If the final battle against Eredin is anything but a Gwent showdown, I'll be severely disappointed.

-"I'm the destroyer of worlds Geralt"

-"Gwent, you know it ?"

-"Oh yea actually I have an awesome Nilfgaardian deck !"

I think there's a screenshot somewhere. Not sure where I saw it. Oh, here it is.

Spoiler

In my first playthrough I was like, "Ain't nobody got time for that" but on my second one, I'm obsessively trying to get all the cards. That damn game is addictive!

I don't like to add people to the ignore list but after reading the last page on this thread, I just did. It's exhausting to come to this thread to read honest and constructive feedback and then have to deal with posts with snarky and provocative comments and sometimes even insulting. I'll just say this, please ignore that person and use the report button too. If no one replies, he will give up at some point. If not, then his comments will go straight into the void. Let's keep this thread great and full of constructive and valid feedback since, you know, we actually played both games.

Anyway, something funny (well, in a way) happened in my game today. I had just cleared an abandoned site and noticed there were a few beehives near some villagers. I tried to cast Igni without hitting them but completely missed the explosive barrel right next to them. LOL Needless to say that everyone started screaming and I killed two villagers, which I honestly didn't think it could happen! I knew they would react to you if you try to attack them but I didn't know you could actually kill them!

And speaking of explosive barrels. A few days back I was fighting some bandits and noticed there were two barrels next to each other, stupidly casted Igni and maybe I was too close but the damn things exploded the second I did it, without giving me the chance to run away and sent Geralt flying into the air. He died straight away along with the bandits and I couldn't stop laughing. lol Man, I love how you can interact with the environments and NPCs.

You're absolutely right. I apologize for getting drawn into it, especially since I have warned people not to engage with him. I added him back to ignore and won't bother with giving him attention in the future. Again, I apologize for my part. The last thing I'd want is for this thread to get closed and I have a suspicion that he is trying to do just that.

As for your last paragraph, I didn't know you could kill NPCs either. If a game allows me to jump, I have a compulsion to just try to jump over everyone. I also like to run around and bump into people. I don't know why, but it's hilarious to me. I also like to have Geralt walk around drawing his fist back at people. It's quite satisfying, especially after someone calls me a freak.

I also like how Roach just runs over people in villages. I'll just stand right in the middle of the village and whistle for her, she just plows into anyone in her way. We're two peas in a pod. ^ - ^

It's not your fault, his last post was really provocative, I would've replied too.

HAHA I know how you feel! I don't even try to avoid people, I just sprint towards them. And that happened to me too, I was in Novigrad and wanted to get to the closest merchant because my inventory was full so I called Roach and all I could hear was, "Hey! Ow! Watch it!" and I looked back and Roach was running over everyone.  At that moment I was so proud, I had a tear in my eye.

I don’t agree that Skyrim is just generic medieval fantasy; it clearly has some depth to it and a large part of the ‘feel’ they went for is actually rather Conanesque sword & sorcery-ish, rather than generic quasi-medieval European.
Having said that, Morrowind is clearly Bethesda’s creative peak so far. Ken Rolston, who is highly regarded in the world of pen & paper RPG’s, was one of its designers. Rolston was also involved in the far less memorable Kingdoms of Amalur (which did have some interesting and original stuff from a lore and gameplay perspective) and, well before Morrowind, was involved with Runequest and Glorantha.

I don’t think Bethesda will ever touch the Morrowind-esque kind of fantastic again, though.
CDPR…maybe. I’m actually hoping they’re going for a non-Witcher, non-standard fantasy IP after or alongside Cyberpunk for their next fantasy cRPG.
Or perhaps we’ll get something out of Scandinavia, Funcom did a great job in visualizing Hyboria in Age of Conan and while they are now a much reduced force, there’s still experience, talent and a liking for the non-standard stuff up north.

It is to bad that Funcom never realized the potential that they were sitting on. They could have done a great RPG series based on Scandinavia and mostly Norway as that is their country of origin. They already had the amazing writing team, people who played Dreamfall should know. They had alot of money once upon a time, and the Norwegian goverment gave them alot of backing and were interested in investing more in the gaming industry here. And then they went ahead and just made MMO after MMO, the writing team left and they are almost bankrupt.

I think Skyrim is one of the best fantasy world designed for gaming. It makes sense from a world building perspective, it is not to big for its own good, the world is filled with exciting things to do and even though it is abit more grounded in its theme it still has the fantastical i have come to expect from Bethesda. I would agree that Morrowind is better design wise, i enjoy Skyrim more. I am abit biased though.

My main problem with Val Royeaux is not precisely the design, it is the lack of the things we heard so much about over the last few games and books. The White Spire and Grand Cathedral could have been used for so many of the games plot points. Its just a wasted oppurtunity. Though i don't think cutting zones would have made a better city, i think it was a bad choice made while developing the game.

Speaking of TW3 breath-taking view. There's a LOT of timelapse vids on youtube. Some of them look absolutely gorgeous with all the day^night cycle and weather changes even with yt compression.

I just checked and I agree.

(don't forget to watch it in HD and full screen)

I love how you can see the amount of people that walks by in Novigrad and how the city lights up at night. To me this is what a world in a videogame should be like, to actually look alive.

No chance it was that last gen restriction nonsense. Just take a look at the GTA series. They have been doing major cities for well over a decade and I'd put Vice City, a 2002 game on the first Xbox, as a significantly better city than Val Royeaux.

After so many references to the majesty that is Val Royeaux over all the DA media over the years it was one giant tease.  Especially in a game all about religion and the Maker, the Grand Cathedral that is the seat of the Divine, isn't even visible, let alone a location you can go. Val Royeaux, the Orlesian capital, is also the capital city of the Chantry, you can actually pick the next Divine, but you can't visit the Grand Cathedral, not even worth a cut scene.

I'd much rather have one fewer zone if it meant we would have had a grand city like we've been told Val Royeaux is for several games, comics, books, etc. DA:O's Denerim felt like a city, DA:I Val Royeaux felt about as worth while and expansive as the Black Emporium

There are many restrictions from last gen but size of the map isn't one of them for sure, the fact that the game renders big maps already invalidates the size of Val Royeaux. The LOD streaming isn't an excuse either as DICE uses that for Battlefield so you know it's a function available in Frostbite. I just think Bioware prioritized rural country after the DA2 fallout. The only issue with Val Royeaux would be number of NPC's on screen and whether the engine is optimized for it, ie: Assassins Creed 1 was better optimized for this than GTA4 or GTA5 (don't know if it was an engine issue or a streaming issue).

I have invited folks to Ignore me, so this ain't going to be a problem. And some are correct that it would not bother me a bit if this thread were closed, but I am not actively attempting to do that. Don't have to, as there is page after page of nothing about TW3 gameplay and storyline entries; little about what should be recommended for the future of the DA series.

Fans asked Bioware not to have cities in DAI after feeling confined in DA2. This may be a factor in why there are no cities in DAI. And personally am glad to see the areas without them, but that comes from a personal bias against city adventures in RPG's.

Would like to see an easier method for hiding the UI for screenshots in future DA games; also a mechanic to remove the PC from the pics. While I have a few nice shots of DAI, they are not as prolific as the ones made for Skyrim.

I don't think anyone wanted "no cities" in DAI per se. It was annoying to to be confined to like, 8 boards or however many there were, over the course of the entire story, but that didn't sour anyone on cities. It just made them want more boards.

I really love the range of environments we've got in DAI, and I wouldn't trade most of them (I think we have one too many deserts), but I miss the city. Even back in 2012 and 2013, when I was rolling around on the ground speculating about what we'd see in DA3, I was all "Man, I hope we go to Val Royeau." When the jump to new gen consoles was confirmed in 2014, I was super excited for that. And we did (horaaaay) and now I hope we go to Minrathous. Or for real Val Royeau.

I really wanted to run around in a really awesome city. Denerim was... fine. Kirkwall was Kirkwall. TES cities are generally good, but even I have a tough time rationalizing around the fact that the imperial capital of this province has a population of 24.

More than anything, I miss my hilarious brothels. Where are they gonna put it? Not in Skyhold. Though I guess they could.

I think Novigrod or wherever it is will scratch my itch. Honestly, I'm enjoying TW2, but even if I wasn't, I'd play TW3 for the world experience it seems to be offering.

For some reason I suddenly remembered Alistair's quote on Morrigan "Can't you just crawl somewhere and ___?" I don't know why.

OT: I just found Triss' Rose of Remembrance. I don't know the story behind it but for some reason I had this feeling that it's got sentimental value. For those who's played the previous is probably grateful for finding little things like that.

Can skip having brothels again, but would not mind having an optional city; one that was not imperative to the story, but could be accessed if desired. Not certain if I want Val R to be it though; may prefer it to be the imagined apex of characters, and have lesser cities implemented while comparing it to this fabled locale.

And if I recall correctly, DAI only has three desert areas: Western Approach, Hissing Wastes, and the Oasis. After the first playthrough, I do not do much in the latter one besides gather desired items. But I adore desert terrain more than some other environs; comes from living in the SW for many years. Even hope TES VI is set in Hammerfell.

As for changes to DAI; seemed to be a direct reaction to the complaints made of DA2, and city enclosure was one of them.

Speaking of, are brothels in TW3 hilarious? In the first two games, they're just brothels, precisely as advertised, which is frankly disappointing.

On my 3rd playthrough of Witcher 3 and still discovering stuff, it's great.

OT: my cheap second-hand xbox 360 arrived today so been trying to play Witcher 2, forgotten how awful the xbox controller is for my poor arthritic fingers and the control system for the xbox version is horrible not at all intuitive after coming from a PlayStation. Think W2 is going to take me forever to play, also people have complained about the text in DAI and W3 but W2 is much much worse can't imagine anyone playing this sitting more than a couple of feet from their tv... LOL

Hilarious? not so much.

Tragic in a "kinda authentic-ish depictions of women in the sex trade?" A bit.

I tried a girl in the brothel on a lark.  She discretely did drugs before the R-rated shenanigans began....  Another one has a frank, intelligent discussion about using her trade to better her lot in life by saving up for her own establishment....

When you get the chance, play Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. It's greatness.

Honestly I love all Witcher games, but for someone who just came out of TW3, I think TW2 is more friendly. TW1 was a totally different thing, though I love it for what it is.

True. I will just say it's kind of a microcosm for what others have been saying regarding DAI and TW3s approach to dark content. Prostitution IRL is a complicated subject. TW3 tries to show that. DAI removed the brothel and all references to it....

From what I've played of TW2 (which is, I think, most of it, at least on Iorveth's path. I plan on playing through Roche's path as soon as I'm done, and before I play TW3), I think it can go too far in the other direction at times. It seems like it can be pretty relentlessly awful. Perhaps it's "realism," but... eh. That's just me.

I still think Dragon Age's handling of darker themes and content (and over the course of the series, there is some very troubling stuff) is both effective and affecting, though I grant that a lot of it is found in subsidiary materials ("telling not showing"). In the interest of not digressing off into a risky direction, I don't always think you need to show everything, and I'll leave it at that.

You should never go full grimdark. The brothels in DAO and DA2 were goofy (they could have easily been very, very different), and injected a welcome bit of levity that was sorely missed in DAI. And I've got to say, I laughed more than I care to admit at Elthon in TW2. I hope that sort of stuff is liberally peppered around TW3 as well.

Brothels in TW3 are anything but hilarious. You are going to be disappointed Tommy. During my playthrough, I've been to brothels only for some certain quests and gwent tournaments. The atmosphere and courtesans seemed dead serious to me.The owner of Passiflora(forgot her name) didn't hitch even a bit when Geralt tried to intimidate her. I think they are significantly different compared to the one in Kirkwall.

My favourite armour is actually the Cidarian cavalry armour. Too bad its pretty awful.

Spoiler

I just found an armor called "Thyssen Armor" in a Skellige treasure chest and it's the same model as this but it's black and red, decent stats too. And there's a longer version called "Oathbreaker armor" that I got in a Kaer Morhen treasure chest (pic below). Both are relic armors tho so they're random drops, but you can buy the diagram for the Thyssen armor in Kaer Trolde (lv 30 required).

The physics in this game is kinda funny at times, Geralt can slide down a mountain without taking damage, yet will harm himself mortally from a 6 feet fall.

I wouldn't even call it 'rural country'. With the exception of the rather tiny settlements of Crestwood and Redcliffe, none of the regions in DA:I give any indication of being recently inhabited except perhaps for a couple of farmers / hunters / hermits in the 'greener' areas. Based on the inhabited and abandoned houses, the Hinterlands had few people - nothing that could conceivably support the several intact or fairly freshly ruined castles in the area.

They are thematic zones, which does add to variety (a good thing) but also creates the impression of a very fragmented and rather unconvincing world (a bad thing).

It is to bad that Funcom never realized the potential that they were sitting on. They could have done a great RPG series based on Scandinavia and mostly Norway as that is their country of origin. Bio made a lot of weird choices, to be honest. I remember a video with Laidlaw & the team, way back in...2011? 2012? indicating the next DA game would go 'somewhere French' and the audience's reaction to it. People were stoked for 'Fantasy France +'. But what we got was something much less than that and often speaking with a bad French accent (yes I know some voice actors are native French speakers, but others aren't).

For the life of me I still can't fathom why Ferelden is in the game, or why there isn't a city in the game. Wilderness 'thematic' zones with a dungeon here and a rift and a bandit camp there are boring on their own. They may somewhat work in MMO's, but MMO's derive their liveliness and much of the fun from the players. They don't work that well in single-player RPG's without a network of settlements, ruins, plenty of somewhat dynamic NPC's / NPC extras etc. united by a web of quests, lore and story that create a 'living' sense of place.
