There are two ways I know of.

1. Respawn the Rift Enemies - aka The Brave, Brave Sir Robin Technique:
Find a rift with a particular enemy (Revenant, Arcane Horror, Rage Demon) in the opening spawn and focus kill it quickly. Loot the dead enemy, and then Run Away! Run Away! and run far enough away from the rift to get out of combat. The rift will close, and you can heal up. When you get near it again the same enemy should respawn for you to kill again. I used this method at a rift in the north east of Crestwood. An Arcane Horror spawns in the first rift fight. I usually stealth in a rogue behind it, have a mage Winter's Grasp it, then my rogue will twin fang / death blow it for s shatter and a quick kill. Looting it gets you an Arcane Horror heart and often some cloth.

2. Farm the Closed Rift - aka The Five Fast Fingers of Death Technique:
After you close a rift you get a rift loot drop. It usually contains an essence and another item. Take the essence and leave the other item. When you reenter the zone the loot drop will reapawn, usually with another essence. The rift in the south west of the Hinterlands drops fire essence and often a nice amount of high armor metal like 20 lazurite. Using this method requires you to remember where the rift was located.

So without exploiting there is no way to actually get more materials for crafting runes?

So in theory one should keep his runes in storage until he can crat T4 mats in T3 weapon schem masterpiece?

You can harvest low-level essences from the random demons that prowl the Exalted Plains even after the rifts are closed, but you're pretty much limited to fire essences and spirit essences, and not even upgraded versions of them.

Hissing Waste- the tomb of Fariel quest- if you pick the veil fire in the wrong sequence- a mess of demons will spawn- they will drop rune crafting materials. For Superb Runes, though- the Rifts in the Hissing Waste and in Emprise Du Lion- will drop two items- a pure elemental material (Frost, Fire, Lightning, or Spirit) and something else. Hop back and forth between the two locales and you'll have what you need in no time.

I add runes to weapons and then upgrade as I get better ones. Easy enough to replace a plain or Master Rune with a Superb one.

So it is as I said unless I fail on purpose in order to abuse a system I can't get the mats.

so I should in theory hoard the mats before I finish the quests.. :P

You can still close the rifts- it's just save scumming whatever gets dropped after you close it. But yes- hoard the mats.

I really think DA:2 had the best crafting system.

You could craft runes and potions easily for gold instead of all the hassle of random drops.
