Hmm.

A lot of people are comparing this to the Black Widow "Age of Me" trailer.

Okay admittedly that direction wouldn't work for Black Widow since, we know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe Natasha Romanov wouldn't act like that. However the parody was good at demonstrating how Hollywood still doesn't get women and panders to how they think women act.

So how interesting that the Supergirl trailer is similar to this in some ways. However once you get past the first two minutes, you actually get the origins of a superhero. You see her do everything that a Superhero should (kicking butt and taking names). It is interesting how she actually turns to her friends for help. I also loved how she doesn't spend ages in a moral quandary about whether to reveal her secret identity. At least 3 people know who she is.

This could be a quirky, funny character with a light and bright tone. No brooding and overbearing darkness and an equal emphasis on her personal, professional and superhero lives. Which when you think of it is very stressful. Juggling three lives is no easy feat and I think turning to friends for help is not only a strong character trait (which is sadly seen as a sign of weakness) but also a good idea.

What I love about superheroes is the search of self identity. This is such a big theme in people's teenage years, when people are trying to figure out who they are, and heck even me (a 26 year old) am trying to figure this out. So seeing a character right at the start of their journey trying to find the work/life/superhero balance, find out who they are and develop their superhero skills is the reason I love origin stories. I felt that the new Daredevil TV series did this really well.

As for the romantic comedy side of the show. Umm. Well. I'm not into romantic comedies. I don't mind them. If they're funny I can get behind them. This could work. The lead of a romantic comedy is typically a clumsy, dorky, 20-30 something who is incredibly naive and is engaged in a love triangle whilst also trying to sort out her own self esteem issues. In other words the last thing you expect from a superhero. In a way I've just described Clark Kent. So maybe that's what they're going for.

If you watched The New Adventures of Superman (or Louis and Clark) the show is just like this. You have Clark Kent a 20-30 something who is clumsy, dorky individual trying to figure out who he is whilst taking on the challenging mantle of a superhero. That show spent a long time showing his personal and professional life. It also showed him being a Superhero. I know people compare this show to Smallville, but I think this show is going to have more in common with Louis and Clark. By this I mean, the origin story will just be the first two parter and then once that is out of the way, we get to see Superman in action.

I'm looking forward to this show. It will probably be terrible, but I'm going to give this show a chance. The trailer is in the spoiler. It is a very spoiler heavy trailer, in the sense that it (probably) gives away the entire plot of the first 2-3 episodes of the series.

Look cheesy and teeny. I guess I am not the targeted demo.

At 4:07 when the cheesy pop music started  . No. Not for me

Based on my impressions of the trailer "it's not a man!!!1", and black Olsen: If this series is a success it could be the beginning of a whole new franchise of SJW mascots. They could gather them all together in a movie series of characters consisting of the womyn the gender confused, and people of color as they smash the Caucasian patriarchy. They can name them selves the social justice league.

I'd watch it.

However the parody was good at demonstrating how Hollywood still doesn't get women and panders to how they think women act.

To be fair, Hollywood doesn't "get" anyone, and panders to how they think everyone acts. But really, all Hollywood generally represents effectively is how people in Hollywood (and to a lesser extent, California) act. And not even that most of the time.

Seriously, in Hollywood movies/TV:

- No one goes to the bathroom

- No one says goodbye at the end of a phone conversation. They just automatically know when it's over and hang up.

- No one ever dies. They just look dead until they come back in a later episode (if we're lucky, there's some loose explanation as to why they're not dead.)

- People can say whatever they want never face repercussions for it.

- Everyone talks exactly the same, except for for whatever token "outsider" has a regional, ethnic, or national accent (I admit this one is improving... slowly...)

Frankly, I might as well stop, because I could spend literally days going on about how Hollywood does not effectively represent anyone. Not even (choq!) men.

Pretty much what I was thinking.

I'm going to give it a shot. This is very much like Lois and Clark and well I enjoyed that show a lot.

I was thinking: If Lois was the damsel in distress who got saved every week, does that mean this show will have a male damsel who has to be saved every week?

Male Love Interest: Help me Supergirl!

Supergirl: Again? Sigh. Now I know what my cousin keeps complaining about.

Male Love Interest: Heeelllppp!

[Supergirl rescues Male Love Interest]

Male Love Interest: Thank you Supergirl. I love you.

Supergirl: Ugh. Can you try not to get captured? Take self defence classes and a healthy dose of common sense. This is getting tiresome. Most of the time the people capturing you don't even have super powers. I have a city to protect. I can't go haul your ass out of trouble every time, when there's a hundred people trapped in a burning building.

Male Love Interest: Thank you. I'll try to be more careful next time.

[Some time later]

Supergirl: Hey Clark. Doesn't rescuing Louis get tiresome?

Superman: Nope.

Supergirl: But she is in mortal danger all of the time.

Superman: She is the bravest person I know. She constant throws herself into mortal danger to expose the truth.

Supergirl: My love interest isn't brave. He's just stupid. Really stupid.

There is one scene I really loved.

I'll paraphrase it.

Supergirl: I don't like her name. Shouldn't she be called Superwoman?

Boss: What's wrong with being a girl? I'm a strong, badass and successful girl. I'm also the boss!

Supergirl: Huh.

I like that scene because that sums up what they're trying to do.

Girl is seen as a negative. Have you ever heard of the phrase "like a girl".

"You hit like a girl"

"You run like a girl"

"You scream like a girl"

"You cry like a girl"

The protagonist is a "girl". The series is trying to say there is nothing weak about being a "girl".

You can be strong, independent and a force to be reckoned with and still be a "girl".

It started very rom-com-y, with lots of stuff on dating and Calista Flockhart (a.k.a. Ally McBeal) playing a Devil Wears Prada-style ice queen boss character. Only near the end did it get to the badassery. Kara seems to be you standard run-off-the-mill "regular girl" type character.

All in all, not great first impressions, but I will give it a chance.

There was one line that made me think "awesome" though.

"What do you think is so bad about 'girl'? I'm a 'girl' annnd your boss annnd powerful annnd rich, and hot and smart. So if you perceive Supergirl as less than excellent isn't the real problem you?"

Awesome line.

I think being an adult and calling yourself a "girl" sounds about as reasonable as being an adult and calling yourself a "boy". I think it's silly either way.

This looks soooo bad. I guess this will prove if there is enough female comic fans to keep this show going. It looks like they are trying way to hard to make this show appealing to 12 year old girls while also alienating any fanboys who would have enjoyed a show about Supergirl. Plus making Jimmy Olsen a tall, good looking black guy for a love interest is absolutely ridiculous.

I doubt the number of female comic fans will have much of anything to do with whether the show works or succeeds. The idea that female heroes only appeal to females really ought to have been debunked by the extreme success of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Xena: Warrior Princess (the latter of which was actually a spin-off of a show featuring male hero Hercules which was never even remotely as successful.)

It turns out that male fans of heroes only like one thing more than heroes kicking ass, and that's heroes kicking ass who have boobs.

Yeah, that line was pretty funny. Ally McBeal seems to make a pretty good Devil Wears Prada.

I just hope there will be a few more dimensions to the Kara character than the standard normal girl stuff.

Having said that what I said two posts ago and should have edited to include this comment, I have no interest in this show. But that's because I'm not really interested in "superheroes" anymore, and wouldn't watch a "Superman" TV show, either.

CBS is trying to lower the age of their typical demographic by about fifty years.

It's not going to work.

In comics, Kara hated the humans when she first came to Earth.

Maybe because even kryptonian women have their periods.

Seems to be a contrast to the too gritty Superman movies but going a bit too far into soap opera territory, plus the trailer could have gone without the teen pop or w/e; an orchestral score would have been MUCH more appropriate.

Also that is NOT Jimmy Olsen. GTFO with that noise.
