I'm deciding wether to go Champion or Reaver for my human warrior. I like the idea of champion but love to dps. Now this has me thinking are reavers evil, addicts, destined to die, all of those, or none of those. Would love to hear people weigh in on this.
On the matter of Reavers

Drinking dragons blood is supposed to make you more aggressive and have an increased desire to kill, but that's about it. Not true evil, but definitely going to have a mean streak according to canon. The reaver trainer being nice doesn't contradict that. I imagine it really only effects how you act with people you would probably want to see dead anyway even without being a reaver.

Could be that the hyper-aggression and homicidal tendencies only begin to manifest if you drink it constantly, which is why very few people ever survive contact with Dragon Cultists, who tend to be Reavers?
That is, unless they retcon it so that Reavers need to keep drinking it to maintain their abilities, like they did with the Templars and Lyrium?

That's an interesting way to look at it. In my mind Reavers might only become hyper aggressive, depending on person of course, when wounded, smelling alot of blood, and dealing with a hated foe. Plus the people that normally would voluntarily go through this may already be more aggressive than your average person.

Far as we know, one good drinking permanently changes you on a core level into a a quasi mage. No constant drinking needed. I don't know if cultists constantly drink it and that's why they go nuts. I honestly don't think it actually makes you evil, just a bit of an @sshole. Honestly, how aggressive Hawke acts in DA2 is a good approximation of what I think reavers act like. You can play as a very upstanding and moral Hawke that still has an aggressive personality (I've done so), so it's nothing about morality.
You know, aggressive Hawke really is perfect for a Hawke that is both a reaver and a berserker. It's the exact personality I would expect from someone who is both.

Like aggressive Hawke. Becoming a reaver didn't affect him much because he was already pretty reaver-like in personality to begin with.

About a tenth of a percent of the population had the opposite reaction to the Pax. Their aggressor response increased... beyond madness. They have become, well... they've killed most of us. And not just killed, they've... done things. I won't live to report this.

"Target the Reavers... target the Reavers... target everyone... somebody fire! "
Anyone else want to see a future protagonist screw over a powerful and over-confident enemy, by bringing a whole contingent of Reavers down onto their heads? Would be fun to do an optional sidequest that allows us to pull that out of our bag of tricks at a crucial moment and help us turn the tide of a difficult battle, kinda like how we're able to talk Calpernia down or nerf Samson's armour?

Are you cool with eating human (and elf, dwarf, qunari) flesh?

I think they went back to "taking the life force" out of foes rather than eating them.

Not as of Inquisition, no. Devour is still "take a bite" as opposed to "inhale ghost-farts".

Hehehe!
Well, Firefly/Serenity Reavers are basically darkspawn. It'd be kind of awesome to sic the horde upon your enemies (if it didn't, ya know, 'cause a Blight and all that)... let's see, what's the parallel here? Tevinter magisters became the first darkspawn, so I guess we fight Tevinter with hurlocks.

In Inquisition, to me, it looks like "use the Devil Bringer to rip out of part of their soul."
As for the OP's question of Reavers, this may help:
Codex Entry: Way of the Reaver
From "A Path of Warning and Harsh Promises." Breaker Tham's words make one passage stand out:
The blood of the dragon is treated in a way that speaks of dark intent, though motive is left to the temperament of the individual reaver. All of us can be tempted to harsh conduct. It is simply the fate of the reaver that theirs is the power to be brutal above most others. Their destruction is first inward, a commitment and test that spares them the instant distrust of the blood mage - to whom temptation comes with ease and the will of a demon in constant threat.
It's up to you weather to be an evil blood addict or not. The abilities of the Reaver are a tool, nothing more.
I personally, prefer the Champion spec. Pump up strength and attack through accessories, amulets, gear, etc and use the ability "To the Death" which increases the damage dealt to the affected enemy over time. They die quickly and with the upgrade to "To the Death" you increase your guard for the next guy.

That's what happens when a show is fourteen episodes long.

Cassandra's comments on the Reaver specialization:
Her comments suggest that you can get away with drinking a little dragon blood to get power, but continually drinking dragon's blood causes physical mutations and drives you insane.
