Ok I will try. Its because I just saw some fan made tw2 vid and I think it was little Ciri I saw there
I tried to bullet point it without giving too much away but reading this spoiler gives away like 80% of the book series, just FYI. Also this is not short because your answer covers just about all the books. If there is a shorter way to answer your question I don't know it, haha.

Geralt and Ciri are linked through destiny. It's how witchers are chosen and Geralt wanted to test it out and see if destiny was real or not. He wasn't even sure if he was even linking himself to the baby at the time (Ciri was still in the womb at this point) Geralt also has no intention of taking the child to become a witcher at all, he just wants to know (for presumably reasons related to his own mother and the deal she made) if destiny really exists.
Ciri's father, going by Duny at this point, tries to leave to Nilfgaard in secret (his lineage isn't known to his wife or mother-in-law but they stop trusting him through the years and Ciri's mother makes sure Ciri isn't on the boat trip he planned for them.
Ciri's mother dies when she tells her husband Duny that Ciri isn't on the boat (they both are already on the boat and on the way back to the empire) and there is a magic storm/portal to take his family back in secret. Her death was the Emperors fault but not murder as she dies in the fighting and rocking portal taking the boat away.
Both of Ciri's parents are assumed dead now and Duny now goes back to reclaiming his empire and now goes by his real name, Emyhr
Time goes by and Ciri's grandmother was trying to find a good prince for her to marry, she was about 10-years-old at this point and about to meet Geralt for the first time as she escaped into the forest protected from humans by elves and dryads. Geralt was going into the forest for other reasons.
Geralt keeps her safe on her journey and returns her to her people, along the way he realizes who she is and that they really are linked through destiny
Duny/Emyhr invades Cintra (Ciri's home) to reclaim Ciri, and his mother-in-law is killed in the invasion (he needed her out of the way for his plan) Ciri managed to escape with the help of a Nilfgaadian that isnt a Nilfgaardian.
Ciri and Geralt meet again on the road, having no real options to take her elsewhere Geralt takes her to Kaer Morhan to become a new witcher, but mostly he just wants to protect her. Princess Cirilla is presumed dead by the world now, only the Witchers know the truth.
Ciri, while taking to sword training very well, has no ability to cast the witcher signs, not even a tiny spark. But she clearly has very powerful magic. In comes Triss, Triss helps to a point but Yennifer is soon needed.
Many things happen, unrelated to your question but the important part for you is that Duny/Emyhr is still looking for his daughter
Turns out there is a prophecy about Ciri's child being able to conquer the world. It's why the elves want her, why the Lodge wants her, why her father wants her, to control the world, to travel through worlds, basically Ciri is among the most powerful people in the witcher-verse and people want to control her young because adult Ciri, fully in control of her power would be impossible to control.
Ciri doesn't know that Emyhr is her father in all this, neither does Geralt because where would he have seen the emperor of Nilfgaard?
Geralt, Yennifer and Ciri all go through hell getting back to each other when a attack splits them all up.
At the moment the 3 come together again, in comes the Nilfgaard army, with the emperor and Geralt puts together Duny/Emyhr's plan

He recognizes Duny as the Emperor and turns out Emyhr's plan all along was to take Ciri back to Nilfgaard, take his throne back, marry or otherwise get his daughter pregnant with his child, and have his son/grandson conquer the world for him.
Since Geralt puts it all together Emyhr orders Geralt and Yennifer killed to keep his relationship to his daughter secret and only stops when Ciri, who understands none of this and doesn't recognize the emperor as her father, starts to cry and I guess his plan to knock up his own daughter just goes away.
Bottom line, Emyhr get's Ciri's mother killed, has her home burned to the ground and her grandmother executed all in his attempts to father his own grandson for politics. Worst. Dad. Ever.
That is the long and the short of why Ciri isnt with her real dad and even more of a reason why Geralt becomes Ciri's father over the years. Geralt, though everything over the years does anything and everything to protect Ciri from so many outside forces. Not to control some future baby, but because he loves Ciri like a daughter. Sort of like how Vesemir becomes a father to Geralt, even though he isn't Geralts biological dad.
In the 3rd game Emyhr seems to only want Ciri back so he can abdicate the throne because he has caused 2 major wars in only a handful of years and Nilfgaard isn't 100% behind this whole invasion plan. It cost lives of their children sure, but when it starts impacting trade and merchant profits people have had enough and start plotting Emyhr's death. A death he hopes to avoid by having Ciri become a significantly less hated ruler.

I'd probably add that in TW3 Emhyr seems to have abandoned the old (sick) plan of fathering his own grandchild, and just wants to abdicate and have Ciri as his heir(empress).

Don't forget the part what Duny plan to do when he get Ciri back to Nifgarrd and why he has to leave Nilfgarrd to begin with. When people claim Ciri's emperess is the best ending I really hope they know what it means.
Ok! I wont read the spoils. Which book is that btw?
Pretty much all of them. The first 2 books are a collection of short stories and Ciri is only briefly in them, after that the rest of the books form a long saga that covers most of what is in my spoiler. From Blood of Elves on the books really become less about random witcher travels and events to a Geralt/Ciri epic.
The Last Wish
The Sword of Destiny
Blood of Elves
Time of Contempt
Baptism by Fire
The Tower of Swallows
The Lady of the Lake

Hence Duny is really an animal in books. In TW3 he is being white washed to death, I'm highly doubt Ciri would even bother to hear anywords from his mouth.
When I played the W3 I was only on Baptism by Fire and I took Ciri to see her father. Having now finished the entire book series I don't plan on doing that again!
If Geralt actually return Ciri back to Duny, I'm pretty sure that means the death of Geralt and Yennefer, given th couple know every dirty little secret behind Nilfgarrd's throne.
It's Nilfgaard with double 'A's btw. Don't mean to be a grammar nazi or something but my terrible OCD always kicks in when I see names spelt wrong.
Always wondered how Sapkowski game up with this name. 'Gaard' is old-fashioned Dutch meaning a walled garden (related to the 'gard' in Midgard) and he plays a lot with stuff of Dutch/Flemish origin, but Nilf?
Perhaps he combined the 'Nilf' of 'Nilfisk' (the famous Danish manufacturer of vacuum cleaners etc.) with 'gaard'?
Though I doubt 'Nilfgaard' means 'The walled garden that sucks' in Nilfgaardian .
By the way, that's one thing where TW and DA have nothing to teach other. Sapkowski's creation, like DA, has no linguistic consistency whatsoever when you look at place and personal names. Though, in Sapkowski's defence, I do get the impression he could have done a much better job - he's clearly done some research and is quite inventive when it comes to names - he just liked it this way I guess.
To some extent it also mirrors the real history of the broader central European region, which has a very complex ethnic and linguistic history. In a place like Gdansk / Danzig you could encounter High German, Low German / Dutch, Polish, Swedish etc names, not to mention names from areas further afield like Hungary, Lithuania, Novgorod etc.
I think someone involved with Witcher 3 has been on holiday to Devon or Cornwall, I came across bandits who called Geralt a "Grockle" which is a derogatory slang term used specifically in Devon & Cornwall to describe a tourist... LOL
Still waiting for the patch 1.07 to drop on PSN Europe, although some say the patch is not good anyway. At least CDPR are communicating with their fans on their forum etc...
Off topic: Gave up trying to play Batman Arkham Knight, my fingers don't work well enough (and unlike some people I don't believe in camping out on forums demanding pause function LOL) so traded it in got £32 back on it which I used towards Elder Scrolls Online which I am told can be played as a single player game and is again more populated than DAI.

Have never been to the CDPR forums to ask about anything; simply skip it all. AND while ESO seems to have some remarkable VO work, tis the population that is the worst part of MMO's. Pass on that title, too.

Why would you go to their forums to ask anything if you don't and won't play the game?

I'm sad to say that I have to put the Witcher 3 on hiatus until I get the money for a GTX 750 Ti. My GT 720m has tried it's hardest, and i've gotten pretty far (Skellege) but these 20 to 15 FPS drops have killed my urge to play. Cant wait to go back though.
Do you play only on Ultra or something? I am on a laptop woth GTX 860M 2GB which is equivalent of your desktop card and can play on stable 25-30FPS on high.
Also, am I the only one who finds it funny that after 271 pages, there was someone salty enough that he had to create a counter-thread to this one?

It was certainly not a "counter thread" but my suspissions about your intensions and motivations are clear now.Thank you for that thoughtful, insightful post.

Why DAI is a better"rpg" than the Witcher 3 (Don't be more like Witcher 3)
Right. You must excuse me if I am a bit sceptical of your own intentions.
I am just tired of all the TW3 vs DAI threads that keep popping up since the last month, posted by both TW fanboys (who then put is in bad, frustrating light) and TW haters (who, well.. do pretty much the same in their frustration).
There are ike 3 threads in both Scuttlebut sections, 2 in Offtopic and another 2 right here in Feedback.
Besides, I find it funny that you still created a thread to talk about DA:I's positive qualities (which is your full right), but instead you had bring up this thread and belittle TW3 in order to make a point, aka a pretty obvious counter-thread. At least that's how I see it.
Wouldn't it actually make more sense to bring your points here where they can be discussed with others, instead of sniping at this thread from another one..? Just saying.

Things aren't always what they seem on the surface but i couldn't care less what you or some random person believes or not. Both games have pros and cons and some prefer one over the other for different reason and personal taste.
I've joined the Drinkquisition about a week or so ago.
This is a bad decision because I cannot afford it.
I mean look at all the threads that pop up? I mean even music was its own thread. Sheesh!
I think it's funny how many threads pop up and the reasoning given is, "All these threads saying TW3 is better than DAI is popping up, so I want to make a thread saying that DAI is better than TW3!"
I believe I have seen as many, if not more threads defending DAI than anything. I wonder how many people actually read this thread, in particular. Except a few, I haven't seen many insulting DAI. I don't consider saying it could be improved or stating it's weaknesses an insult. I don't consider someone saying, "I don't like that game." an insult, either. There isn't a need to defend it, imo. Most here like both, just like one a bit more than the other.
