I got the depressing ending, in which everybody died and Regis had to flee. Of course I'm going to replay the last part to get a better canon ending. No way my Geralt will settle down in a Toussaint not ruled by Anna Henrietta.
As for the four main characters:
Anna Henrietta: Really cool (and hot, especially her accent and the way she talks) character. Slightly different than in the books (I imagined her to be a bit more "crazy", yet everything she did in the game was pretty reasonable). Tbh I felt a bit in love with her and was pretty depressed after Syanna killed her.
Regis: CDP completely nailed his character. He is one of the very few 100% good-natured characters in the Witcher world and just like in the books he suffered because of this in the end. He died in the books to help Geralt to save Ciri- a person he never met- and again sacrificed his well-being for another person. Though this time it was someone who was close to him, what made the ending (him being forced to kill Dettlaff) even more tragical. But at least he had "just" to flee this time. Yet it is still sad and somehow characteristic for the witcher world that Regis- who was the only one of the four, who didn't do anything wrong- had the least chance to get a happy ending.
Dettlaff: I felt really sorry for him, despite him being responsible for the death of several dozens of people. Regis described him pretty well. He was a very powerful, but also naive person, who was tricked over and over again.Dettlaff didn't know the concept of deceit and the manipulative nature of humans, because he never really lived in the human world. He spent his time with lesser vampires and after meeting and falling in love with Syanna, he got drown into a world, which was foreign to him. Geralt said at the beginning of their fight to Dettlaff "I didn't want any of this to happen", which was exactly how I felt. Really great writing from CDP and an interesting and so far unique kind of "villain" in the witcher series.
Syanna: Imo the weakest of the four characters, but still ok. Maybe she didn't have such a big impact on me because she was more or less a copy of Renfri, a woman from one of the short stories in the witcher novels. The (assumed) curse of the black sun, a princess who was expelled because of it and seeked revenge afterwards. I still liked her though and could understand her motives and at least partly also her actions. Furthermore I enjoyed the time with her in the fairy-tale world, but would have prefered her dying instead of Dettlaff if it didn't mean that Geralt ends up in jail and stops being welcome in Toussaint. (I wanted to make my Geralt retire in his vineyard)
The story was great, not Hearts of Stone great (nothing beats Gaunter O'Dim) but far better than the main story of the base game.
The sidequests were excellent as always and the new gameplay mechanics a nice addition. Though half of the new mutations make Geralt completely overpowered, but it's the end anyway, so who cares.
The new monsters were great, especially the fights against Bruxas (and their design) were fantastic, though it was a bit disappointing that Alp's were basically red-haired Bruxas.
All in all.that's how you make an addon. It took me 40 hours to complete everything on Death March and I paid 18€ for it. I honestly felt like I'm robbing CD Project.
I'm sad that it's over now but with Wild Hunt+ Hearts of Stone+ Blood&Wine CDP created an 200+ hours masterpiece that every upcoming rpg has to beat and that will be very difficult for every developer. To be honest, I believe if anything can achieve the quality of Witcher 3 it can be only Cyberpunk 2077, yet no matter how good it will be,it won't have the same impact on me, even though I prefer a cyberpunk over a fantasy setting. The Witcher is something really unique considering it's one big story (even if not officially canon) of 8 books and 3 long games. I believe that they did the absolute right think to let the plot of the games start right after the books and create one huge adventure. In a few years I will reread all books and replay all games and will experience that 1000+ hours masterpiece of books and games again.
Now I'm going to replay the addon one more time. Then the waiting time for Cyberpunk will start. Still looking forward to Mass Effect though (in the end it's still my second favourite franchise) but after Mass Effect 3 and especially Dragon Age Inqusition my expectations are close to zero. Maybe that's a good thing though.
