Its not time travel. It was explained in the codex. It warps space and time around the person traveling. The "time travel" theory wouldn't apply here as time is also warped.
Was time travel explained?

You never travel FTL in Mass Effect. That is the beauty and the genius of the concept of the Mass Effect.
If you are actually interested in physics, try this:
Suppose that the speed of light in a vacuum is NOT constant, but rather variable as it is in a mass effect field (the field causes the speed of light to be markedly raised).
Now experiment: Plug a higher speed of light into the equations of relativity and mass-energy equivalence and see what happens.
