As I recall, those were the days with constant assault of the Devs's; not simply a bad day. I was a bit surprised the forums were not closed then like the OT removal recently. Plus there were death threats to her family. Who needs that?

We can agree on this.

George Lucas made Star Wars and George Lucas destroyed Star Wars.

Yes, I am aware that David Gaider was the lead writer for DA:O but that does not mean he is still great. The atmosphere, the dark believable and deadly politics are  all but gone.

DA:O started the story and it was a great start. It is like great shows and movies that started out great only to crumbled soon after because the writer did not have a plan or a path and improvises along the way.

Think of Gaider as George Lucas. He had his moment, now he needs to go before he ultimately create a Jar Jar Binks.

That's why one of the reasons I love Brandon Sanderson, dude plans his stuff soooo far in advance.

As i remember it she got alot of fan hate for Dragon Age II, also some controversial statement that she wish skipping gameplay was an option for people just interested in the story. Which i don't have a problem with aslong as it doesn't mean less effort is put into gameplay. And for that she got death threats and feared for her life. Fanbase!

She got death threats for that?  Holy crap I hate stupid people.  This is why we can't have nice things.

I've only read Mistborn. He's pretty cool. I'm down for any criminals-in-fantasy story. It has cool magic, but there's a bit of a mundane heist story to it too.

Have you read all the Mistborn books?  There's five of the now, with another coming out in a couple of weeks.  In the newer ones he actually moves the world ahead a few centuries and so you get magic in a sort of old west style world.  It's really cool, and his sense of humor just keeps getting better.

His best work though is the Stormlight Archive though, those are truly magnificent, in my mind, with more of his really cool magic systems in it, and one of the most unique worlds I have ever read.  Even better, some of the worlds that he writes about are interconnected.

Sorry, way off topic, but it doesn't take me much to gush about Brandon Sanderson.  :P

She was a writer who was primarily concerned with writing (and she was great, if you ask me). That was the controversy. Makes me wonder if the same folks would lose their damn minds if it came to light that every concept artist or composer who worked on a game didn't also play them.

It's infuriating because to this day, people reference her stories and scenarios (Deep Roads in DAO plus most Dwarven lore development, Anders, the Smuggler in SWTOR, to point out a few) as some of their favorite and most memorable.

As ever, the main takeaway is that gamers are awful.

No.. I didn't even know they were out. I read a box set with 3, I think.

I'll check out Stormlight too.

Actually, I told Akabara (sp?) about Locke Lamora in this thread before. That's a fairly recent, cool series too. It doesn't have the intricate magic system, but the characters and criminality are similar in some way.

People like Cass too, and she set the groundwork there. Gaider picked her back up after she left in the middle of DAI.

One dud to me is Sebastian. But he isn't too bad. He provides a decent counterpart to some quests/characters.

I only recently realised in Witcher 3 how much interesting texts and lore you find even from the map if you just for example read the roadsign descriptions of the places they represent:

witcher3-faustkampf-velen2.jpg

It is small details like this that sets the Witcher games truly apart from almost every other game out there. Even Witcher 1 was done in such detail and beliavable world it was near stunning. Especially when it was done with such a aged game engine.

You can tell the people in CD Project really enjoy doing their games and not purely doing it with dollar signs as eyes.

To be honest, I don't see DA series have a clear trajectory of its story arc to begin with. DA2 feels like a last minute brainstorm story elements to fit in "awesome button" game play while DAI's story is all about expanding open world. TW3 delivers a much more cohesive story through the trilogy.

I contend that it doesn't necessarily need one. It's not trying to tell a cohesive story in multiple parts. Each game thus far is a self-contained narrative in a different time/place that further uncovers the mysteries of the setting. Which I think works.

Not saying that it's better than a strongly authored continuing narrative - just saying it's different, and things are allowed to be different.

You shouldn't stay hung up on the awesome button thing, either. It was a marketing person talking marketing, and it was debunked as soon as it tumbled out of the dude's mouth. It's obviously not true to anyone who's played the game (unless I'm imagining all the people here bemoaning DAI's lack of DA2 advanced (far moreso than DAO's) tactics).

I don't know if it's better than DAO, but some skill sets made it seem that way. Like setting up Anders to switch between Panacea and Vengeance modes. I think I managed to get Sebastian's chain buildup working too. They should have had some prebuilt ones though.. Not all people want to bother with this.

Yeah, I would love to see a game that manages to pull off good character progression with a character that should already be a badass.  It would be challenging I'm sure but surely there has to be a way.

I'll grant that TW2 and TW3 do this well compared to other games seeing as you start with all your abilities and most of the skill ups you receive are passive, so most options are open to you from the beginning. That's nice.

I think maybe it would have helped more to start with better equipment and a greater complement of formulae rather than just like, two of them, and let the upgrades or exceptionally rare ones be the ones that are lootable or purchasable. And let it make sense. If only witchers can safely ingest witcher potions, and there are hardly any witchers around these days, why does every second vendor stock a full range of witcher formulae?

Likewise, if I'm a career swordsman, don't let me loot a clear upgrade from some level derp goon in his underwear, even if it's the beginning of the game.

Hmmm; that data seems to be somewhat restricted in time, as another is given credit for starting the thread.

Starting with all basic abilities only work in an action game though :P

As for Witcher formulas, the reason it is widely sold is because only Witcher's can take them safely. Tis the perfect poison. According to Geralt, if you want to cause someone enough pain that it will make them scream so hard that an entire village will hear them? Feed them Swallow.

I am sure Radovid would love to feed Philipa all sorts of Witcher potions

I'd like to see him try without catching fire.

As for abilites, I think it could have worked in DAI too. At least in the case of a mage Trevelyan, you're a potential candidate for first enchanter, so they could start you off with more than two offensive spells. Make them base level, sure, but at least give us the illusion of knowledge and competence.

TW3's not even included in the audio category?

QzrIDm0nRoOFeEczv9hG_Asian%20Casual%20Fl

Amazes me the soundtrack got so little attention. I just got to Ciri last night on my replay. That scene wrecks me every time. That they could make the whole thing a Snow White reference and still keep the gravitas is quite the feat.

This may be audio FX; not soundtrack, though I am uncertain of such details.

It did, it was nominated at The Video game awards, wasn't it?

The soundtrack in eastern Velen is one of the loveliest things I've ever heard in a game, ditto for much of the Skellige music. The way it converges with the gameplay is sublime and beautiful.

Yeah, that's a bit of an oversight.
