I've never played any of the Witcher games also and picked it up because the reviews and praise were out of this world. After about 25 hours in, I have to say I'm a little underwhelmed. The story and the side quests are very nuanced and it does make the game feel less of a chore when you're asked non stop to be the resident errand boy.

On the other hand, the combat is awful and clunky and it really dampens the experience. The fall damage is laughable! Geralt loses like 1/3 of his health falling five feet. It doesn't even make me want to explore on foot. Riding on horse is even worse. Roach is the dumbest horse AI in the history of video games. Just drop a Mako from the sky. I'd rather drive that.

Anyway, the take from all this is that BioWare needs to put more effort into their side quests and story and stop pretending to be a halfhearted open world game. Oh, and the Witcher 3 conversation cutscenes gave me a good dose of nostalgia. Bring that back, BW.

Combat in 3 is a lot more ahead for me than in prior games yet I can understand that it's very clunky for others.

I gave a + because I too want to see more effort in the side quests and story, more meaningful open world. I like the cutscenes personally, heard some other veteran bioware players say they prefer shorter cutscenes but I like DAO and Witcher 3's cutscenes personally.

I agree with the cutscenes. To me a lot of emotion could not be achieved in TW3 if it was two wooden mannequins just standing, wiggling and staring at each other. Can you imagine if the entire Baron quest went like that? ugh.

I absolutely love love love that you get to play from Ciri's perspective as the Baron is retelling the story. It's definitely in the camp of SHOW rather than TELL and it works superbly. It also doesn't hurt that I find playing as Ciri more enjoyable.

How? She has less abilites, can't parry or use signs and is generally clunkier than Geralt. Do you just find playing as her more enjoyable because she's Female?

Not sure about clunkier when she's much faster and delivers her blows with less ballerina spins. I felt that she had more responsiveness than Geralt, if anything. Lol at throwing the female card even though I never mentioned anything of the such.

I cringed a bit when I saw the female card being thrown XD I liked that she could warp around and be all magical, but I prefer Geralt honestly.

I was just curious, she may move faster but controlling her is a lot more rigid. I threw the female card in their because I was just curious whether you liked playing her for her or because she was female. I've seen many people making noise about how she is more enjoyable to play as Geralt, even though she has little to no options available to her, but since she's a female it automatically makes her better than Geralt.

Errand boy? Sounds familiar

At least TW3's main story and side quests are very well done

I've seen that a lot, too. Not saying that in this case it holds true, by I have seen a lot of people say she is better because they can play as female.

I like playing as Ciri, as it gives a different perspective, but I really love Geralt. I also love the combat, but I understand a lot of people don't. I really love the alchemy and fighting movements.

I think Geralt's personality divides a lot of people and in Ciri's case they are just relieved to play as someone who is a bit more personable.

I can agree with that, Geralt is kinda of a generic badass at the beginning of the game, but he does get out of it eventually. Ciri, I honestly don't see how she is more personable, unless you read the books prior to the game, you really know nothing about her. Going by her gameplay segments, the only thing we know is that she is nice and good with a sword.

You have to keep in mind that a lot of people are just picking this up even though it's the third in the series. To them, they don't even know who Geralt is either. Honestly, I was completely confused when I started it and had to watch some youtube videos and read the wiki to catch up on the backstory. Imagine someone who doesn't even bother to do any of that. Geralt and Ciri would both be two new characters for them and they'll probably favor the one who doesn't whisper or grunt her lines in every conversation.

I see your point. Fair enough.

While we're on the topic of Ciri, am I the only who thinks her running and walking animations are god-awful?

Maybe not godawful but... she sure looks like she's walking on too high heels.

On the other hand Geralt looks a bit like he has wooden balls for knees... or just learns how to wear sexy leather thong underneath all that armor. Uncomfortable, owwww.

To be fair, the whole point of witchers is to be errand boys. Plenty of monsters to kill, treasure to find that is guarded by monsters, people to rescue from monsters, etc.

At least Geralt looks like he has some life in him and I don't think the high heels are the problem, because the sprinting animation is definitely not that stiff and awkward.

I don't have much issues with Geralt's sprint animation either. It's mostly slower running/walking in both cases that has something a tad awkward in it.

I actually love Geralt's walk/run animation, probably one of the best in any game IMO.

I have no issue with Geralt's movement. Although I must say that Inquisition had better scaling/climbing up to the hill animations. :P

Slight spoiler ahead:

So, I finally made it to Kaer Morhen.

I must say, that apart from finding a great deal about every individual Witcher and their past, the drunk scene completely tops everything I've ever played. :D

Even though I already knew a little about the Witchers thanks to the books, this was a great bonding moment.

"Lambert, you're a genius!"

Who needs signs and parry when they can simply warp behind enemies and backstab every one to death. She is OP :P

I literally destroyed an entire army with her in Novigrad

Yes, I saw that part in a video.. I didn't like it myself. She outshines Geralt in too many ways IMO.

Having just finished the Witcher 3 I hate to say it but I agree with the OP on this one. While some aspects of DA:I are superior to the Witcher imo (the way romances are handled chiefly), in terms of the plot I was blown away by the Witcher 3. The ending I got felt entirely like my own and there are actually 3 completely distinct endings you can get in addition to the small details shown in the ending side show. Every sidequest I did felt interesting and purposeful (the woman with the pan was my favorite) and I can't recall one fetch quest in the game. If there were any they certainly didn't feel like fetch quests.

To me the villain in the Witcher 3 was also superior in terms of the actual damage they did. The Wild Hunt felt like a real threat to the world and Geralt specifically whereas I never felt that Corypheus was a threat to the Inquisition, let alone all of Thedas. Because of that the final battle of the Witcher 3 was so satisfying and who I ended up making friends or enemies with felt like it mattered in the end. Whereas the final battle of Inquisition....'disappointed' isn't a strong enough word for what I felt.

As of right now it seems like for any possible future Dragon Age games Bioware could stand to learn some things from CDProjeckt Red in terms of sidequests and just execution of plot overall.
