So I will almost certainly regret stepping into this discussion, but I do think you can articulate a clear difference between cultural exchange and cultural appropriation. Fusion cuisine? Probably not appropriation. Chief Wahoo or the team name "Redskins?" Probably appropriation. Even if you aren't promoting blatant stereotypes, there is such a thing as just being tacky. For example, if, when talking to a person from India, I start speaking in a thick Indian accent, that will probably be seen as insulting, even if I mean well and just don't know any better.

 

When I just adopt for myself the customs and practices of another culture without understanding that culture, or when I presume my own understanding of a culture to be superior to members of that culture, I just come across as condescending. And I don't think that recognizing this will result in total cultural stagnation.

I think it depends on what you are doing. Are you trying to learn about a culture that interests you? Are you making the traditional food or playing traditional music from another culture? That's all fine. Are you degrading or disrespecting another culture either willfully or in ignorance? Not cool. There is a difference between making some soul food and playing the blues as a white guy and dressing up in a feathered headdress and making woo-woo-woo noises while skipping about in a circle. One is fine and the other makes you a jackass.

A natural consequence of people thinking your culture is one to look up to or become a part of.

 

People who become proprietorial or territorial about that sort of thing are often considered racist.

 

The rules should be the same for everyone.
