Hello.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am fairly new to the multiplayer part.
When a character hits level 20, should you always promote them or is there any reason not to?

I generally always did when starting out. Those initial promotions can help alot.
I promote because it's the only real form of continuous progression. Some people don't care, or don't play the game enough to care. The only time I ever haven't promoted a level 20 character was quite recent, because I had an awesome group for killing dragons in perilous and wanted to keep going.
The stats add up.
Alright thank you guys!
I'm the kind of person that can't stand wasting experience so i can't help but promote the instant i hit 20. I haven't played enough to have godly stats so there is really no downside. There are some on this forum that have promoted so many times that they have removed any challenge from the game and talk about getting bored.
So take that with a grain of salt. All things in moderation.
I dunno, the prospect of getting so many promotions that I can Twitch stream myself solo'ing perilous while blindfolded is pretty freakin sweet.

While riding on a dragon with a sword in hand instead of the mouse/controller:

There's only a few trolls like that. They use promotes as a scapegoat for spreading their hatred. I've got a lot of promotes, and I'm certainly not bored.
The game only really gets more fun for me, and a lot weaker kits get viable instead of being stupidly fragile and trashy.

And the system is perfect for people that just play regularly. Log in 15 hours a week and you'll never get near being invincible, even after a year.
Unless you're a Lego, but you don't need promotes for to be invincible almost all the time as Lego.
I'm aiming for 100. Right now, I'm 19/21/19. Long way to go.

I'm at 24/67/62 I'm not bored either. FC is less fun though with pugs when mates aren't online.
I have always wondered what your stats are with your damage output in one of the vids you posted?
100+ on each I'd imagine at least?

To answer your question, you should promote whenever you hit 20 'in my opinion'. You will get stronger in time. You just don't notice it with a single promote.
You could always farm a few dragons at 20 if you feel so inclined but you can promote to 1, do a threatening and be level 8-10 again after one game thesedays.
Like other people have mentioned, I do not like wasting exp (I wasted over 200k a while back playing at level 20, never again)
I like promoting. I get this small sense of victory every time I do it, like "yes! My characters have become marginally better!" Plus, as mentioned above, after promoting I try out a different build. My goal is to always try a new ability, or a new combination of abilities, every time I level up a kit. For example, I thought it was really boring to play as an Archer until I started to play around with his abilities, trying out a few I hadn't used before and abandoning some that I always grabbed. Abandoning Leaping Shot for Evade was scary, but I do not regret it one bit after being able to kite the RTC while the rest of the team were whaling on him from behind. That was one of the most fun matches I've had lately.
The only grievance I have is that I find Routine boring, but I'm not confident enough yet to bring a lvl 1 toon directly to Threatening yet. I always run them through at least 1 routine game first.
13/17/13 and I notice a small the difference compared with stock 10/10/10
I dont do it since the most enjoyment I get is from playing a level 20 character on perilous.

Bioware have hinted they are working on a new difficulty (in another post). I'd like to be ready for that when the time comes. I'd promote regardless but it won't hurt to be stronger when it finally lands.
Be prepared boy scout, be prepared.

Ill prob quit then, since its allrdy sometimes hard to find a decent perilous group on ps4, adding a new difficulty will just make the community even more fragmented.

I bet you would do just fine. Just got to play like a L1; very carefully. I do it all the time and have no problem with others bringing a L1 into Threatening. At this point many players have good experience/stats/gear and simply start at Threatening as a quicker way to level up. I often see either myself other other players taking top score with L1. As I tell myself "I can", so do that for yourself (self support/e,powerment) and see the powerful difference in a simple psychological shift.

FTFY. Carry each other FTW, or just play Katari / Archer / Duelist / Keeper / Virtuoso / whatever you want at level 1.
I promote but normally only after getting all characters to 20. I play them all pretty well equally and once they all hit 20 I promote them all.
I don't care much about it, but I do it eventually when I hit lvl 20.
The only exception is Zither! of course - he is on promotion tour right now! Get your tickets before they're gone people! This is a chance you won't have anytime soon.

This is true... but hey, that Routine banner isn't going to grind itself!
I always promote as I hit level 20.
I always go Perillious with level 1.
I always got oneshotted.
I always praise Odin to not get kicked and get carryed till the end.
I'm still awesome.
