Considering we barely got to see any of the real Orlais in any meaningful sense, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I remember being so excited to see Orlais. I was left wanting.

Believe that may have been the point. As it has been so hyped, it was left to the imagination with the notable exceptions presented.

And again, Orlais is rather unique; not just another French cultural replica.

If it was a point they had in mind, it was a bad one, imo. Orlais isn't unique. That was my issue. It should have felt unique, but it felt like a page, instead of a chapter. Not everything should be head-canoned in or left to the imagination. Orlais was a huge part of the game and felt like a cheap after thought. I found that disappointing.

It would have been nice to feel immersed in this culture that we have heard so much about. Instead, everyone spoke english and they gave us a mask we couldn't even use in a ball where everyone had one. It felt bland and it shouldn't.

This is my opinion, though. As you know, already. I haven't been gone so long that you wouldn't remember, have I?

EDIT: Also, I just want to point out that even occupying Nilfgaardian's use their own language in TW3. If you happen upon their camps, they will be having conversations in their language, but when seeing you, they speak in english, but with their accent. Sometimes when fighting you, they'll also spit curses at you in their language. That is what I wanted. It made you feel like they were actually from another land, foreign and different. It would have been nice to hear some Orlaisian(did I use the right term? If not, please feel free to correct me) that wasn't part of a song that was sung by someone not from Orlais.

No, it is unique, masks and all. The whole 'Show and Don't Tell' thing does not jive with what has been given. And one does not require an entire city to be immersed into a culture of that country; the prior games are more than evidence of this. And if fictional languages are your thing, see Elvish, Dwarven, and Qunari for this; not a neighboring country that has spent so much time together.

No, a whole city isn't required. However, if you're going to delegate your "country" in small form, make the culture alive. The market area was so small it was a joke.

To suggest that a foreign country shouldn't have their own language because they neighbor with an english speaking country is hilarious. You go to the heart of Orlais, the palace itself and not one single person is speaking in their native tongue. Not one. It also isn't far to reach expecting a foreign country to speak\have their own language when lore presents it that way. Wanting those nuances is not exclusive to fantasy races. What a ridiculous notion. Orlais is a fantasy country with it's own language--expecting to hear someone...anyone speak said language while in the country isn't too much to ask, expect or want.

I see some things haven't changed. You're still telling people how their opinion is wrong and whatever your is right. It's great that you're completely satisfied with Orlais. I am glad they made it appealing for you. It fell short for me and what I had hoped for. In my opinion it felt empty and without any charm and atmosphere.

I think when it comes to cities like Orlais not being all they could have been - I think some of us would just about cry if we knew the things that had to be cut or trimmed down so as they could get the game running on the old consoles. We know they had to alter things so they could get the game working on those systems.

And after all that they ditched those customers half way through anyway.

And you still assume.

The marketplace is small; purposely. It was done to indicate that the Inquisition was restricted as to where they could travel within the capital, I believe. And while this is small, The Lion, Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves and other Orlesian areas certainly are not.

And I do not require an unknown language to indicate that the Orlesians are different; accents anyone? Yet I cannot recall if Orlesian expressions were used or not; do not notice, yet am able to tell they are foreign to those from Ferelden. NO head canon required.

And all of us are entitled to an opinion, but it is better to leave the facts unaltered in forming one.

I agree that Inquisitions cross generational development had everything to do with Orlais pocket sized conception. Bring on the 31st!

My opinions are based around facts.

I stated the marketplace was small. It is.

I stated that no one in Orlais actually spoke in their native tongue. They don't.

I stated that they give you a mask at a ball, yet don't allow you to wear it. They don't.

You are the one proposing your reason as fact. You're the one who is stating that the marketplace was made small because of reasons. They didn't implement language because of reasons. They made Orlais small because of reasons. Do you have any proof that they did all of that for the reasons you stated? Quotes, links, etc? Or are you altering facts to form your opinion?

Furthermore, it makes no difference what reasons Bioware gave or you made up because it doesn't alter the outcome. If I state, "You can't wear the mask they give you at the ball." and they gave me ten reasons why they couldn't do it, it doesn't change the fact that they gave you a mask that you couldn't wear at the ball. The fact is still a fact.

The marketplace is small; the areas shown in the remaining country are not.

Orlesians may or may not speak native language, but the bard you noted earlier does.

Masks are given afterwards, though the option is given to hide them. Have no idea of the ball itself; too busy doing quests.

My opinions are based in fact, too; simply prefer to place them in context and not omit others.

And since it makes no differences if there are explanations, none are required. Facts are still facts.

The best one is the troll singing the song about eating the soldiers that fell off their horses. That one killed.

I remember being so excited to see Orlais. I was left wanting.

I was pretty satisfied with provincial Orlais, for what it's worth. The zones Elhanan mentions are lovely, especially the Emerald Graves and Emprise du Lion.

I was disappointed with VR. It's been built up in past games and the surrounding lore so much. The prospect of actually seeing it in a game with the tech to do it justice was so enticing. And I just like exploring urban areas. If I recall, the very thing that made me decide that yeah, I did want to play TW3 was a panning gif of Novigrad, showing off its size.

Lest some forget, I do not like cities anyway.

Haven't forgotten, but can't imagine why. They're so vital.

I don't know how Toussaint is depicted in the books exactly, but the picture I'm getting from B&W suggests to me that CDPR's vision will be very much inspired by (and will possibly be an answer to) Bioware's Orlais. I think it's gonna be really interesting to see.

I'm kind of surprised he still talks about the Witcher.... when he doesn't even play it.

I pointed this out like hundreds of pages ago. And he's still doing it.

Seriously, dude. What's wrong with you?

Hell, I LIKE the game and you barely see me here.

Having liveliness; Yes, but certainly not necessary. If I want to feel daunting overpopulation, I can go grocery shopping; for relaxation, I play games.

Like it or not, cities are part of our societies at least since the Bronze age and are therefore key for cultural representation (an aspect of it at least). When developers want to communicate their fictional culture in a nation, cities are a key aspect.
