First off, sorry if this is in the wrong spot. There doesn't seem to be a general section for multiplayer, and items/lfg seem like totally inappropriate forums for this.

TLDR - Anybody else have weird problems with the push-to-talk voice chat keybind not working or with their mic getting stuck open (ignoring push-to-talk option)?

I recently started playing DAMP and I'm having weird mic issues on my PC. I use push-to-talk for in game voice chat, and sometimes it works fine. Other times the push-to-talk key doesn't seem to work at all, and other times the mic is left open like I'm holding down the push-to-talk key when I'm not. Basically it just seem like the in game push-to-talk feature is buggy as hell. I've tried changing my voice chat keybind in case I just have a stuck key, but that doesn't seem to be the issue.

I didn't even know it was happening to me until I was talking to my son the other day without the push-to-talk held down, and someone made a comment regarding it. Since then I've been randomly pulling up my party list in-game to see if my mic is active or not (by watching the mic symbol while speaking), and was surprised to see that often my mic is just open constantly for people to hear what I'm doing. I often run into other people who seem to have the same problem and are unaware that their mic is open, or maybe they just don't care.

On the reverse side, sometimes the keybind doesn't work at all. Then I'm stuck playing a match unable to communicate with my group. This is a problem I didn't really notice until I started monitoring my mic during a game. I just thought people were ignoring me, and they could have been, but now I'm seeing that every few games my push-to-talk key does nothing at all.

I really like the multiplayer, and I like communicating with my group, but I don't want people randomly hearing my conversations with my family, or me snacking on something. Because that's nasty. Is there a reason why this is happening?

Yes, that is the unfortunate state of the Push to Talk functionality on PC currently...

Bioware tried to fix it back in Patch 1.03 or so, but unfortunately it's not working the way we expect it to.

Thank you for the response. I guess I'll just deal with it like everyone else, but I'm glad I'm not the only one with the issue.

It's very annoying, because it leads to people turning off the VoIP function ingame, so it has the opposite effect of what was intended.

I agree. I've made a few friends despite the mic issues so far, but it seems like communication is necessary especially for newer players like me. Luckily I read the forums and reddit a lot so I have a basic understanding of things, but there are a lot of things I've learned in game from people over voice chat. I've already ran into quite a few people who didn't know you could press V (on PC) to bring up a party frame to mute players and vote kick AFKers.

Anyway, I know I've probably been muted a few times and I've muted a few guys too just because I can hear them eating, heavy breathing, or doing other things while playing. They probably have no clue that their mic is open. It's really a shame.

Does your headset/mic have a mute button on it?  I've resorted to using that because the PTT is so unreliable, flipping it on and off when I need to say something.  It's really frustrating because I've enjoyed using my mic in groups before but after several awkward incidents (one was similar to your kid conversation being broadcast, talking about Batman) I just don't feel comfortable even having it enabled most of the time.

Luckily this fun group that I get to play with sometimes uses RaidCall so I don't have to worry they'll hear me mumbling and swearing when I mess up.

I actually found this small program called MicMute and it lets you mute your mic with a keybind from in game. I haven't tested it out yet, but it could be good since I don't have a mute button/switch on my mic.

If I catch myself doing that, I usually just throw out an apology. "I don't even know if my mic is on right now, but if it is...sorry!" I'm stuck using my dashboard mic--which I feel terrible about because I know it probably sounds like I have bad cell reception in a wind tunnel--but I can't find the settings that will filter the mic inputs and volume outputs without just having it all go through the headset which doesn't work for me being able to hear what's going on particularly well. Probably have to poke around system settings, instead of DAI settings.

So, I tested MicMute out a bit. You can set it up into "transmitter mode" which is essentially push-to-talk, and assign it to your input device (mic). I then set my DAI voice chat option to voice activated, and in combination with MicMute's transmitter mode it works perfectly. Of course using a third party application is kind of annoying, but this basically bypasses the whole buggy push-to-talk key problem since you're basically always in voice activated mode as far as Dragon Age itself is concerned, but it can only pick up the mic when MicMute "unmutes" the mic in transmitter mode.

Not really the most elegant solution, but just throwing out the information in case it is useful to anyone else.
