Instead of making Expies of everything? I mean, it was a chance to do a full epic trilogy. Heck, I can even see it now.

Robotnik's Coup, all the way up to Endgame (Death of Robotnik)
Sonic Chronicles 2nd game
Brave New World, all the way up to the Gene Bomb (Rise of Eggman Empire, up to Sonic's "Death" in a planetary war)
Sonic Chronicles 3rd game
Sonic's return from space, up to the fall of the Eggman empire (Eggman going insane and consequent imprisonment).
So....what happened? Why not just use the actual comic stories and characters? It's all owned by Sega right? I heard the backlash from the author sueing for making Expies of his characters is what caused the long running comic to get wiped and rebooted.
As a long time reader of the comics (until the reboot), I'm honestly curious.
I mean the game was obviously based on/inspired by the comics, so I'm wondering why you didn't go all the way and just a trilogy DIRECTLY based on the comics?
