I'm seeing it tomorrow, but hope you have fun. I'm trying not to read reviews but from what I've heard it's better than the prequels but not as good as Episode 4 and 5.

 

That would be accurate.... if the writers had more respect for the lore.. it would have been much better... 

 

Rant: Star Wars Force Awaken Spoilers

WTF! Kylo Ren got his behind handed to him by a gal who is untrained in the force and as far as we know saber combat as well in literally both department.

 

No wonder Luke went into hiding. It must be shame. Not because his padawan turned to the dark side but because of how bad a teacher he has been. He knows that all hope to rebuild the Jedi died with his incompetence as a teacher. 

 

Even my 8 year old asked me... hey... how did she just close her eyes for 5 seconds and kick his butt??

 

Well... she must be the Force incarnate...

Movie was really really good. I give it a solid A and was better than any scifi movie/fantasy movie since lord of the rings

Like the new characters and while watching it you instantly see what was missing from prequels

The movie was very good and one that I think a lot of people will like. It makes me very excited for future Star Wars movies now, the wait for Episodes VIII and IX is going to be a long one...

Well, she knows how to fight, as demonstrated early on, and she's clearly force sensitive, which has probably factored into her development and skills all along, regardless of whether it had "awakened" in her. Besides, I kind of think that the idea of light sabers being particularly difficult to wield or requiring special training just to use them was an EU contrivance. There's no real reason for that to be the case. Luke can handle one well enough in episode 4, and I'm willing to bet he has less combat experience than Rey does. Hell, Finn does ok for himself too, and he's a damn janitor (albeit one with some amount of martial training, which likely included some sort of melee combat training).

And also, Ren was an awful whiny baby, so there's also that.

Not as long as you'd think. Disney is going to drown us in them, just as they've drowned us in disappointing marvel schlock. We'll have a new Star Wars film every 14 months once they get cranking. They've said as much.

There were a few things I liked about it a lot - I thought Rey and Finn were both great - but at the end of the day, it just seemed like a checklist. It had odd pacing and very little heart. I went into it indifferent to JJ Abrams, but really hoping this would change my mind about him. It definitely didn't. At least Benedict Cumberbatch wasn't in it, so thank goodness for small blessings.

I am sure Rey knows how to defend herself but to best a trained Jedi... albeit a whiny one but still... And his display of control over the force, like stopping a laser bolt in mid air early on only to get repelled by Rey... still a bit far fetch even is she is force sensitive and is most likely a Skywalker.

 

The lightsaber is not special but the Jedi training is somewhat special. Recall in Episode 4 when Luke was training with the lightsaber? Jedi relies on the force to guide them, to know when and where an attack is coming from by feeling the force (like repelling laser bolts). Surly Ren should be able to control that better than Rey and has more experience. No?

 

Oh yeah, Finn the janitor held his own, so does the Storm Trooper with the Baton. Which is why I concluded... Luke Skywalker is a lousy teacher and thus he is hiding in shame.

 

Thank God Ren is not Darth Kylo Ren... Palpatine, Vader, Dooku, Maul and all the Sith Lords before them would be spinning in their graves.

Or maybe that is Luke's master plan to stop the Sith once and for all. Sith Lords usually seduce and recruit young talented Jedi to become their disciples. If Ren is the best the Jedi has to offer to the Sith Lords, the universe is surly a safer place

Man though, I hope she's not a Skywalker, or this galaxy's gonna be just as absurdly small as the EU. I'm really, really hoping that she's just an extraordinarily force sensitive rando. But if Luke's lightsaber is talking to her, that probably means I'm gonna be disappointed.

Daisy Ridley (Rey) was in my opinion one of the breakout stars of the movie. Rey's a good character and I'm excited to see her future stories. I won't be surprised if the series is a little milked by Disney but it's Star Wars and I know I'm going to be excited for any future movie now.

I feel like JJ just went down a checklist of "Stuff that makes Star Wars" and didn't screw up, for the most part. The two leads were wonderful. But he just can't replicate the magic touch of George Lucas (as edited by Marcia Lucas, it's crucial to note).

JJ definitely went down that list and did a very good job at that... but by doing so he created a film that I constantly compare to New Hope as I was watching it. Oh, okay, this character should be the new Luke... this should be the new Palpatine, this should be the new Vader, this should be the new Obiwan, this should be the new Yoda, etc. 

 

That and the pacing. I think that the pacing is a little off. This universe feels like an awfully small place because it seems that people get around the galaxy very quickly or they had Mass Relays.

Tough one. Episode 4 and 5 are better, its even with episiode 6. I felt like it was a checklist movie to please the fans, but there is nothing wrong with starting with some fanservice and then build the new trilogy on a simple premise. I had alot of fun, was grinning like an idiot the entire movie. So the next one has to take a step up and show that Disney wants to do something new and great with it.

Ah ha. I was off by one. Colin Trevorrow, of Jurassic World, is slated for episode 9. I didn't see Looper, but I'm skeptical. And that's not even a knock against that director, per se. I'm skeptical of A) Disney (with their plans for the future) helming it, and B ) just the big budget film making climate these days. I hope I'm surprised.

I guess my position is that none of the other installments or iterations of Star Wars have captured the style as well as the original trilogy (because duh), or realized the potential of the setting as well as Bioware and Obsidian. I have four films and a million games and tie in comics and novels that seem intent on reinforcing that.

And I don't think Force Awakens was bad! It was what I expected, and barring a few really stupid aspects, it was good. Just not what I was hoping for.

The way they do romance is pretty organic and tie to the plot. I also like how they handle cheating though. Most Bioware games, there is no consequence for flirting and sleeping around or they just block out the possibility. They give consequence to you trying to flirt with both in this game.
