Actually this was a nice touch to his subplot and some of you may know it. Apparently if you do night terrors quest at beginning of act 2 and take him to fade with you he comes as vengeance. If you start to deal with the demon there he turns on you in spirit of justice and you have to kill him. Then if you complete turpor's bargain and talk to anders post quest you get massive rivalry points as he says you betrayed him and could have killed him possibly in the fade to add a bit of salt says that your hawke should go and "have fun" or whatever with Merrill because both you and she play fast and loose with demons lol.

Another favorite line of hawke's is in act 3 before hybris fight: "so I summoned a horror. Of course I did. Why wouldn't I do that?"

Yeah, I like his line after if you deal with the demon, "what was worth turning on me, killing me..." and "if you had fought the demon, justice and I would have fought at your side..." There's a whole lot of foreshadowing in that quest. Speaking of which, makes me wonder if Hawke was planned originally to (spoilers for DAI)...

End up with the anchor? The way Hawke guides Feynriel out of the fade so easily. Seemed like it was kind of foreshadowing that, and it is no simple task guiding a lost dreamer/somniari out of the fade, as the Keeper says it requires someone they trust. Flash forward to DAI, and if you have high enough approval with Solas, the Inquisitor winds up in his dream (where they discuss the breach).
