In a RNG infested game the Avvar is the most item dependant character we have now and to make things worse it is also promotion dependant . How can i play this character efectively if i have no purples and a barely +15/+20 promotions ? If anything even looks at me funny beyond routine it's time to say goodbye because i have no means to mitigate the damage other than +1231 promotions. I for one think it needs a buff so we players without massive promotions and no RNG luck can at least enjoy it a little bit.

Cover + Barrier babysitting out of cover.

He has a lot of legitimate issues with defense, abilities failing to track (consistently hit), and long animations leaving him vulnerable.

The good news is there's very good builds out for him, and if you can get into a Perilous Dragon Hunting group, you can get end game weapons within a week.

Avvar + Virtuoso + Duelist in the same group is complete devastation (take whatever you want as a fourth).

When my mate is Avvar I babysit with Virtuoso and follow him everywhere, even out in the open and prioritise Barrier > HoH/HoK > Attack Speed (sometimes swapping HoK/Attack Speed order as the situation calls for it)

You can use cover in FC at the ladders to pull the zone to you if you wish.  It is much safer to do this until you get used to FC perilous.

Last game we played we had Avvar Virtuoso 2xDuelist and just fought out in the open and wrecked everything.

That upgraded Virt barrier is just wow.

Treat an Avvar like Top Gun and never ever leave your wingman.

EDIT: spelling fixes

I only play pug games since none of my friends play this game, so the majority of the strategies you presented here rarely happen there. I'm forced to play archer or hunter since the only item i've been blessed with by the retarded RNG is a griffon bow and materials drop from dragon hunting. I sincerely wish i can enjoy the Avvar but in my present situation i rather bring a lvl 1 character to threatening than the lvl 10+ Avvar.

He needs a buff, but I would prefer something more conservative like, for instance, more Health. If he gets Guard on hit like the Katari, he will become broken and pretty much render the Katari obsolete.

Too late for that. He's disgustingly OP by end-game. Getting there is another matter.

EDIT: oh and also , the disconnects have been Horrible tonight for me. I hope they are working on this issue  :-(

In that case I would suggest a few routines and have your Avaar waiting at level 7 or 8.

When you see a barrier class on Threatening just change to Avaar. I still see Keepers, Elementalists and many many Zithers in PUG threatenings.

Melee have always been weak to archers.  You should have seen Katari before the buff and Reaver is still prone to dying a lot if you are not careful. It's not Avaar specific.  It's more Warrior specific.  Heal on Kill ring(s) are essential for me on warrior classes, except maybe the all powerful Katari, and changed my opinion on their survivability.

Your just going to have to make good use of cover and hope the guys you are PUGing with want to work as a team and not run off in the distance and slaughter everything :(   Not great I know.

I do understand where you are coming from though as I have had more fails than wins with PUGs on Perilous and even Threatening is dodgy.

I hope you have some better experiences as this is a good game IMO

I would have no idea how to buff the Avvar.  With a barrier babysitter he is awesome.

NOTE TO DEVS:  Buffs of any kind are always welcome though   :bandit:  Yes you.

Well...
Avvar is strangely well balanced. Definition of glass cannon. Nobody can deal that amount of aoe damage.
Defense is his only weakness. Either need to played like "behind corner assassin" or with barrier as wrecking ball of destruction.
If avvar defense was similar to this on katari...omg this would so much op.

Yea you cant really buff avvar's defence or it would be superior to katari in just about every way.

i only have about 10 promotions and i do perfectly well with avvar, you do need a barrier user though, almost a requirement.

I have comparatively very few promotions and the blue GH that looks like a bloody Stick Horse, and I'm doing well with him on Threatening, and just as well or bad as with other characters on Perilous.

Frozen Defense, Hakkon's Charge, the Ice Detonator and his upgraded lightning whirl attack keep me alive fairly well. I'm actually having a way easier time staying alive and doing fine than with the Reaver (which I'm certain is also entirely my fault in her case).

I see what the general problem is, with people having been conditioned to expect Warriors to be sturdy & durable in fantasy RPGs by just tanking most damage (which doesn't work in DA and never has. Even Le Beast the Sten in DAO was basically a rogue who died as fast when just sent him ahead), but not his individual one.

It's the same problem people seem to have with any character whose survivability isn't solely depended on Passive or ongoing skills (Isabela's system, Shield Wall/ WF, Barrier). These are considered "non trash" because you don't have to sacrifice too much on keeping them alive - nobody finds it strange that Korbin would be defensive or Neria naturally using up a slot for Barrier. Isabela even incorporates her survivability without further ado - all of these things are considered more prestigous, than say, my favourite example the Assassin. Argent has ALL (as in 100%) of failsafe jokers a rogue can get at her disposal, but people simply aren't willing to give up dealing more damage to stay alive.

All of which is my personal opinion, most of it purely empirical.

What kind of brakes this character is that he is almost completely dependent on heal on kill items because his guard generation is so poor.

That said, if you have HoK equipment he is pretty strong. I have a belt of health(200hp) and a greatsword of the dragon(8%HoK), which make him very survivable on threatning.

It's a strange class.  There seems to be no 'oh i am hurt' moments when i play.  i can be going along having a great game, even taking on larger mobs, doing really well and not getting too hurt, then all of a sudden.....dead!

But get a barrier and life is easy. It was only a threatening match but I was getting 15+ kill streaks every zone last night.

His abilities really do synergize (is that a word?) really well in my mind.  Still on my 1st build but the charge, electric field (which is great) and leaping sword slam are great abilities.  I also have the mini whirlwind.  Pretty fun class to play even if he is squishy.

I agree the Avvar needs to be buffed.

In a multiplayer game where you can play almost every character on perilous with low level gear, almost no promotions and with almost no game experience at all, it seems unfair that the Avvar cannot be played as such.

Drascas will chastise the order I use my abilities, but I like the charge, electric field, leaping fire slam and the smash move that changes elements. The nice trick is that while each elemental smash has a cooldown, they have their own cooldown so if you go through all 3 they you never get the CD. So I charge, ice smash, electric field, lightning smash, leaping fire, fire smash. With my stamina amulet you can get off all 6 moves and still have stamina.

My opinion is that the avvar is fine, given moderate promotions and

gear level.

My promotions are 22/24/23, Sulivan blade, blue HOK ring, superb

stamina neck, heal belt, superb crit or crit damage on last remaining

ring.

I only pug, so starting off, a couple of routines are usually

plenty to get early levels.  After that, focusing on damage

resistance (check out penguins avvar video), is very

effective for threatening pugs.  Weaker pugs means

sticking to the same ambush tactics you had to use

on katari pre guard buff.

Just give the poor guy fade shield. Give fade shield to every class.

Maybe something like replacing his +3 str on his passives to +3 con, or giving him turn the bolt/blade in his defensive tree. What sucks is you cant really get CC (PS, WH) without sacrificing an element.

Honestly I don't think it would be bad to give him a fade shield-like ability, except it's made of guard and less efficient. Say, 10% of his elemental damage is converted to guard. Don't increase his health, and make him dependent on doing damage to keep his guard up and stay alive.
