Darkspawn have attacked as well, seeking him. I can only assume they are summoned the same way. Somehow, his magic lets him speak through the blight itself, affecting any who bear its taint.

This same power stays the hand of any Warden who approaches to kill him.

Yeah, per lore, Wardens should be unable to even get close to Corypheus.

The Architect may just have different powers.

It could just be his influence is based on proximity, he's able to control Wardens in his immediate presence but only influence further afield and that's why he needed the binding spell.

Though that raises the question of why Hawke's sibling wasn't affected. (Being an abomination explains Anders) I'm willing to chalk that up to Cory being "not all there" when he woke up.

Janeka still had enough control of herself to try to bind him.

He just blocked it efortlessly.

Yeah, I think they just have different abilities from each other.

Dumat was the most powerful of all the Old Gods, so it stands to reason that his priest, Corypheus, will be the strongest of the Magisters too. Perhaps he took more of the Taint than the other priests?

Or maybe his role as the "Conductor" in the ritual plays part in his ability to "conduct" others through the taint... Not sure if that's too far fetched.

The binding ritual is the mind control spell. The game is unclear whether closing the rift breaks it (there is the implication if you save the Wardens that it is broken) but the mechanism of it is very unclear (that is it is unclear if it was broken by other means).

We have - again - zero proof Corypheus mind controls Wardens. We saw a sleeping Corypheus subtly influence the thoughts and desires of GWs. But what we see in DAI goes far beyond that influence. It is a total level of domination that allows for no apparent independent thought.

Recently I replayed the part of the Temple of Mythal where we first encounter the Wardens and all the dialogue definitely says they are mind controlled. The Inquisitor says they are enslaved and Cassandra says "If they are forced to obey him, death will be a mercy."

We know that Corypheus can influence the Wardens to free him when he's unconscious and that he can mentally prevent them from killing him when he's awake but confused. That is something both a codex entry in Legacy and Varric's comments in Inquisition both attest to. It's not even a stretch at all to think now that he's awake and more lucid he can control Wardens even more. I really don't see how anything in either game even hints at any other possible conclusion.

Neither characters line is proof of anything. The Inquisitor absolutely does not know what Corypheus can do. Neither does Cassandra. It is purely speculation. Again: even if we accept they are mind controlled there is nothing to justify the inference it is from some innate power of Corypheus.

It is an incredible stretch to go from "can influence" to "can dominate". To use an example: the fact that humans can outrun a tortoise is not proof they can outrun a cheetah.

The only instance of mind control we see is demon binding - done by a Tevinter human mages - and blood magic.

What if it is Bertie the tortoise?

You're dismissing every piece of evidence that the game provides out of hand. There is no other explanation that is provided. That is the message the game is trying to tell us. It isn't a stretch at all. It's just the logical extension of the powers he's already demonstrated and it it fits exactly with all the circumstances we see him with Wardens in. The ones who restrained the Divine are were doing that long before the trouble at Adamant Fortress.
