Apparently the End was powered by photosynthesis or something equally stupid. Not disparaging the poster - Kojima had some weird ass ideas in Snake Eater.

 

It makes sense regarding the theme of the character, I think the idea was that he was supposed to be somewhat plantlike, staying prone in the same position for days and weeks on end, absorbing energy from the sun while waiting for his target, the very soul of patience and embodiment of inevitability. Quiet on the other hand seems far more active than her supposed Granddad and I really don't see much similarity in the 2 other than the fact they are both snipers.
