I'm working on a series of short-ish stories (a dozen or so chapters per fanfic) focusing on a group of Grey Wardens.
It's meant to be a less serious series, told in the flavor of a tavern story.
Use something like Inglorious Bastards, the Dirty Dozen etc. for a glimpse of what i'm working on.

Anyways, on to my question, I want to make interesting characters, and a Tal-Vashoth member seems like a great start for one of my guys.
BUT, even though they don't follow the Qun anymore, by choice or not, would it be lore breaking, or just generally distasteful, to make a Tal-Vashoth Warden?

There were rumors about Tal-Vashoth taking the Joining. I think this is mentioned in a codex from Origins. We don't know if they succeeded, or if they are still a part of the Order. But I don't think it would really break lore.

After the possibility in some people's playthroughs that there were people in Thedas who were willing to consider a Tal-Vashoth as the Herald of Andraste, I don't think Tal-Vashoth Grey Wardens are unlikely at all. We know the kossith can be affected by the Taint (ogres and such) so I imagine the Joining would be the same for them as it would be for anyone else.

There is mention of a rumor in WoT that Qunari have indeed undertaken the Joinning recently. They would be few and far between though, but there is no reason why they should be unable to. That we know of anyway.

Do what ever you want. Tal-Vashoth  being part of the wardens is not lore braking.

But the same passage says that there are no Qunari Gray Wardens... it would seem that while a few have undertaken the Joining, there's yet to be a successful candidate...

Still, that's a lot of thinking based on a little bit of text that doesn't necessarily need to be completely accurate.

I think what was meant, is that there are no Qunari (as follower of the Qun) Grey Wardens, but there are members of the race who have undertaken the Joinning, wether or not any survived, we simply don't know. But it is basically just a piece of fluff, used to set the gears in motion, so that if you want to start an RP, you get a bit of a frame for what is possible and what isn't.
