So as a lot of you guys know, I am a sort of pseudo-journalist and critic who writes about video games. Lately I have been doing some work at a place called Techraptor, and they have recently green-lit a new editorial series I have been meaning to get to in a long time.
The title of the series is Playing Roles. It is RPG focused, and the goal is to go into mechanics, design, the history and culture of role-playing video games, as well as do a review of some old RPG's every once and a while and overall, talk about the medium.
My first article, Part one of 2 (I had to cut the article in half) is titled The Etymology of RPG's. I kind of took a risk on this, but I figure I should get it out of the way in the first piece, where we go into some early history regarding RPG's and actually bring up the "genre debates" we see regarding East vs. West role-playing games.
I am mostly posting this here to see if anyone in the role-playing game community can provide feedback, opinions, or maybe if you have any suggestion for topics or games to retro-review.
The link to the article is here, I hope you guys enjoy t.
