Yeah, but it's better to balance out metals and leathers, IMO.
Really depends on how much you materials you have at your disposal.

In my case, having crafted a lot of armors, I had a REALLY disproportionate metals to anything else ratio. Was a godsend to be able to craft only with metals until I got to the point where I could balance "one stack" only of different mats.

Although unless one is a completionist, crafting 4-5 armors per class is more than enough. I generally check Shadohz75's YouTube Channel to see which color armor I like and I craft only those, no point IMO to craft all armors. Having said that pre-patch 7 I had all the armors crafted because there was literally nothing else to craft.  <_<

Do the armor unlocks not take up drop spots in chests that could be weapons or accessories?  I read an old guide about salvaging acting like you should craft as many armors as possible to improve your drop rate for those things.

I believe that is true, I've had a reasonable RNG experience and have all the armors...

This is the perfect proof of why BioWare should really do something consistent about bringing Cloth drops in line with the rest. :P

Only unlockable armors seem to drop from chests/store. I never got any advanced/modified armors from chests so maybe it makes no sense to craft them. I'm not sure about unlockable next tier armor sets as these may drop from chests. However, last time I had that drop was in January. They might have changed the system recently. But I got three times Isabella's first armor yesterday from dragon call 2000 chest in store, from threatening dragon, and from treasure chest in game. It might have been the same armor glitching after match, no way to tell. So, I was being cheated out of 2 good (or bad) items) by getting what I already have.

I've had like two or three armor drops around Dec-Jan myself, since then only armor I've found was Avvar from a Dragon Drop and Zither from the Dragonslayer Chest. Had to craft Isabella myself. I'm thinking they ninja-removed armors from the drop pool, could be wrong here.

I had thought I got a couple Lego upgrade armors, as well as an assassin and the alchemist rigging (cinder) in chests, but maybe I remembered wrong.

No you're right, some armors did drop. I had a few drops for Templar, Reaver, Keeper and Hunter. And the one for Hunter was his Veteran Jacket(Chaser) which is top tier armor for him. But this was back in Dec-Jan.

I'm out of August Ram, Ram, Dragonling, Bronto, Druffalo leathers and Pragon's Luster, Iron, Onyx, Drakestone metals!
At one point in time I had over 230 Iron! :)

In that case you could craft a Rogue Weapon upgrade that takes only Metal & Cloth or both individually and salvage it for Leather depending on the crafted upgrade's tier.

Same theory applies to Warrior Weapon upgrades, salvage Warrior weapon upgrades and get Metal, but who'd do that? :D

Excellent tip. I had barely saved up to make Zither, now it should be no problem getting Isabela as well.

To me it seems no armor ever drops that is of higher tier than you have made yourself. I've often got one of the better variants ("materials") once I created the base set. But I'm more a casual player than most of you here it seems and haven't earned that much gold, so maybe it's more of a drop rate issue.

It's okay, I'm a casual myself, no harm in being a casual!

Then we're two ;). Just meant that I might not have much numbers backing me up.
