Money wise, it could have been a smart move for them. TR was an underperformer.. I think Square was really alarmed by it. Enough to admit it. MS probably provided a guarantee of support no matter what.

You guys are saying it's cutting off gamers, but many gamers showed they didn't give a **** just a year before. While on Microsoft's end, they probably thought it'd be nice to have a platformer like that.. as Sony already has Uncharted.

That said, I own both platforms. I do it for this very reason.. I just like games. I'll go where the games are at. :)

hmmm?

Square released a press release awhile back where they fully admitted disappointment with their sales. Not just Tomb Raider, but everything.

Companies rarely do that.. especially the one we're posting at now.. like Bioware. But I digress.

My point is that I think they were looking for more help, besides gamers. Lack of demand put them in this position to begin with. It's not the Instant Win Tomb Raider of the old days... even though I think this new spin on the franchise is better.

I think I'm missing something, I'm still confused. What other games does Square make that have had disappointing sales? TR was only released a month ago, so it can't be those sales numbers which have disappointed them at this stage? What help were they asking for a year ago? Like a Kickstarter from fans?

I'm talking about the first one. They were disappointed with Hitman, Sleeping Dogs, TR..

They expected twice as much for TR especially.. but knew things like Sleeping Dogs were more iffy.

It's things like this that will make a company change strategy.

They're apparently happy with the new one, but not sure more than that.

Ah okay interesting. It's sad that the first one didn't sell well enough that they felt they were best served by going to Microsoft. I guess we'll see in a year or so whether overall sales were hurt from exclusivity or not.

Glad I cleared it up. It's probable that MS guaranteed a lot of support and funding, and they didn't have to worry about sales goals as much. Business wise, I can't blame them. They could just focus on making a game. And from what I know, MS doesn't really get in people's way much. Look at Casey Hudson.. even he works for Microsoft now, after leaving EA/Bioware. I bet he actually liked it better when Bioware was tied to them.

Bold. Why do people care so much about GOTY awards btw? :)

I've honestly stopped caring about them.  While I think it's cool that Witcher 3 is getting them, ultimately I remember that it's mainstream media giving these things out and how fickle and untrustworthy they can be.

But it just leads to alot of infighting among fans and we start to ignore games we actually like because one has to be better? Also it tells people what the game of the year is. I mean shouldn't we decide on our own what we like and do not like? I guess its an American thing i just don't get. No offense to the US or anyone that hails from there, i just don't get it. What i always liked about games and gamers is that we were down to earth, now its just another billion dollar industry.

Maybe its just the mood of the day. Thanks for a well thought out reply non the less.

I sometimes think gaming might have been better off if corporations hadn't discovered how profitable games can be.

It's a double edged sword. We probably wouldn't get most of these games in the first place. They require too much cash to make.. and that requires investors on a corporate level. I don't think games will ever exist well or for long without capitalism.

Interesting statement from the CEO of CDPR:

"This and next year will be devoted to the Witcher. Apart from the second expansion we have some additional ideas. They should help us animate sales in 2016."

Well, if it's any consolation, neither of them are probably coming when they say they're coming.

It's probably not a consolation.

Man, I want MEA though.

I hope they don't screw it up.  I reeeeaaaallllllyyyy hope they don't.  I really wanna love Mass Effect again.

Innnnteresting...I would think it has to be more than new gwent skins or outfits, since those have been free. Could CDP be reinventing DLC as we know it?

By focusing on Witcher, that doesn't mean they're slacking on Cyberpunk does it?

edit: I'd have to say this is my most anticipated game. Definitely not MEA...or anything else really.

It did well enough to get the sequel. TR2013 really was one of the best games that year, I think.

I really think they should consider long and hard just how much they want that exclusivity cash, because that goes a long way towards poisoning the well. It all goes back to building goodwill. Yeah, it's a few mil in the pocket from Microsoft, but how well does that stack up longterm to all the people who get annoyed at having to wait another six months? Not to mention, you can only launch a game once. Wouldn't you rather not limit that launch to a third of your potential buying audience?

I don't mind waiting, and I'll be getting it on PC whenever it releases, but I can't blame people who get annoyed at this sort of thing.

I get super annoyed at that.  I would really like to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, and rather amusingly, I recently made the switch from Xbox1 to PS4.  Another game I am looking forward to is Overwatch, and it will likely release on PC first and consoles later as well.

Do you still own the XB? Just get it :P I mean, if you're a fan.

I don't know.. don't want to tell you what to do. I don't mind exclusives. I just get exclusives from each. I have Bloodborne and the Uncharted Collection too. I generally get cross platform stuff on the Xbox, just because I'm invested in the platform in general (Xbox subscription).

Would we get as many games, no, not likely.  But I think the quality of the games we do get would be higher.  I just think gaming would be better off if more developers were as free as CDPR from publisher interference.

I want Bloodborne, but i don't want to get into the console stuff again. I might have to though. Well with PS4 atleast i can get the Last of Us beefed up version.

Publisher interference isn't good, true. But the money isn't necessarily interference. Not always. And it's very much needed. You can't make AAA games without millions on tap. Generally only corporations can produce that for you. Even CDPR got investors.. albeit not all corporate ones.. but ones with the same type of capitalist system in place.

It's gonna get worse probably too. More and more things are costing $50 million or more. Witcher cost $80 million. I'm sure DAI cost more.. going by EA trends.. but they'll probably write off some of that as research into Frostbite.

No, it's a rather...amusing story.  When I made the decision to go PS4, I pretty much told my best friend and room mate that, okay, Xbox is yours now.  So what does she do, she decides to trade it in, lol.  She's odd like that, still perfectly content with her Xbox 360 and the games she has for that.  I was okay with it because I really was not all that interested in Xbox's exclusives.  I mean there is Halo, Gears of War, and Dead Rising for me, and my interest in those are waning.

Even if I still had it though, I would still wait to get it now that I have made the switch.  Because of the achievements/trophies.  If I am gonna get it I want to get it for the system that I am more focused on, because I am really weird about achievements.  I care about them way more than I should, lol.

Most publishers aren't gamers. That is the main problem with the industry. Even CDRP has to get published, and it is probably with a few strings attached, but nothing as insane as EA or Ubisoft pushes on their in house studios. Still i guess we are lucky, we get to sit on a forum and argue over what games we like and why we didn't like one etc. When i was a youngling i only had a few games for my computer, now i have hundreds.

Ah.. too bad.

As for exclusives, I actually think their best one is Sunset Overdrive. And I don't see much talk about it :\

Sunset Overdrive. That is the Insomniac game right? Loved Ratchet and Clank, so wouldn't mind playing that.

Yeah. Funnily, a very Playstation like game in my mind. :P

But you can blame this on Sony themselves. Insomniac wanted to retain brand ownership or something, so MS helped instead. Sometimes that's why this happens.

On GOTY awards, they are little more than a component in the marketing machine of the gaming industry. And almost by definition a bad idea. Think DA:I kept its November release date purely out of some altruistic desire not to disappoint the players? Had it be released several months later, as it should've been (since the game was unplayable on keyboard -mouse at release -- one of many bug and polish issues) it would've had to compete with Witcher 3 and Fallout 4. Think DAI would've taken home many prizes in that case?

Speaking of the comparison in terms of what DAI can do better.... project management. 3.5 years in development for DAI vs. 2.5 for the Witcher 3. Lets assume they had comparable budgets (unless someone else's google-foo has those numbers handy). CDPR put out an arguably better product with more content in a shorter time, possibily on less money. This boils down to a project management issue. Clearly resources were not spent effectively nor were the proper aspects of the project prioritized correctly. Bottom line, they should seriously consider bringing in someone from the outside to lead both project management and perhaps even story development to avoid falling into similar pitfalls (though its probably already too late for DA4 and MEA).
