So they had a warcraft like animation where the rogue stabbed a target from 6 different angles in rapid succession teleporting out of thin air? Alchemical damage that did more than the DAO wizard's meteor? I really should try DAO again..

Before Hidden Blades there was Flicker, only it was even more bullshit since it hit multiple targets in a fairly large radius

While no alchemy existed that inflicted more damage than magic there was still Arrow Of Slaying, Critical Shot, Heartseeker, Twin Fangs, Punisher, Unending Flurry and the entire archery tree from Awakening (which still didn't make archery any less boring).

Just as others would like to go back to mages having specs like Arcane Warrior, I would prefer not to go back to DAO rogues as Rogue Hawke and Rogue Inquisitor are so much more powerful than their Warden counterpart.

Well not only that, but throughout the games you always had that one ability that was like wut-I-can-totally-do-this? In Origins, when I was first attacked by a hurlock alpha, and my melee group was thrown back, I was like wtf was that? Mind blast? Did Black Bolt suddenly make his way into the game? And then there was Mhairi with her devastating chronic super flatulence.

Flicker was easily the worst offender for the rogue though, because at least in subsequent games, similar powers were used strictly for single targets. Now that sort of thing is sort of reserved for Destiny's blade dancer for hunters.

I guess I like my powerful sorceror mages more than useful rogues heh.. No, I was not an arcane warrior. I liked my fire magic. DAI fire magic is counterproductive. Fear makes the enemies run around when I argue they should stand still, panicked and frightened DESPITE KNOWING FULL WELL NO ONE WOULD EVER STAND STILL WILLINGLY IN THE FIRE!!! Arrrghh...

You know, I wonder what dirty, unsanitized, offensive, and sad combat would look like.

I've always been partial to electrical attacks myself. I just love the whole shooting lightning at fools bit, and I find it's immensely more useful in Inquisition for crowd control. Upgraded static cage and chain lightning will usually keep so many mooks in check it's ridiculous.

The bolded is certainly understandable.

It wasn't as if Rogue Wardens were useless just that they're not even close to being on par with their successors.

Dark Souls I imagine, although I actually love that game (it took a while to happen though.)

One thing, I really enjoy about the electrical attacks in DAI, are they reflect their nature in actual combat in a positive way. Fire, they run around flailing about, sure it's realistic, but it actually causes more problems when they run. Electricity.. ZzZzzzzzzzZZZtttttt!!! Stunned in place, thrown back I think too.. Actual useful magic. But it felt low in damage.

I love bloodborne, unrelated by the way but sort of to my complain fest. They made magic irrelevant in that game unless it's for PvE and it's very limited. Why does a gun when specialized in the stat for that weapon (bloodtinge) hit for roughly the same damage for one third the cost of silver bullets as a cannon? I mean it takes 12 silver bullets to use a cannon, and three shots from an evelyn hit for the same amount. It makes no sense.. The combat, while fun, feels like a far cry from any souls game prior so I have my gripes with bloodborne's combat as much as I like the environment and theme and story of the game.

If you take away anything from my rants, know that I don't just rag on DAI. I rag on series I enjoy but have major gripes about in certain areas.

I think that there's a pretty fair trade-off here, though. With rogues, they can inflict more damage in fewer hits, but mages easily have the upper hand when it comes to controlling the battlefield. When I played as a Knight-Enchanter, it came to the point where few enemies could even get near me, and when they did, I gave them a face full of spirit blade or passed through them with upgraded Fade Step and froze them solid for someone else to shatter. Left and right I had enemies paralyzed and exploding. No matter how good my rogue was, she could never manage that.

Fair enough. I like DAI but it's by no means perfect although combat in Bioware games has never been all that great IMO.

As to your OT, was magic strong in Dark Souls PVP?
I'm curious since light armour and a spear is more my thing.

Or when bards used the power of song to inspire allies and paralyze enemies. And they say DA:I is the Disney one.

Being able to inspire via song isn't that magical. Paralyzing, however, is.

Magic is very scary in dark souls which it should be. There aren't many "useless" builds with magic involved so long as you can adequately bait someone into a nasty soul spear or a resonant blade hehehe.. Too bad for the other guy that wasn't prepared to use a bow eh?

Bloodborne.. They replaced spells with tools which makes absolute sense. The idea is that a hunter can use a tool with arcane knowledge and the more one is knowledgeable in tools, the greater the power of said tool. Works okay in player versus engine where npcs may..at best try to dash to the side to avoid the projectiles.. But generally, they are so slow, or easy to dash through, cast animation is so slow and even at the soft cap of the arcane stat, one generally does roughly the same amount of damage as say someone who specialized in guns. Except guns hit harder, and faster, for far less silver bullet (the games version of mana or resource cost) use. Clear imbalance...

The sustained abilities were annoying, true... but in DAI it's everything. You can't even charge a guy without creating a magical windtunnel.

I imagine that if enemies had a charging ability in Origins, you would very likely get some kind of visual representation of it so you will know it's going to happen. Perhaps in the future it would be nice to be able to add a little extra challenge by having all effects be turned off so you just don't know what's going to happen, but I dunno.

But anyway, the sustained abilities are way worse, because aside from the ridiculous effects or even sounds they might make during combat, the very worst part was that they were also there during dialogue, so when you have that super serious talk with plot-relevant NPC #3, the moment is kind of ruined when everyone looks like they're being shrouded in Strawberry Shortcake's spirit aura.

Can we agree at all on preferring more face to face dialogues instead of the zoom in? I want to see a person's facial expression hehe..

I guess it depends. There are some encounters where I feel it would really make no difference, like if I'm talking to a random quest giver like the scout that's looking for Ritts, or the other scout warning of bandits.

I'd rather my Mage be terrifying of leaving destruction wherever he or she went. Not being feared for the support magic they can lend through control. Control also can be used by rogues and fighters in my opinion with taunt and sleep powder. Not quite the same as a blizzard but I think the games lore should justify their power.

With pinkish purple sparkles! I was one of the thousands of people lucky enough to mod that removed those. I also loved how a lot of different buffs in Origins came with it's own set of annoying rainbow colors.

By yelling. First time Leliana started "singing" by basically just yelling once loudly I decided Orlais had maybe a different take on "music".

Pretty much, I didn't mind it when it was around completely random people

Cannon's 10, 5 if you use blood bullets... I think the key is they wanted guys to be supplementary to Melee, they were never meant to be the main show, so to speak.

God, imagine dragon age with tactics and dark souls style combat, a variety of attacks per weapon that go beyond slash slash slash.

Ea would consider that too hard for us to learn though, much like the tactics menu.

I found that I was dying way too easily, so that's when I picked up Parry and Frost Flask, and I thought it worked out great.

Between Flask of Fire, Twin Fangs, and Deathblow, your DPS is already so good that staying alive becomes paramount.
