Skyrim is also much older. TW3 10 mil is not even 1 yr old.

True; it took Skyrim a little over two years to reach that mark, I believe (announcements made in Jan 2014; launched in Nov 2011).

Skyrim is gonna keep chugging along too. I think the only (and the most) disappointing thing about TW3 is the absence of a full-featured content editor. TW3 is as first-rate as they come, but it's so long, and I think its length inhibits replay value somewhat (and there aren't very many branches or lengthy optional questlines, so you can't build a little non-main quest concept playthrough around them like you can with the guild questlines in TES). Although I guess they might still release it at the end of everything.

With Skyrim's basic design and the breadth of its mod support, you can drop into the game for a short, highly changeable experience whenever the mood strikes (I just started a new vampire PC/Dark Brotherhood playthrough this past weekend. Planning a Bosmer playthrough around several survivalist mods as well).

Shipped is not sold. Shipped is just the volume of units moved to retailers. Doesn't mean the copies sold. The previously linked article lists sales at 6 million. A resounding success - especially when you consider the gains on currency alone (in the Euro and various dollar denominations) - but not the same as sold.

Edit:

That tile is confusing, because the actual quote is that it sold 10 million copies. So the title actually undercuts itself. And the previous article gives the correct sales numbers for the Witcher series as a whole - 20 million - but then ascribes 6 million to TW3, when the source that gives us the 20 million number for the series give us 10 for TW3.

This is just strange.

Like you said, the actual quote by CDPR CEO Adam Kicinski is :“In these 20 million units sold, The Witcher 3 constitutes almost 10 million". I don't know why Gamespot and other websites say "shipped".

Unlike With Skyrim I'm stoked to see what sort of impact this ends up having on the RPG genre, since I'm a fan of games with a strong focus on characters and story. The Bethesda model of having the game world and exploration being the primary focus, with a blank slate protagonist and side characters that are an afterthought, doesn't interest me at all. I also think Skyrim's success had a role in some of the bad design decisions made with DA:I.

It's not just that characters are an afterthought - quests are generally an afterthought and this awful idea of story content by way of archeology and diary reading is fundamental.

I just don't see it. To me Skyrim is very static - I can pretty much play all of the content in one sitting, there is no real reactivity to what I do beyond some GTA level terror at a murder spree, and all of the quest lines generally resolve with limited choice.

While there are examples that the environment does not react to change or choice, there are plenty of examples that it does:

* Guards, children, and other NPC's observe what spells and skills are being utilized by the DB.

* NPC's can thank the DB from saving them from Dragons, Alduin, vampires, etc.

* Wearing various materials can glean a reaction for others, as well as the fighting weapons one may choose.

* Some NPC's may tire of being misused or dying while in your service (eg; J'Zhargo).

* Criminal activity appears to be well monitored.

The list can go on. Sure Skyrim ain't perfect, and romance and story take a back seat to Bioware games, IMO. But for a single player experience that one may tailor to their whims, it is top notch.

I'd be a liar if I said it wasn't 80% headcanon (not to mention largely dependent on the terrific modding community to tighten up the core systems and unlock the potential there). It's heavily reliant on both of those things, although the vanilla experience in any of the games is still generally enough for me to run with for a very, very long time. I've always really enjoyed the lore and setting, too.

The thing about Bethesda's games generally - and Skyrim particularly, as I've had a soft spot for the nords since Daggerfall - is that they end up providing an exceptional canvas for me to go off and play with. The blank slate protagonists and the open skill systems let me come up with a huge variety of different characters, many of which don't necessarily last a very long time. I don't play and replay the main questline, but I generally get a kick out of one-off, single concept playthroughs (some of which are just open-ended, like a survivalist playthrough). I won't deny that it gets repetitive if I'm just playing the game, but for me, Skyrim generally ends up offering emergent storytelling that's mostly in my head and only barely based in the game. Not many other games let me do that to the same extent, and I'm happy to overlook some shortcomings in the ones that do (and of course, Bethesda games have plenty of those).

I just wish Fallout 4 offered a little more of that freedom. We need a "Commonwealth Unbound" mod like yesterday.

I treated all of the previous TES games as basically GTA. I've never really been into them, as far as RPGS go. I liked the sandboxy stuff more.

I would say I took Skyrim a little more seriously... stalking and slowly examining dungeon. It could be that I played with more Rogue skills.

I finally beat Hearts of Stone the other day and I really liked it, especially the quest variety with the wedding, the auction house heist, and then the last two quests. Makes me really excited for Blood and Wine now.

Where did you get that pic from?

Also, I wondered if everyone in Red's eyes are popping out from the pressure of making Cyberpunk now that TW3 has dethroned TLOU. I hope they can stay cool under it.

Also just read Andromeda is not coming this year, and I just died inside

Not by much really, it's still being released by March 2017

Considering ME3 came out in March I'm kind of expecting Andromeda to come out around that time too. It would be EA's big spring game.

TW3 is now the most awarded game of all time with currently 251 awards - previous record was held by The Last of Us with 249.

Wow.

EDIT: Also, oops. Xety was way faster than me.

He brings up some good points but he's not very concise in his explanation. My initial impressions of the open world in TW3 have been rethought extensively since playing it more like, well, an open world, with all map icons turned off and randomly exploring. While I still feel they could have done underground levels better, the pacing and variety is superb. For better or worse, I think this is the true strength of the game - its open world design.

A short leaked footage of B&W. The style is quite different from the main game and reminds me a lot with Warhammer fantasy.

The new equivalent for Bethesda's horse armor!

Sad thing is that I would probably buy any kind of DLC for Witcher 3 at this point. Blood and Wine cant come soon enough!

At least the paid DLC released so far has been of high quality, the rest they've given us, so that's cool.

Just wish I could understand what the bloke at the end is saying. I'd probably buy a talking Roach DLC though. LOL

CDPR is just trolling, like our gamers do.
