Does anyone else feel sorry for the Collectors?

I'm sure this has been asked here before many many times, but all the topics I've found are really old and I wanted some fresh opinions on this.

So I've just finished my third playthrough of ME2 and noticed something that I hadn't before.

When I'm blowing up the Collector base there's a Collector at the computer console as it's getting destroyed around him, then Harbinger says "releasing control".

It suddenly clicked in me that when he says "releasing control" he means he was releasing his control over the Collectors/Protheans, as opposed to when he says "assuming direct control" when he possesses a Collector directly in the battlefield. Only then could I see the look of despair and sadness in the Collector's eyes as he looked up at Harbinger then at the explosion coming up behind him. I felt really sad suddenly, like the poor guy knew he was finally free from the reapers' control but only as he was about to die.

If you don't know it's this bit: https://youtu.be/fgOCKSKO_2U?t=5m27s

Again, I'm sure it's been brought up many times, but not nearly as much as ME3's ending.

I didn't see despair and sadness. I saw relief that the humiliation is finally over. It's probably just wishful thinking though, most likely there were no thoughts at all.

I guess in retrospect.  But when I just beat the game and "The End Run" is blaring heroically I mainly felt good and glad that I just blew them up.

I completely felt that way after I beat it for the first time. The General just sits there, staring like it just lost a part of itself. Pretty fudged up.

No. No glands, replaced by tech. No digestive system, replaced by tech, No soul, replaced by tech. Whatever they were, gone forever..

Understand now? No art, no culture. Closer to husks than slaves. Tools for Reapers. Protheans dead.. Collectors just final insult.

Must be destroyed.

As Coming0fShadows said, the Collectors were not sentient, living creatures by the time Shepard was facing them. They were Prothean husks. And husks have no feelings.

I half agree, as I did forget about that. It was Mordin who said it right?

Still, I can't shake that feeling. I mean Darth Vader in Star Wars was pretty much all "replaced by tech" but he still had some human soul left in him. It might be that all the "tech" in the Collectors might just be for the sole purpose of controlling them. And when Mordin says "no soul" is that really from a scientific point of view? He might just be speaking figuritively as they only seem to have no soul.

It's like they were brainwashed or had their free will taken away until the last moment when Harbinger no longer had any use of them.

I did at one time but really they are just husks.  They are last cycle's version of the reaper faction.

Considering how Prothians might mentally and biologically work, based on interactions with Javik, yes, I feel damn sorry for them.

I don't think they're only husks. They're not a people, but they're not husks.

I agree with Cameron Star. The Collectors need to die, but I don't need to feel joyous about it.

Look at it as a Mercy Kill. Who wants to live as a Collector for their rest of their lives?
