That sounds like a rather sweeping generalization. Polish games (especially adventure games) and its demographics are not as backwater as you might assume and feature much more than the usual macho tough guy. Just because The Witcher is the one well known outside the country, doesn't mean it's setting the mantra.

I didn't mean to be offensive, I think I'm being realistic. I myself live in a third-world country not far from Poland and I know that in general people in our part of the world share similar "backwater" mentality. Many would still hate homosexuals, degrade women, etc. You can't make it go away by pretending it isn't happening. In my own country I see with sadness how many people outright ridicule Bioware for including homosexual characters in the game, for example. You could say that they're just being most vocal, but I know how situation really is, what mentality really is like in general, that's why I know they aren't just being more vocal, it's a real picture of the prejudiced majority. I'd be happy if Poland was a lot different, but going by what I know about it, I find it hard to believe. Maybe in future that will change.

As for adventure games, they've always been more lenient with their perceived demographics in all countries.

Some people seem to be mistaking "acknowledge your race" with "be written around your race".

I guess I'm some of "those people" then huh..

Minor spoilers for the Witcher 3.

There's this one sidequest where a dwarf's workshop is burned down by someone. You track him down and talk to him. He comes off as a drunk asshat, but he reveals a little sob story about his dead mommeh and how he had to sell her tools for money.

Seeing as how that has literally nothing to do with him burning the workshop down so I turned him in. You do the crime you do the time buddy. The dwarf called the guards and they proceeded to hang him.

That shocked the living hell out of me, and I literally felt bad for the guy. But life goes on. I had bigger fish to fry.

Although short, that sidequest left a pretty big (yet minor) feeling of assholishness in me. I felt kinda guilty. That's how a sidequest should be done.

@kefka - yeah I see what you mean, TW characters are very independent - I like this and I don't. I like their agency, but don't always love that all the various characters seem at each others' throats, that it seems to always be a negative agency. I adore the 'building a team' aspect of Bioware games, and the fact that they can develop relationships/friendships with each other (Solas/Cole, Dorian/Iron Bull, Aveline/Isabela). Though I admit I'd enjoy seeing a betrayal along the lines of Yoshimo in BG2. Agreed re: Solas. He's far and away my favourite character in Inquisition :) Keep going with all the opinion-having, I love reading it!

Oh my and a Yoshimo reference! I'll be.. that's something to remember that far back, he was such a crap thief too anyway ugh. Imoen was based thief/mage.

Anyway I don't think I have too many more opinions without repeating myself for now, mostly I would just say that evaluating TW and DA has to factor in everything, I think the balance of all the factors weighs in favor of TW, but it's easy enough to find things to like here and there in both series all the time.

As far as TW3 goes I've been exploring some and I am not disappointed, it may very well be a mega Skyrim level success, although I can't say for sure. Some of the really hardcore gamers are already picking on how small the map is or things like that, but it looks like they really found away to keep that Witcher vibe while kind of expanding the scope in some ways.

Ciri is crazy cute also.

I haven't played very much of TW3 yet (though I did exhaust all the content in the prologue) and the game has borrowed a lot of elements from assassin's creed in terms of is map content. Treasure hunts, markings, etc. I'm not sure this is a good way of filling the world with content. Bioware's is bad - don't get me wrong - I'm just not sure this is better.

The side quests (all 4 or so of them) are better designed for sure but right now I haven't seen enough of the game to know whether that's because of resource allocation (TW3 doesn't have multi-gendered protagonists with multiple voice options, companions, or companion banter). There seem to be a lot more cinematics in TW3 than DA and I'd never thought I'd see the day that happened.

The actual side quest design is clearly superior to DAI. Bioware needs to learn how to design quests.

I too haven't played much yet but I agree about side quests so far.

One thing that strikes me as dubious is lots of space empty of contents. In DA:I there's loot everywhere, which felt too dense sometimes, in TW3 there are just long stretches of empty spaces (unless you pick every herb).

And man, do I miss companions! It feels so lonely running around with one character. And fighting alone just isn't as much fun, either.

Is that Blackwalls voice actor doing mutliple NPCs? Pretty sure it is but his imdb page doesn't mention anything

Does no one notice the little things? :D

TW3 actually has a useful, worth-a-damn minimap.  Geralt can climb instead of jumping like a maniac. Crafting allows you to dismantle unwanted items.

Played The Witcher for a few hours now. I have to say, the games is way better than DA:I. These guys down in Poland are 10 years ahead of Bioware.

It is completely amazing. Someone mentioned loot being everywhere in DAI-- true as that may be, it was useless. To me it seems as every inch has something to see. Granted, it is the first time seeing it, so everything has that "awe" factor.

I don't mind the combat and the few side quests have been really well written and thought out. I am actually looking forward to doing them all. Graphics are gorgeous. Someone said they were the same as DAI, but I am in the Xbox One and I see a large difference. My favorite thing, though? Roach. That horse knows how to get his ass in gear!

One thing I am ejoying, though I am not sure if it is good for DA4 is that when you are going after monsters you have to do research and investigate to figure out what happened. I like this detective work, so far :)

The horse mechanics are pretty sweet as well.

I need to play more with it, but I think this might be interesting for the next da game. For those not yet playing TW3, Geralt has a horse, however while geralt may be fearless, your horse is not and more time around monsters makes it scared and would kick you off and run to safety. Considering the equally dangerous and scary monsters in DA universe his might be something worth looking into.

I guess it's a gameplay vs. realism thing but I kind of want the opposite for Dragon Age. I do like the detail they put into that though.

I bought the witcher 3, and didn't play the previous games. ( except the witcher 2 but I couldn't stand the clunky gameplay combat ) Well, they improved their weakness, and it's much much better. I always said, improve and do not forget your weakness, do not only think about your strength. I even enjoy the combat now ! Oo !

And I agree, Bioware might have some things to learn from cdj project.Their world is much more immersive than what we had in DA:I. I feel a part of the world they created, That's a bit disturbing for me that I am already able to make this statement while I played the witcher for only two hours and DA:I, for more than 100 hours.

But what is especially impressive, is indeed the side quests. ( so far at least, I don't know how it happens after ) Even when they are very minor and not really relevant, it's still interesting. It's much more than, " oh well my mother is sick, go find me some herbs somewhere and come back to me, okay you did well, thank you, bye " one- two lines and we are done, without a real background telling a story behind.

For example in the witcher 3, there is an old woman who was asking me to find her stove, and it's amazing but even something so irrelevant became interesting with the story she told and the way the very minor and quick quest happened... Sometime, I have choices, and I can choose how to react. I only played a few hours, and I am already thinking that the game was worth the price I paid lol.

Playing the witcher 3 made me also realize how we lacked cutescenes in DA:I. I was really surprised how many times I got cinematics even when it was just about asking some peasants about a woman, requiring only a few lines. I wondered why I was so surprised. Either DA:I really lacked cinematics or The witcher has usually more cutescenes ? I don't know.

Also the animations of the faces are so great. Wow, I've watched a dwarf talking about how humans are racists toward him, and his facial expressions were so sorry that I actually felt for him, while it's only my first witcher game lol. ,

The only infortunate thing is that I didn't play the previous episode lol. Sometime I feel I miss some things, and the witcher 3 made me want to try the witcher 2 again ( despite the harsh combat TT ). So now I am conflicted.

I'm not at all a witcher fanboy. But I am able to admit when a game is really good. And so far, that's what I feel. I'll see later.

If the only they take from Witcher 3 is better side quests and quests in general I'd be happy with that.

Given the choice between a fixed protagonist or my own, I'd pick my own. Also for me an adventuring party is better than a single person. Not deal breakers either though.

I've not had a chance to play much of W3 either but was blown away with what I have played. Down graded graphics really? Not sure how much more awesome my machine - which is fairly beefy could take.

When I played DAI I found that DAI's sidequests and overall story arcs for each zone had a real background telling a story.  The companions you brought out with you would react to even the smallest of quests, even the "here's your medicine...ok you did well thank you bye" quest you mentioned.  I'm glad you're finding it in another game, but it's too bad you missed all that in DAI.

I did almost every single side quest in DAI and I can only say that one zone for certain had a real compelling questline and it was Crestwood.

I take your point, but we have a little more say on who our Inquisitor is. In POE we have even more say on who our Watcher is.

But yeah we do have a fair bit of control on the type of person Geralt is - as to how much, well I guess I'll find out soon enough.

No, it didn't. DA:O had a fixed good character, with the occasional option to go full on balls-to-the-wall insane with pointless cruelty. But in terms of meaningful variation in a character, DA:I is the an exemplar in how you can customize your PCs emotions, beliefs, and personal relationships.

Something else I noticed, something that would be a good lesson: showing the fallout from the war or razed towns/settlements. So far-- and I am not very far in-- there has already been some pretty sad things to see.

Spoiler
