The latest Tomb Raider is Awesome, but you know who deserves credit? The gameplay and level designers. The animators. The people that created the INSANE lighting engine for that game. I feel bad for Pratchett, because she has to know the entire game doesn't measure up to a single side quest in Witcher 3.

Seriously? Not looking down on Rise of the Tomb Raider, it is a good game, but it is not better written then The Witcher 3 and Pillars of Eternity. Even Fallout 4 has better writing.

Yeah, I would not mind one bit if PoE won. Really well written game! I guess it was too much reading for the writer's guild :/

Awww, lamesauce.

I don't know who those guys are, but I searched for previous winners and this is what I found:
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed ( I don't remember much about it, not sure if I played it)
Uncharted 2 (didn't play it)
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (okay story)
Uncharted 3 (didn't play it)
Assassin's Creed III: Liberation (didn't play it)
The Last Of Us (didn't play it)
The Last Of Us : expansion (nope)
Rise Of The Tomb Raider (didn't play it)

They don't seem to favor RPGs. I think the PC Gamer article you linked and its comment section sums up my opinion.

Lol. Buffalotech, lazygamer, and a few others has some salty write ups about Tomb Raider winning over W3.

I say "let it go". Share the love. The award is inconsequencial anyway because it was not voted by gamers.

To gamers the award maybe inconsequential. To a game writer the award is not inconsequential.

True but, they should probably write better stuff then, because not one of the outlets even mentioned Tomb Raider on the story side. Not one. Plenty of mention of the small indie games like LiS and Undertale etc., but not one RoTR.

As I said, it does not matter. These people aren't in the gaming business and probably never even played those games and only had small skripts. If W3 has to loose this category, it should have been with PoE. I say this as someone who has played RoTR, PoE and TW3. I haven't finished RoTR on pc but I'm close, and so far, nothing yet that blew me away narrative-wise but the gameplay was superb and I'm loving it.

Second it. I enjoyed every second in Rise of TR but not for its story which is good but not exceptional. As for TW3, bloody baron is the peak but the HOS story of Olgierd is so well written and presented in the game. It is ludicrous to even consider RTR  with better story when HOS was released in the same year.

It boils down to opinion. In their opinion Tomb Raider was better written. Whether one agrees or disagrees with that point is a different matter. It is their award and they decide who to give it to. Much like any award.

It also appears that someone in the Guild plays the games for them to know that the stories even exist.

So, someone leaked a crap ton of info about the next expansion. Because I'm a gossip, here you all go:

-Recommended lvl is 40. Can be played before or after main game.

-Has a 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' vibe.

-3 endings.

-New boss fights.

-New weapon: a bone sword.

-release is expected in June.

-New merchants can change armor colors. Some gear from TW2 making a return.

-4 new skills in each tree. 12 new skills in the general tree. New slots for mutagens.

-Trophy bonuses made more meaningful. Overall combat rebalancing.

-Each Witcher set gets alt upgrade.

-Map is about 75% of Velen/Novigrad hub in size.

-New additions to Gwent.

-New sword play animations and new boxing animations.

-New sign: Heliotrope is coming back.

-Graphics and lighting are improved in the new area, but not the base game. :(

-Photo mode is coming. New camera settings for FOV...and first person view??

This is unconfirmed info at this point so don't shoot me if it ends up being BS. :)

Yea sadly it seems the person that posted these informations revealed he kinda trolled

It also comes down to different expectations from different games. As wonderful as TW3 is, it's a gigantic RPG, and the story meanders over 100+ hours for many gamers (who even then may not get the full picture). RotTR is, so far, tight and very entertaining (I'm really getting some welcome Indiana Jones vibes from it). It tells a compact, cohesive story, and in many ways so far is just as well executed as TW3, at least in terms of the main storyline (and adjusting my criteria for what is a very different experience). It's certainly not apparent to me that it's inferior to any any given sidequest in TW3, because there are so many of them that are mundane and a little forgettable. That's not an indictment of the quality and care taken in adding stories to every sidequest, so much as recognizing that for the most part, those don't hit the highest notes in the game.

(And I still think a lot of things in there are more better than the Baron arc, which remains the least interesting part of the game. I mean really, over Olgierd and HoS? Nah, come on.)

Rise is real good, though. And what a beautiful game!

Witcher, Skyrim, and Dragon Age are three different franchises.

Why would you want Star Trek to be Star Wars and Star Wars to be Star Trek? Since they are two distinctly different franchises, Dragon Age and Witcher should feel distinctively different.

If you want to play the Witcher, the only logical solution is to play the Witcher.

Why do we need all of our games to feel and look the same?

Should we genetically alter everyone's genes, so only blonde hair and blue eyed people exist?

How about the idea of making Dragon Age 4 feel more like Dragon Age: Origins? Since Dragon Age: Origins is the reason why the franchise exists, the only logical solution is to maintain the bloody brand.

You missed the mark on the point of this thread miles away. But I give you points for going back to Origins roots ☺

If a lot of this is true than the DLC sounds amazing, I still need to finish Hearts of Stone but definitely looking forward to Blood and Wine.

I will not be able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider till it comes out on PS4, but I have a hard time imagining that it will compare to TW3 in terms of writing or story.  Simply because TW3 does things in terms of storytelling I haven't seen any other game do.  Like the way they tell a story behind a story over the course of several different quests.

Suppose I could be wrong and I change my mind once I play it, one never knows.

It does nothing original nor does it push boundaries in a narrative sense. It's passable, and borrows heavily from familiar movie scripts. There is one plot twist I didn't see coming that was nice. The villain is more interesting this time around too. But when it comes to narrative design, your average RPG is ten times more ambitious.

The less Bioware tries to be like CDPR, the better.

Can't go any worse than the time they tried to be Bethesda.

I personally think trying to be like other games is what's pulling this franchise in so many directions.

DA2 started being designed after ME2's massive popularity, so they tried to make it "Mass Effect with swords." Look how well that turned out.

DAI started being designed after Skyrim's massive popularity, so they tried to make it "Skyrim with Qunari." While it's a way bigger critical and financial success than DA2, the huge empty open worlds with dozens of meaningless fetch quests are one of the less celebrated parts of this game. (While the parts that hearken back to its Origin roots seem to be better received.)

I personally think BioWare should stop trying to copy what the most popular game's doing and just focus on making Dragon Age games good on their own merit.

If by creating a GOTY, then perhaps they will do it again.

Speaking about goty. There is a interesting poll going on on gamefaqs.com about which game was the most worthy overall Goty winner in their respective year.

strongestgoty.jpg

http://www.gamefaqs....373-pc/73304663

Of course it's only a small sample size and in no way representative but from my experience outside of this forum it catches the general opinion about the game. It's also interesting because it was done on a neutral gaming forum.

The consensus seems to be either that the game didn't deserve it's goty awards at all or that it only won so many because it had a very weak competition and there wasn't a single outstanding game in 2014.

Didn't The Last of Us got 249 awards and not 24?

Also thats an interesting poll result considering gamefaq is pretty much a witcher -hating-bloodborne-loving site.

Yes it did. It's a typing error. It's written correctly below.

"The last of Us won the most goty awards in absolute numbers (249 out of 529)

Very scientific, and is certainly without bias.

Pls do not be offended if I do not use this poll or hold your experience as a standard for all or most gamers. And if TW3 wins this years award, pls note that it will be handed to them by last years winners from Bioware.
