The failed dice is main feature for X-com series, some times a pintpointed shotgun shoot could miss but a mile away missile could hit the target. Just ROLL THE DICE! :)

So... I decided to give XCOM a try... move right next to an enemy, his face about 12 inches away from my shotgun, his side to some cover and I have a 40% chance of hitting it!?!? OMG - how on earth is this possible!!

No wonder humanity lost the war against the alien invaders! They are recruiting blind soldiers!!!

If you have access to the Second Wave options, adding Cinematics adds a little better chance of hitting the target; like having a better scope bonus. And other options can also improve the standards for recruitment.

No idea what 2nd wave is... this be my 1st experience with XCOM... 2 hours into the game and I still have not found the praised "strategic aspect" of the game. Chance and RNG is dominating my experience

As squadies get promoted, their stats also increase. And until you get some Player experience, grenades and explosives may be more desirable for solutions, though you lose some loot.

There is little more frustrating than missing several shots in a row; nor nothing much funnier when watching another Player stream it.

This is a really important thing to appreciate about the strategy games like XCOM. Part of the fun is (supposed to be) the overlap of clever use of stats to get your numbers as high as possible. To make that work the basic moves - a single solider without buffs at point blank - have to be nerfed to make the payoff on buffs and gaming the system worth it and also to still give gamers who are good at that sort of thing challenge.

Getting good at these games is about failing. Often. One you get that design premise it makes a lot more sense.

Another part that I like on Normal difficulty; both the soldiers and the aliens seem to be on even footing. If one side improves their aim via skills, the other side has the same options.

Try to shoot from higher position or flanking enemy with at least 2 operatives or use grenade to "debunk" enemy in cover. My best late game move is use 2 snipers set up crossing "kill zones" then use ranger lure all sorts aliens into them. Risk and reward are two eternal elements in any conflict. Great commander use strategy and tactics to maximize reward while minimize risks. But he/she could not control every shot from each soldier.

Yep. That's the biggest draw for me. For all its simplicity (and accusations of "dumbing down"), Skyrim is the most playable and least annoying Beth leveling system.

I don't follow the project closely, but I do hope that they're not looking to add complete VO to every quest and NPC, though. They might be. I think it would be a waste of time, considering the original game doesn't have it, and I don't think this one needs it, but who knows?

I agree.  Everytime I played Morrowind or Oblivion, I could never stop myself from trying to get every skill and every stat as maxed as possible.  To the point where I would keep track of every skill that leveled up, so that I know which stats would get bonuses the next time my character leveled.  Then I would only use skills that leveled up those stats.  And of course, every time something like acrobatics leveled up that I couldn't control, I would be in the middle of leveling something else up so I would have to stop using those abilities.

It was aggravating to me, but I COULD...NOT...STOP...  :P

RE: XCOM 2

The good news is that Snipers do not have to switch weapons after movement; the game does this automatically. The bad news is that they cannot re-load and fire their main weapon like the other classes, at least in the lower levels.

The good news is the game can look fairly wondermous; the bad news is that until a patch is made, higher setting may slow the game to a stuttering crawl.

Thus far, I would give the game 4/5; negatives for requiring Steam to play and other negatives like those mentioned here.

And to keep somewhat on topic, it would be great if other games allowed for such tactical play.

In mostly unrelated but neato news, Gaider joined Beamdog. That's... kinda cool. Might be they're actually working on Baldur's Gate 3?

I hope so, they want to do BG III, atleast according with a few interviews i've seen with them. Brent Knowles and Gaider together on Baldurs Gate 3 could be something special.

 4/5? Wait till you get hit by corrupted save bug. 5 out of 9 of my save files are corrupted and loading them results in a CTD. In the forums, it is reported that it is a known issue in a specific mission but I am not doing that mission. Guess this problem is not limited to just that mission.

Now I would give it a 2/5 until this issue is fixed - then I will give it a 3/5 having this issue at all. Save game corruption is the worst of all bugs. It is worse than the game crashing constantly

Before encountering this bug, I too would give it a 4/5. I would recommend it to anyone who like luck base strategy game. People who like chess type strategy game will find this game on the frustrating side.

Performance... disable anti-aliasing appears to help quite a bit - not much if your PC is barely meeting minimum requirements though. XCOM 2 is not optimize.

Well that was a bit... unexpected. Not sure if I should be happy or sad about it. Not a fan of his but he does have potential. Obviously it means that Beamdog has other work planned besides Siege of Dragonspear, which is good, there aren't that many developers focusing on games of that kind, but I'd rather have Gaider somewhere where he can't do as much (potential) harm. Then again I'm all for second chances. And who knows, he might actually bloom when freed from the shackles of his evil EA overlords.

Well he did actually do writing on Baldurs Gate II back in the day, and with his experience in building Thedas he is the perfect fit for Beamdog and what they are trying to achieve. He actually got a Creative Director posistion, and he reached out. Wonder if he wanted a new challenge, was just tired of Bioware or it just sucks to work there, curious.

Yeah, that's what worries me. His experience in building Thedas into the "thing" it currently is, and the position of Creative Director that he got. As an individual writer, one of many with peers, he would be ok. The fact that he is the CREATIVE DIRECTOR makes my skin crawl.

Yeah he is an aquired taste, and alot of people don't like the Thedas setting anymore after DA:II and Inquisition. What i would keep in mind though is that he works under Brent Knowles. The lead designer/Creative director on BGII and DA:O. I think they will make an excellent team once again, like they did with DA:O.

Say what you will about the overarching direction of DA (which I didn't find ideal either, though Trespasser ameliorates it somewhat), he remains one of the great character writers and world builders in the industry - one of the best, I think.

I'm excited to see what he does there.

Maybe it was just a money/career decision. Creative Director sounds like it should be step or two higher in the corporate ladder than Lead Writer at least.

Had my first couple of crashes in XCOM 2 today, but the saves are seemingly fine.

And for those looking at bugs, believe I may have found a small one: my Gunner using Dragon rounds was able to one-shot my first Sectopod. I was on my third or fourth attempt for this encounter, when I chose to have the lightweights Hunker down until the Gunner could shred him first. Well, he dood it!

:D

how about no.

never read through the thread but just no.

dont get me wrong, witcher 3 is a fantastic game but DA should just stay DA and not be a mindless copy of something.

tried to be 'open-world' like the skyrim series and got blasted like mad.

so just no.

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B

I would think that if anything it's a step down, money wise. Even with a title upgrade, could Beamdog pay more than EA?

Yeah, for characters he's great. And hopefully combined with Brent Knowles and Avellone they'll pool their strengths and make something great.
