Well i am guessing they would hate it, alot. When we had the Fallout 4 topic way back when it was mostly just negative comments all the time. Alot of "old school" "hardcore" Fallout fans who likes hating on Bethesda, and trying to share their "opinion". So for that part i am glad its gone. Would have been fun to discuss the game with some of them though. The game has a whopping 4.7 on user score on Metacritics (PC version). Had no idea there would be so much hate and trolling around this game. I love it though!

From the words of some friends who are playing and a few of the students I work with, they all seem to really like it, though nearly all of them said it starts off slow, but gets really fun. I feel a lot better about the game since talking to them.

It's such a shame the Off-Topic section was closed off, I really would've wanted to know what the BSN community thought of Fallout 4.

My 1st impression is that it is a pretty darn good game (unless you do not like Bethesda sandbox to begin with).

1. Visuals are not great but it aint bad. It is pleasant.

2. I dont know what I am feeling is atmospheric or nostalgic. It feels very familiar... too familiar but mostly in a good way.

3. All the bad memories and frustration from Skyrim returns... Bethesda dont seem to listen to feedback or they simply dont care.

4. Game is fun - crafting is super fun.

5. Just.... avoid 3rd person and spare yourselves some horrid Morrowind retro animations...

In short, I was expecting much more -and- if anyone says: "Fallout 4 is all about gameplay and not visuals etc." I say: "Go play Fallout 3 again and save yourself some money."

I would highly recommend it but dont expect anything grand or "next-gen". Bethesda is playing it safe - they are kinda like post Jobs apple. Living off a wealth of legacy but has grown too fat and soft to take risk and innovate.

Above all else, they have grown annoyingly LAZY!!

Rant:

I can live with all the short comings but DARN you Bethesda, I have repeatedly told you since Skyrim that like a controller, you should pick TWO freaking keys for [Confirm/OK/Action/Default] and [Cancel/Go Back]. A and B for controllers and [User Action Key] and [Tab] for keyboard maybe? Why the hell are there [ E, Enter, Esc, Tab ] flying all over the difference menus!!?!?

Why no full controller support!!! Tis 2015!!!

Bioware should take note here too - Full controller support - I need to be able to switch and use controller / keyboard / mouse seamlessly - yes like The Witcher 3 and like I posted in CDPR's forum - I WANT to customize controller buttons like in Witcher 2!!

PC version of Fallout 4 gets a lot of hate and rightly so, the consolification is strong with it. And I'm not talking here about the pc - console "war", or the simplification of the game and its systems to suit consoles better. That's a topic for a different time and place and quite frankly a discussion that I'd really like to skip. What I'm saying is that it's a bad console to pc port with fairly common performance issues and it is missing some very vital things pc versions absolutely need.

Take FOV for example. It's locked to 75 degrees and there is no way to change it in-game. You have to tweak the ini files for that, if you know how. A FOV of 75! That's intended to be watched from a certain distance, while sitting on a couch and looking at a tv set. If I tried to play a game like that myself, sitting in front of a monitor, I'd be vomiting all over the place. And I know that from experience, among others the first Borderlands game had the same issue. There is a reason why proper pc ports of games with first person view have FOV sliders. Simulation sickness is a very real thing.

Then there is the fact that most of the keybindings are hardcoded. In other words you can never rebind them to better suit your needs. That leaves a lot of people in a difficult situation, like those who are left handed, or disabled, or who use a non-qwerty keyboard. Witcher 3 had that same issue as well when it launched but CDPR was very quick in fixing it. Bethesda on the other hand has a reputation of leaving the fixing of their games to modders.

Some of course just find the game itself in many ways worse than its predecessors. Or too similar to them. Even the majority of critics seem to think so as the average score is quite low for a Bethesda title. While I'm starting to warm up to the game a bit myself I understand their point of view very well.

Something for all developers to keep in mind: make sure your customers can play your game regardless of their platform. And if they can't, fix it.

I haven't done anything with the settings other than tweaking the graphics abit and i don't mind the FOV at all. Different strokes i guess.

I'm more sensitive to stuff like that. Many are. A useful rule of thumb: if you feel like your equipped weapon takes too much space on your screen while playing a shooter then the FOV is set too low. There is a huge difference between 75 and 90/105 degrees.

I personally dont mind the FOV as well but some people like TotalBiscuit complains that a FOV of 75 gives them motion sickness regardless of platform (Monitor, TV, etc). I think there are enough complains out there for developers to take this seriously.

What ticks me is that Bethesda does not seem to care at all about user complains and inputs. Whatever we rent/feedback/complain about in Skyrim, they ignore it and cut and paste it right into Fallout 4.

Yeah, the game is good but it is not that different from their previous. They have not shown the effort and sincerity in trying to improve things. No, they cant receive the praises and awards for not putting in the effort to improve. Whatever good there is, they have been praised and awarded. If Activision CoD, Ubisoft AC does not get a pass for such things, Bethesda sure is hell not getting a pass.

Sounds like my decision to wait and see with FO4 is getting better.

Typically the first things I alter are the FOV,I typically set at 90 and keyboard mapping. Whilst  I have no problem with editing .ini files, I prefer not having too.

I suppose PC gamers should be thankful they still allow modding, but got to wonder what they've spent all that time doing.

A couple of years of ago I picked FO:NV GOTY on a steam sale for around $10 and best $10 I ever spent. Maybe lightning will strike twice.

The moment I saw people complaining about having a voiced PC I pretty much tuned out of their "reviews" and waited to play the game myself.  I'm glad I did.  I've never played a fallout game before and pretty much can't stand Bethesda games.  Skyrim was okay but got boring.

So far, I like it.

I like having a PC with a voice.  The actor sounds really good.

The story is intriguing so far and I like the companions I've picked up so far.  Although I did shoot what I think was a potential companion in the face for annoying me. Dat freedom. :D

And the settlement building is awesome.   I think I spent most of my hours in game building my bases, it's kinda of addicting.

However,

I do think the controls are a bit clunky. Especially since I enjoy playing in 3rd person pov. Trying to fight when an enemy gets too close is a nightmare. And overall, I find the combat boring.

The PC's face animations are....none existent.  The VA has quite a bit of feeling in his voice, it sucks that the PC doesn't express to match the voice and sometimes the camera sort of awkwardly lingers on the PC with no one saying anything.

I've been having some annoying audio issues. Lots of static.  But this happens mostly in the main menu, not ingame.

Settlement building is addictive as hell...Why they decided to add a wall that restricts how much stuff you can put into your settlement is beyond me.  I was in the middle of building a large fence surrounding my largest settlement when the game told me I couldn't place anything else.  Cleaning up the trash scattered about does help lower the bar but it fills right back up the moment you add something new like a shack or something. Now I have several unfinished shacks sitting on my base until someone mods that limit away.

Wasn't there an issue with this for Mass Effect 3 aswell? To bad they didn't include it in the settings then. Hopefully they will get out a major fix patch for these issues soon so people can start playing comfortably. As you mentioned earlier it is a console port, and to be fair most games are nowadays. I remember when i booted TW3 on my computer and it suggested to me that i should use a gamepad and i had to select mouse and keyboard.

If I remember correctly Ubisoft even used FOV as an anti piracy method with Far Cry 4. Only legal copies of the game had a FOV slider. Console ports aren't necessarily a bad thing, people just tend have issues with them when it negatively affects the quality of the pc version. Controls, UI and FOV are usually the most messed up features, though thankfully FOV issues have become quite rare. But I am not confident that Bethesda will ever patch those. They never did with their previous games. Hell, even the ability to throw grenades with a single button, one of the most basic features of shooters, had to be modded in before FO4. And the most popular mod there is for Skyrim isn't a nude / porn mod but one that adds a proper pc user interface. That alone should tell a lot.

Well there was already a new patch out just a few hours after release, not the day one patch, but a seperate one. So we'll see what gets fixed the next few weeks. I am confident. Now back to the game, weeee. I will never leave my house ever again, until Christmas or something.

Agree, just finish my first run. FO4 is solid, good but not amazing. The story is much more interesting compared to FO3, companions are nicely done, crafting system is awesome (epsecially piper, handkook and Valentine ) but other NPCs and quest design are completely shadowed by TW3. As for graphic is mix bag, overall environment is done beautifully yet the low texture and character model is horrible, next high texture patch expecting. Best part of game, running those small colonies, Simcity -Fallout is really amazing.  Finally, bugs, bugs never changed.

Seriously. I've got like 5 or 6 hours played (including one early aborted run) and I've barely found my dog and met the minutemen.

So far, I really like the game, I really hate the dialogue system, and I really want the toolkit, because I've identified at least a dozen things I'd like to fix for myself.

I'd also like to know what bleeding moron decided that hiding your weapons when holstered would be a good idea?

Most likely the bleeding moron who works for the legendary bleeping moron who thinks that (keyboard) while we use W,A,S,D for directions, it is better to make the conversation selection use the arrow keys!

I mean WTF, why cant I use WASD to select conversation options!? Why suddenly arrow keys!!! As if people do not have enough hate for the new dialogue system... he/she has to make it worse. I use to be neutral towards such dialogue system but this arrow key thingie and that NPCs sometimes walk away is making me hate this dialogue system  :pinched:  :pinched:  :pinched:

That doesn't not make sense to me, since I think you can still move around when you're in a conversation... but then, if I couldn't use a gamepad to play this game, I probably just wouldn't play the game. Or I'd get a steam controller and hope for the best, maybe.

The dialogue gameplay is pretty bad, though. I guess it's the first time they're doing it, and it shows. I'm generally indifferent leaning towards in favor of voiced protagonists, but I much prefer the past silent approach from previous Beth games in this case.

Disagreed, this is the best dialogue system they've ever done and one of the best i have seen in any game really. It uses arrow keys because when you use WASD in a convo you move. Its in-engine, but non cinematic, which i prefer so much. Hate beeing locked into conversations like in Mass Effect, gah. The dialogue responses are well written, well paced, interesting and amazingly well acted, like insanely so. Best voiced protagonists in any game, well the female atleast haven't tried the man.

If you are still in the start of the game, i get it though. When you follow the main quest for abit you'll really see what this game has to offer on the story side. It opens up and its an entirely new experience, i was actually abit shell shocked and had to take a break because of it. Panzer summed it up quite nicely really, i disagree with some of the stuff he said and i would never compare it with TW3, but other than that he has the truth of it.

None of this is spoilery btw, or if you consider it so feel free to say and i will put it in a tag.

I've really only had a couple of interactions. I'm open to changing my mind - most of what I've done has been slowly and methodically stalking around and looting clipboards. Our character is a little excessively pre-defined for my taste, but I imagine some modding wizards will get some decent alternate start mods going as they did in Skyrim. I do think that the game is pretty great so far - in particular, it's one of the most nicely implemented CCs I've ever seen as well, although in retrospect,

Spoiler

Yeah, I've heard it's good, and I'm excited to play through it unspoiled. Historically though, and at least WRT to Bethesda games, I haven't stressed spoilers quite as much, because I've found that my most personally satisfying playthroughs and characters actually require a decent amount of metagaming, if only because I know what "fits" ahead of time with a particular concept I'm trying to express.

I think someone somewhere just needs to create a general forum or message board for discussing video games.  Come to think of it, it probably already exists and I just don't know about it.  :P
