There are some experiences I like more than finishing the game.
I do like exploring, and catching what I missed in my completed playthrough. Also the compulsion to try out various specializations and classes proved to be overly tempting.
Is it bad that I have about 8 characters, none with the story completed?

It isn't so strange that you should have 8 characters and no completed games. It's probably much stranger that I should have >20 characters and 9 finished games.
