I never said that consoles shouldn't have access to mods. I actually think the idea is pretty cool if thought out well enough and it was definitely something I would have loved before I got into using a PC. However I'm not so sure bethesda ever handled it well to be honest. Mods are made by people with PC's who do it simply because they enjoy it and I would hate for a lot of them to get angry enough to up and quit mod making altogether....because then no one will have mods, or at least miss out on some really good talent. I'm not saying I have all the answers either, so I'm not exactly sure what should be done to stop all the stealing going on but from a lot of angry mod maker's I've spoken to, they feel like bethesda is not doing enough. I know I've certainly been seeing a lot of cool mods being taken down lately in protest.

Also steam was a fiasco and it was clearly a cash grab to rip off a lot of the mod authors and while I preferably don't mind this experiment being done with new games like fallout 4, I hate when it's eating into games like skyrim that have been out for years and have already established a big modding community; it takes years to make all those mods to where it is now and it could be a lot of hard work thrown under the bus.

That's just my two cents but  I'm pretty pessimistic though. Sometimes I feel like consoles hold back PC gaming lately, kind of like how the 360 held back inquisition but that's just me being salty I guess.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from. I would hate for people who worked so very hard on mods to have to stop making them or hiding them because people are stealing them or being irresponsible for them. That being said, I am a console player and the mods for Fallout 4 sure have been nice and I appreciate every modder who made it possible for me to play them. I don't think consoles are the problem, I think developers are the problem for the most part, if you're speaking of graphics and performance. Some developers release upgrade packs for PC, which I am behind completely. Though, I could be biased. :P

Anyway, thanks for clarifying what you meant. :)

Yeah, no problem and I definitely don't think that consoles are the cause of the problem because they get dumped on as well. I should have worded it differently because I am in complete agreement with you that it's the developers. They just get greedy for cash and instead of making a great experience for all they decide to cut corners. I just sit wondering what the solution might be but instead I think I'll just leave that for the more intelligent minds to solve.

I'm glad you got to experience mods though, they can keep the gaming experience alive for years. My brother didn't see what the big deal with them was at first and now he says he wouldn't want to play without them.

The Gwent trailer was sweet.

But that "For Honor" presentation made me sweat. Can't wait for the beta to show up.

OMG OMG OMG!

Stand alone GWENT is happening. Farewell Hearthstone.

Lol at that Roach card! It'd be cool if it's the end product.

I am glad people enjoy Gwent, but I sure wish that they would have brought back Dice Poker.

I never liked dice poker. Too much reliance on luck. Gwent actually involves a degree of skill.

On the other hand, dice are something you're actually likely to see in taverns and around town.

Beyond the fact that it's annoying and tedious to a fault (at least to me), gwent has struck me from the start as pretty lore smashing - if you're overly concerned with the lore, at any rate. With the rules, the aesthetic, the particular characters on the cards, and the ubiquity of players, it all just strikes me as completely incongruous with the setting. LIke CDPR set out to make something "cool" and super fan servicey, and who cares whether it fits in with everything else.

It's all just too "meta" in the game. It would have been much more appropriate as a standalone only, I think. A hearthstone killer, as it were.

I actually found the meta aspect of Gwent to be the most entertaining thing about it on top of how much more fun it is. I could care less that characters in the game never comment about the fact that a certain card reminds them of someone. Plus, it is still an optional mini game. If you find that lore smashing aspect displeasing, go right ahead and skip it just like how I (and I'm sure many players) skipped out on Dice Poker in The Witcher 2.

Sure, dice poker is the more aesthetically pleasing minigame but wow, was it boring and annoying to play. At the end of the day, minigames should strive to be fun and rewarding. Dice poker was neither fun nor rewarding. Gwent is.

Do you not think consoles should have access to the mods?

Absolutely they should. A platform is a platform is a platform. It's the greatest perk that PC gamers enjoy, and it'll add years to a game. I'm just very suspicious with the way it's been implemented. I don't like the heavy oversight, and I think the aforementioned Steam fiasco has given us ample cause for concern. They saw all these problems crop up there, and they did nothing to mitigate them in the console rollout.

Frankly, I'm also really unsure of the future of consoles. It’s undeniable that the extreme length of gen 7 was weight around the ankles of pretty much everyone. Towards the end, it negatively affected the quality of old gen games (Skyrim for sure). At the tail end, it crippled the development of new gen games (DAI, inarguably) and ensured that anyone who got old gen versions of cross gen games essentially wasted their money (DAI, Shadows of Morder, CoD if you’re into that). It lasted about twice as long as it should have.

And it seems like the major players realize this, considering the upcoming refresh for both the PS4 and the Xbone. An incremental hardware update like that is really unprecedented. And I think it’s gonna be a disaster, once they start releasing games exclusive to the newer hardware and shutting out owners of release PS4s and Xbones (which they assuredly will, even if they say they won’t).

End of the day, I think consoles need to be more like PCs (they're basically just closed platform budget gaming machines already), and I’d like games to develop for minimum and recommended settings like PC games. Incremental updates like the forthcoming system refreshes would support that well, except for the closed nature of the proprietary OSes. And ideally, console gamers could get mods through the same channels as PC gamers, which would be better for everyone involved (and would bust open the possibilities even more than the present mod rollout has). It wouldn’t be a huge shift, honestly.

Oh, I skipped it entirely, with the exception of the one quest that required it, and I used a mod to cheat. I'm glad it's 99.9% optional. I'm just grumpy that they didn't include any mini-games that I thought were fun.

Perhaps, but on the other, other hand, the standalone game might never have gotten made if they hadn't had a way to gauge the game's potential popularity.

Also, people keep saying Hearthstone killer, or farewell Hearthstone.  I think that is extremely unlikely.  Gwent is a cool little mini game, and as a standalone game it has the potential to be a lot of fun, but looking down the road, how much content do they really have for future expansions?  Hearthstone has had multiple expansions now, and they add a bunch of new cards with each one.  And part of the reason for that is that they have a crap ton of lore and whatnot to draw upon for those new cards.

The Witcher world, in comparison, is a little light.  It's going to be a fun game, no doubt.  But people have been calling this game or that game Warcraft killers for years now.  It's not going to be any easier to push Hearthstone aside.

I actually like Gwent, but not more than Dice Poker, as i feel Gwent takes to much focus away from the rest of the game. Still i like that they added more too it, with difficulty sliders etc. I haven't played Blood and Wine yet, so i don't know how much focus there is on Gwent in it and if they added something new, but excited to see it none the less. Will have to do a full Witcher franchise playthrough this fall.

Hearthstone is all about the deck and cards one holds. Thus meta deck is everywhere. Gwent is about card management and distribution strategy throughout three rounds. I'm pretty sure  Gwent is the Hearthstone killer for me.

Gwent should have been stand alone from the beginning. It really does destroy the game's narrative logic.

I don't think Gwent distroyed the narrative, it is just a mini game. I'm also glad they did not go with the dice poker. I hated it because it is so random in every way, so I played a couple of games and never touched it again. Gwent at least required some degree of intelligence and skill with a little luck with the hand.

Lorewise gwent's mostly 4th wall. If it wasn't, then Thaler would be a terrible spy since everyone on the continent who plays Gwent should know who he really is.

Also, i hope they add terrain cards, and more special card effects too.

Given Gwent is stand-alone game, I would CDPR go wild again. Some card has two effects now.

According to some interview, Gwent will have several single-player campaigns. Stachyra, the master mind behind bloody baron quest, is the narrative designer for Gwent.

For you sure, probably even for me.  But I seriously doubt it's going to knock Hearthstone from it's place as the dominant CCG.  It's to well entrenched with a lot of lore left to draw new cards from.

Hearthstone will be the dominant online card rental service, but I just don't really care about it anymore. I will enjoy Gwent and Starcitizen during the waiting period for Cyberpunk and the next Witcher.

I don't think it destroyed the narrative, since it is easy enough to ignore. It's just that if you don't ignore it, then the fact that every second cheese vendor has a deck full of cards with all your friends on them is really odd.

That roach card is real cute, though.

Well, to be fair, it's randomness was part of the game. It was a type of poker, so it came down to luck of the draw. :P I would say it takes some skill. You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. That sort of thing.
