I'm doing a second playthrough as a no-nonsense Dalish while trying to make choices I didn't make in my original go round.  So I chose to side with the templars, and I have to say, siding with the mages kinda gets you the short end of the stick.

Even though I found the experience in Redcliffe Castle more interesting than the one in Therinfall Redoubt, Therinfall has a side quest that earns you six attribute points, including three class-specific ones.  Siding with the templars also allows you access to Corypheus' memories, which aren't present in the Shrine of Dumat if you side with the mages.

Keep in mind that I'm not really criticizing; I'm just a little jealous because my personal "head canon" will side with the mages.  I am grateful to Bioware for making games that I not only always want to finish but also play more than once, which I've never done before.

On my second playthrough I thought I would give the templar route a chance for the sake of something different. I got through Therinfall but had to reload a save and return to my usual mages. It just made sense for my new Dalish mage Inq.

I definitely think the mage recruitment quest is better (TIME TRAVEL, even if it isn't really elaborated on at all) but I miss out on Calpernia which is a shame. I'm hoping she returns in some capacity if the next game is in Tevinter.

Also you get Ser Barris instead of Fiona (who prefers to take up space in Skyhold rather then help at all) and promoting him to Knight Commander is a really cool moment.

I found something interesting about the choice you make too.

If you choose the Mages you get to see Connor, Alistair, Anora, Fiona and Samson, but if you choose the Templars, you get new faces (bad pun I did not intend) except for Cole.

You can see Connor even if you side with the templars, he's at Redcliffe's docks.

The templar mission is infinitely better. Not only is it more exciting to play, but the time travel plot was boring. Plus, Cole >> Dorian

If you go there before you choose the Templars, but at that point I feel like I already entered the Mage mission. I know if you do go through with it right up to Cullen telling you to back out and go with the Templars, Dorian will acknowledge you at the gates because you already met. It's not a bad idea though if you want to recruit that Tranquil agent too before you leave. Everyone is gone after you make your choice.

I LOVE Cole so much (and Dorian too, but I relate to Cole a lot), but for me it's Ser Barris >> Fiona  :P and also because he's with you at the Wilds later.

Eh, I see it as informed decision making. I meet with Alexius, decide it's a trap, the time magic violates the laws of magic too much to be believable. And besides, the templars are known to have the ability to reinforce the Veil, and the Breach is nothing more than a giant hole in it.

With the mages, it's...what? Dump a bunch of magic into it, like water in a bucket?

I'll be honest, I always side with the Templars, even as Mage Hakwe, but in DAO I will not do it because I want to save Connor and keep his family alive and Jowan free of using more blood magic. Also I like how you can play 'Where's Waldo' with Cole and Envy in the Redoubt at the beginning. Lol but I do wish you didn't have to play the Mage quest to get Cullen as a companion for a bit.

My personal canon Inquisitor is a mage romancing Dorian, so the mage route seems like the better fit.  I also want to see Fiona have a happier ending because I really enjoyed "The Calling" novel and like the added King Alistair dynamic if she survives.  I personally found Redcliffe Castle's grim alternate future more interesting, even though I liked Cole's introduction at Therinfall.  My Dalish Inquisitor is basically a hard ass, but she has a soft spot for Cole for his involvement.

I know what you mean. Fiona's end is just so wrong. I would have liked her to still be alive if I go with the Templars. It seems the big choices always end in someone losing. Mages/Templars Ser Barris/Fiona Warden/Hawke

With my Templar runs, I rationalize it as this. That, and obviously something shady is going on with the Mages, and wouldn't it be nice to be able to take down the Magisters and use the Inquisition to barter a peace between the renewed Mage Rebellion and the Templar Order? (The Magisters aren't used to dealing with actual Templars, so they'd prove invaluable for a mission into a castle full of Magisters and company.) Sealing the Breach with anti magic is the priority, and by then it's too late. :(

My first run I was a Dalish mage.   I initially went to Redcliffe because I was invited and my sympathies were with the mages.   Then I discovered they (or their leader Fiona) had sold out to the Tevinter Imperium.  Didn't actually see those who objected doing anything other than moan about this though.  This was a betrayal of not only the humans of Ferelden but also the Dalish who lived there.   If there is one thing I had been taught to hate and mistrust more than the Chantry, it was Tevinter.    As a mage I found the whole time travel story a bit far fetched (I could even comment that if time travel were possible, wouldn't the Dalish have tried it?)   Fiona's confusion seemed far more likely the result of blood magic.    So I decided to go with Cullen's advice and call in some anti-magic experts to help not just with the breach but also deal with the foreign invaders afterwards.

Unfortunately, on that run the game bugged when I reached Therinfall and after the Fade sequence I was suddenly minus my companions.    I had gone there at the earliest level possible and now had to deal with defending the Templars in the hall plus the Envy demon, alone.   This proved not possible, so I reloaded, did a few more quests to get my levels up and then, not knowing it was a bug, decided I'd go with the mages run instead, because perhaps the Templars run was weighted against mages.   Subsequently discovered my mistake.    Next run I was an elven hunter and followed my original instincts and went with the Templars.

You don't have to support the Chantry to opt for the Templars.   You also don't have to ally with them and if you conscript them you effectively disband the Templar order.   If you get any Divine other than Leliana, the outcome is better on the Templar path than the mages one because basically Fiona never learns and will always cause trouble if people don't vote the way she wants them to.   Calpurnia is a much more interesting lieutenant than Samson and you also reduce the amount of red lyrium around Thedas.    You also save a lot of ordinary Templars from a fate worse than death.     When Cole and Dorian turn up at Haven, your reaction makes more sense on the Templar run, particularly if you have already met Dorian at Redcliffe.   I trust Cole because he helped me defeat the demon in my mind and I realise that I may have misjudged Dorian.

I have actually done more runs on the Hushed Whispers path, although usually conscripting rather than allying with the mages, but my canon version is definitely the Templar one.

Barris > Fiona. Despite being more humble than when she was a Warden, Fiona never learns her freaking lesson. She never thinks it might be a bad idea to wantonly slaughter everyone who doesn't agree with her.
