I tried posting this on the answers.ea site for technical support but have had no help and the many unanswered threads there don't give me any confidence that it ever will, so maybe somebody here can help

I use two monitors for my computer, screen 1 is a widescreen monitor with a 1920x1080 resolution and screen 2 is a regular 1280x1024 desktop. I have screen 2 set as the main display so that it has the windows toolbar and desktop while I have games playing on the larger, widescreen monitor

for some reason DA:I insists on using my smaller monitor and appears to have no options to select the other instead. if I play in windowed mode I can drag it onto the other screen but am still limited to the maximum of a 1280x1024 resolution

Excellent question.

I don't have the answer, but I'm very interested in the topic.

Try to force the game to launch in a resolution of 1920x1080 on screen 1 first by putting it as primary and then change back to the way you want it and see if the game is smart enough to open on a screen with the correct resolution.

why do you have the smaller screen as the main one?

I'm not sure whats wrong. I am the same as you, but mine is  a laptop and a large TV monitor. My TV monitor is running the game just fine (connected with an HDMI cord), and I have my laptop screen turned off and all focus is on my TV monitor. Maybe you should try that. Use only the large screen and not have both active?

got it working by doing this, although I have to change it every time I launch the game and back again after it loads

so that the windows taskbar is on that screen allowing me to use the shortcuts while a game or video file is on the widescreen monitor
