non-spoiler tips that suggested that he would be a good party member for lore, as well as Dorian, Cass and possibly Cole.

Only if you do it before the end of the game. Solas, as well as any other companions who leave, will not be available for the DLC if you do it after the end.

Okay, I'll do it close to the end, just after Arbor Wilds.  I'd rather have Solas around for that part.  Dorian and Varric won't be going anywhere, since Dorian's affection is extremely high and I've been working on Varric's personal quest.  Thanks for the heads up guys!  I'm off to go knock out Into the Abyss, and this time, I won't kill off the remaining Warden by bad choices at the War Table.  I wrote down a little cheat sheet.

I believe that the devs left that quest to a War Table mission because of a lack of remaining resources, but it still chaps my hide that something as big as the potential future of the Wardens in southern Thedas comes down to a bloody text-only quest.   <_<

I don't know, I've heard a lot of good things about TW3.  I wouldn't call it a drag based on the poster feedback, but then again, I haven't played the game.

Also, you might want to read the suggestions.  No one is asking BioWare to copy all of TW, but stuff like more cinematics for side quests, and more connection between zones to the main plot are some damned fine suggestions.  I support those, and I don't have to play the TW series to get behind that.

As I said, perhaps it is. It isn't malicious. As a hobby, I sculpt jewelry and travel to art shows and craft fairs to sell my pieces. With every purchase I include a free gift. The free gifts are usually made from left over or scrap clay/resin and metal clay that I use, but I still put work into it. I still sculpt it, kiln it, glaze it and make it into jewelry. I know programming is completely different, but effort still goes into it. I think it's a great thing and I wish more companies would do it. It isn't hurting anyone and it says, "Hey, thanks for buying this game we worked so hard on. Enjoy!" Also, I wouldn't mind if they bundled it, but I actually like getting it piece by piece every week. Gives me something to look forward to and as for meaningful content-they are releasing that, too. If they give me two fantastic expansions that keep me replaying and bring me a lot of enjoyment, it's enough.

If Hakkon fell short for you, that's fine. At least you're not claiming that it was "yet another empty map", which is simply untrue.

No, I don't think it was a terrible dlc. It did have some nice scenery and more time with Harding is always great. It was nice learning about the earlier Inquisition and the Avvar, too. If I am honest, if a friend hadn't given it to me as a birthday gift, I would have waited until it was on sale. It was too pricey, imo and little to offer for the $15.00 price tag. I think it could have been so much better and it felt really thin to me. That is my opinion and YMMV, and that is completely okay.

I'm all for containing the that is shady microtransaction practices - but that wasn't the issue that I was addressing with my previous comment.

That was part of the general comment. I should have been more clear in my edit, my apologies. I was just trying to say that when we see a company doing something nice--and promotions and publicity isn't a bad thing, it is what businesses do--we should not argue about it. We should not criticize. Anytime you can treat customers as customers and not as cash cows, that should be applauded. Instead, people just want to argue, "My game is better than your game!" I say the more great companies we have, the more great games we get. It's a win-win.

That's fine.  I don't plan on picking it up for full price either.  I might not pick it up, since I wasn't thrilled nor impressed with my own experience in the TW series.

Still, I would encourage you to read some of the ideas in this that would work for DA games.  Almost no one, save maybe a few exceptions, is asking BioWare to completely copy TW completely.  Youtube rarely does a game justice anyhow, unless you watch a full LP.   I've been reading the thread will an open mind, and there are some other great ideas.  Hate the TW series, but don't hate the ideas that CDPR has come up with.  I know it's a big thread, but when you skim past the occasional bickering and random insults, there's a lot of neat stuff in here.

Now, I'm off to go do Abyss for real.  Catch you guys later.

Be excellent to each other.   :P
